Visitors to Buckfield enter into a land that appears much the same as when inhabited by Creek Indians. The

Indians came for the mild climate, abundant food and water. The white man came to farm, raise cattle and

harvest timber. Buckfield has always provided. Today, it is one of the finest hunting properties in the South

Carolina low country and contains almost twenty million dollars in standing timber. Revenue from these

resources is relatively steady and the plantation is self-sufficient. The property will appeal to investors wanting

beautiful rural property located in the fastest growing area of the Southeast.

The original house at Buckfield was substantially improved by Claude W. Kress of Kress’s Five and Dime store

chain who began assembling the property in the early 1900’s. He later built two houses near the main house

for his daughters; one is pictured below and known as the Huger House. The houses are used by members of

the plantation’s hunting club.

Improvements include equipment sheds, workman’s houses, kennels, pastures, duck impoundments, quail

and deer patches and a high fenced dove field. A building called the field house is used as a meeting place for

hunters and for storing guns, ammunition, waders, decoys and supplies.
