BHEL's Tiruchi unit hit by strike

Production at the Tiruchirapalli (Tiruchi) unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd

(BHEL) was hit on Monday due to a strike called by workers who are

demanding a pay revision.

Though there was an earlier threat of all units in South India the others are atChennai and Ranipet in Tamil Nadu, besides Hyderabad and Bangalore

going on strike from today, only the Tiruchi unit has been affected. The earlier

threat was given by R Ethiraj, general secretary of the Labour Progressive

Front, affiliated to the ruling party here, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Around 25,000 workers are employed in the five South Indian units.

According to a senior official from the Tiruchi unit, which produces boilers,

only 1,100 of the 6,000 workers reported for the first shift.

Executives and non-executives are eligible for wage revision with effect from

January 1, 2007. The last revision was done in 1997. The trade unions are

insisting on a five-year tenure of wage agreement, instead of 10 years, with full

fitment benefit, said another official from the Ranipet unit.

The workers also want that the rate of increment should be a percentage of the

basic salary, along with proportionate rise in fringe benefits.

But negotiations are dragging, partly because the two sides have not been able

to agree on a rise in basic pay. They have also been unable to agree on the

duration of a wage settlement or the tenure during which the agreed structure

should exist. The management had called for talks on September 18, he added.

BHEL Tiruchi unit employees go on strike over wage issue

Employees of state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals' facility here on Monday went

on one-day strike protesting "delay" in wage revision due since 2007 Company

sources said only 1,100 workers and employees reported for work for the 8 amto 4.30 pm first / general shift against the normal attendance of 6,000 plus.

Union sources said employees affiliated to all trade unions participated in the

strike to protest the "prolonged delay" in announcement of the wage revision

pending since January 2007.

A massive protest was held by employees of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited

(BHEL), Ranipur, seeking fulfilment of their demands. Employees of both

major plants HEEP Heavy Electricals Engineering Limited and CFFP ForgeryPlant staged a dharna.

Under the aegis of the BHEL Workers Union, agitating employees demanded

wage revision and instant solution of their five-point demands letter. Their main

demand is a uniform wage revision. Union members alleged that for the past

three years despite reminders and protests no heed had been paid towards the

wage revision.

Lending support, Hindu Majdoor Sabha joined hands with the BHEL Shramik

Union, BHEL Karyalaya Majdoor Sangh, Central Foundry Forge Karmachari

Union and other affiliated unions of BHEL in the protest.

Joint secretary of the union Umesh Kumar said, Wage relativity should be

maintained as per on January 1, 1992. We demand that the wage of contractual

workers also be fixed by a joint union, change in promotional policy with

lessening by 1 or 2 years in all grades and maintenance of at par agreement

between both sides, said Umesh.

The joint union has warned that it will go on strike on November 25 if their

demands are not resolved in the meeting of the management to be held

tomorrow.
