Building Update is extremely proud to present Bulmer Brick and Tile Company

with its richly deserved Building Excellence Profile.

Renowned experts in the field of brick making, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company are a small, family run business specialising in the restoration and rejuvenation of buildings throughout the UK, both large and small.

Owned and ran by brick making expert Peter Minter, the company’s story began back in 1936 when the Bulmer family bought a small brickyard near the Essex/Suffolk border. Peter’s father, a builder by trade, was extremely experienced in manufacturing specialist bricks to restore buildings during the

war and passed his legacy down to his family. Peter took over the company in 1974, making bespoke bricks to suit specific requirements.

Today, Bulmer Brick and Tile continues to create bricks from the finest London Clays. They are all handmade using traditional methods of making, drying and are fired in a coal burning, down draught kiln, providing a distinctive finish that blends seamlessly with the original work.

“Having learned a great deal from my father all that time ago, I am highly experienced in the traditional methods of making bricks,” commented Peter. “These methods are combined with modern techniques to provide a truly spectacular result, one that creates bricks to fit in perfectly with the original brick work.

“All our workers are highly skilled in more than one technique and dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service. Each and every project from large to small, from full restoration or extensions to one off bricks, is treated with the

same care and attention, as we strive to meet the customers’ exact requirements.”

Producing approximately, 300,000 bricks per year, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company has the knowledge and ability to create a whole host of bricks from almost any century. Their wide range of facings and specials can be made with almost any texture, from coarse veined to smooth with some 150 different sizes of facing and a range of over 5,000 special shapes, including all standard plinths, squints and copings, and extends to purpose made chimney bricks, terracotta, mullions, jambs, floor bricks, pamments, decorative plaques, garden edgings and a full range of rubbing blocks.

Their renowned expertise have been showcased

in many large projects for the National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces, as well as small private work undertaken by individuals.

“At Bulmer Brick and Tile Company, we put the building first and strive to provide a seamless repair or stunning restoration,” Peter continued. “We discuss everything with the client prior to any work being started and provide professional advice and guidance throughout the process. We never take cheap short cuts and ensure we work within specific budgets at competitive prices, offering great value for money.”

Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries.

Measuring and Estimating Made SimpleOfficially established in 2010, QuickScale is an

award winning programme designed for taking areas and measurements off pdf drawings. Simple, user friendly and competitively priced, the system was created for those who work from home with limited PC knowledge or with no access to IT departments.

It was originally invented for the needs of the building and construction industry, but, over the years has become extremely popular with ship building and marine insurance, event planning, CCTV and communications – any business that would calculate areas and measurements from a pdf drawing or photograph.

“Our software is simpler and cheaper than the competition,” commented QuickScale’s Leanne Mitchell. “The programme is purchased as a one off payment with no annual renewals or costs and we don’t charge for support.

“Once a customer has purchased the system, they will be able to use it indefinitely and we are always on hand to provide expert help and support as long as needed, at no extra cost. We kept the system simple and have not increased our prices since we began trading, which is

why we now have many large international companies using QuickScale on a daily basis.”

In previous years, drawings were posted out to the subcontractor and measured with a scale rule. Today, drawings are emailed as a pdf and are not always to scale or don’t have any scale at all. They have to be sent to a printer or 3rd party to have them printed to scale and this happens every time the drawings are revised or amended.

With QuickScale, the user needs one known measurement, like a door width or parking space. They click on the

beginning and end of that known measurement, type in the distance and QuickScale will scale the pdf for that particular paper size. From then on, you click on the points and corners of the areas and measurements and the program will give you all the dimensions. QuickScale is also integrated into other types of estimating packages. It is used for the basic take off and the dimensions are exported directly into other estimating software.

Based in Harold Wood in Essex, the company currently provide QuickScale to contractors, subcontractors, quantity surveyors and architects in over 19 countries.

The majority of business is gained from repeat purchases, word of mouth referrals, existing customers expanding or their staff members leaving and moving to a new company or starting up on their own.

“We focus on our customer support and take this very seriously,” Leanne continued. “We don’t have call centres for support and think people shouldn’t have to log a call and wait for a response. A mobile number is on the website and is answered by someone who can help immediately.

“Customers are often amazed at how quickly they understand and can use QuickScale. We’re often told by new free trial users that they think they need to set aside a couple of hours where they can sit quietly and focus on the software but are pleasantly surprised to discover they can start their take off almost immediately.” For more information on QuickScale and how it can benefit you, contact the company on: +44 (0)7791 550167, email: [email protected] or visit the website at: www.quickscale.co

The Leader in Timber Engineered Solutions

Building Update is incredibly proud to feature Yorkshire Timber Engineering,

presenting the business as its highly prestigious Timber Frame Construction Company of Choice.

Widely classed as a specialist of the build world, Yorkshire Timber Engineering is a fully focused organisation specialising in the supply of precision engineered timber solutions. Almost a decade of industry experience has enabled the brand to become a leading provider of first rate roof trusses, engineered floor joists and, of course, timber frames.

The forward-thinking and progressive company originated in 2008 and was set up by three co-founders; D. Prescott, S. Prescott, M. Bean and D. Grantley. Ever since its beginnings the business has experienced steady growth, and has, over the course of its existence thus far, constructed more than a staggering 2,000 houses.

This success comes courtesy of Yorkshire Timber Engineering’s innovative and effective building methods. Customers appreciate the timely and professional techniques incorporated; utilising high quality wood, timber and engineering in their processes means constructing the internal shell of a property is much faster than is possible with other procedures. This ensures that homes, single story houses

and multi-story apartment blocks can be erected in half of the time it would take with traditional brick and block practices.

The group can conduct full site surveys (site measures included if necessary) and the popularised Timber Frame System can be erected in practically all weather conditions to set time scales and pre-established budgets. The internal wall panels, joists and roof solutions, meanwhile, have been appreciated for their ability to deliver excellent thermal and sound proofing performance.

A particular product of note is the Eco-Joist Metal Web Joist Solution, which reduces the requirement for load bearing intermediate walls and creates easy passage of service ducting, wiring and plumbing. The time and money saving innovation uses smaller timber sections and metal webs to eliminate the problem of squeaky floor space and to enhance dimensional stability, whilst the Eco-Joist floor beams come in six sizes with trussed rafters for economical roofing applications.

Regardless of the solution you choose, you will be sure to find the perfect product with Yorkshire Timber Engineering. The team combine design creativity and strategic layouts with sophisticated scheduling software to ensure all of the relevant information, materials schedules and engineering calculations are collated. Consult a company representative today to find out more about the opportunities available to you with this highly commended brand.

PPE & Workwear News

Light up in Spring with the GlowBeanieAvailable in a multitude of fun and quirky colours,

patterns, shapes and sizes, the GlowBeanie is a glow in the dark beanie hat which gets the wearer seen. Ideal for the upcoming spring, summer festivals and more, the beanies are all handmade using a high quality and super chunky wool that features a special reflective thread running throughout, which allows it to glow in the dark.

The beanie is extremely useful in variety of situations, including when heading out in the evening for a walk, jog, cycle, walking the dog, nipping to the shops, going on the school run and many more. Plus, the stylish number works as wholly unique and fun fashion statement that’s perfect for any age. It has also found a special use for those working on construction sites as they can be worn under hard hats keeping the wearer safe and seen on busy and dark sites.

“Every product is custom made to the customer’s

requirements, based on my unique designs and extensive colour range,” commented Founder, Jane Beachell. “Our USP, the glowing fabric, is essentially a special thread which bounces back light and makes the wearer more visible and, subsequently, safer.

“The aim is to promote an efficient service and an excellent customer experience that will build repeat custom. We even provide team specials (sets of 10 identical glow beanies at a discounted price) which enable customers to save 10%.”

There is a variety of different styles to choose from including the Moss, the Stripe, the PomPom, the Shorty, the Cable, the Cable Trim and the Slouchy, with all of them capable of having a pompom added for extra flair if required.

The Moss is one of the most favoured, available in all colours and in two sizes for adult or children. The

GlowBeanie Cable Trim is a multi-coloured beanie styled in cable stitch and available in all colours and the Slouchy is a hot favourite amongst young people and style enthusiasts as it features extra depth for a slouchy effect and comes in multiple designs.

Recently added are the ‘Ultra’ – which is ultra-warm being made of double the wool – and the Beret – great as a year round accessory, especially when made with cotton.

Due to the success of the beanies, GlowBeanie was able to expand its services and now offers a range of glow in the dark products, such as wraparound or skinny scarves, headbands, wristbands and neckgaiters. Bright and glowing and available in an abundance of colours and styles, the glow in the dark accessories are perfect to keep you safe whilst enjoying the fun and festivities this spring and summer.
