BTSR is striding into adulthood with confidence and excitement. While we cherish the joyful memory of childhood and the self-discovery of adolescence, BTSR is demonstrating its maturity in a number of significant ways.

You hold in your hand BTSR’s first Annual Report. In our history, we have provided information about BTSR in a variety of ways. Now, we are doing what adult organizations do, by providing an all-encompassing Annual Report. I encourage you to put this on a book shelf. You may want to compare the one next year (2017) to the one we are providing now (2016). Adult organizations are into mapping yearly successes and growth.

As you may know, I announced my retirement in March, effective June 30, 2017. The transition in the President’s Office at BTSR is also a clear example of how adult organizations work. I didn’t just announce one day, “I’m done!” No less than four trustee level committees were created to negotiate, plan and

implement a smooth and healthy transition in the President’s Office. The official date of my retirement was a collaborative decision partly based on the best timing for the school. Most of my work these days is focused on making preparations for the new president’s arrival. Adult organizations do transitions well.

Adult organizations make a healthy way forward regardless of the environmental context. Young organizations spend a lot of time reacting and adjusting to circumstances beyond their control. Adult organizations map out a future and work to turn dreams into reality. I am not suggesting the future will be easy or simple.

I am not suggesting BTSR will ever lose her rambunctious, edgy spirit. I am simply saying, we are twenty-five and moving forward with confidence.

As we journey onward into a new chapter for the seminary and the church, BTSR alumni and friends remind me of the importance of keeping “first things first.” It is with a renewed spirit of hope and collaboration that we are delighted to share this BTSR Annual Report with you in celebration of a new season of “firsts.”

Looking back, the BTSR Annual Report reflects the generosity of individuals, churches, denominational and ministry partners who have offered their first fruits to support our work together. Thank you for your support, and for your investment in the seminary!

Looking forward, BTSR celebrates the steady leadership of Dr. Ron Crawford as he concludes his tenure as President in July 2017. Please pray for BTSR as we prepare to welcome a new President who will be surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, empowered to continue the good work.
