Fitness, Health and Performance: IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS, WRITE

THEM DOWN!

Fitness is “the ability to meet the demands of the environment”

Health is “a state of complete mental, physical, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.”

Performance is “how well a task is completed.”

Components of fitness-

PASS- What is the component of fitness? MERIT- Give examples of sports that use the

component of fitness. DISTINCTION- How can the component of

fitness improve performance? Explain how they will allow an athlete to achieve excellence.

“The ability to moves quickly and precisely or change direction without losing balance or time”

Training has little or no effect on agility.

Agility

Agility is especially important in sports that require

a sharp movement or turn. i.e. goal keeper

“is the ability of the performer to retain their centre of gravity/mass over their base of support”

Two types:

Static – little or no movement is produced, for example a handstand.

Dynamic – movement is produced during a balance, for example, keeping your balance on a board i.e. skateboard, surfing

Balance cannot really be trained, but can be improved through practise.

Balance

“The ability to use 2 or more parts of your body smoothly and accurately at the same time.”

E.G. simple acts such as walking require co-ordination, but a higher level of concentration is required when performing an effective tennis stroke (footwork and arm action)

Cannot be improved in training, but performing specific actions can improve them through practise.

“The time between the presentation of a stimulus and movement (response)”

A stimulus could be anything from a starting gun In the 100m sprint, to a sudden side-step by an opponent.

Reaction time can be improved in training, however this can also be more about anticipating the stimulus.

For example, how quickly a table tennis player reacts to a serve.

“is the work done in a unit of time”

power = force (kg) × speed (time min/secs)

Power is important in explosive events like throwing and sprinting.

Boxers need power to be able to punch hard and fast. Power is vital to getting a good start in short races.

“ability of the cardio-respiratory system to supply with nutrients and oxygen to the working muscles during sustained exercise.”

It is sometime called –Cardio-respiratory fitness.

Aerobic Endurance

Cardiovascular- Transports oxygen and nutrients to tissues in the body. It is made up of the heart, blood and blood vessels.

Respiratory- Brings oxygen into the body. It is made up of the lungs and airways.

Marathon runners need a high

level of aerobic endurance.

“the maximum force muscle can produce”.

Measured in kilograms (kg) or Newtons (N)

Muscular Strength

Can you think of any other examples?

Explosive strength- One quick contraction (javelin)

Dynamic strength- Can be repeated (sit ups)

Can be improved through weight training.

“Time taken to cover a set distance (m/sec)”

3 types of speed:

1. Accelerative: sprints up to 30m.

2. Pure: sprints up to 60m.

3. Endurance: sprints with short recovery in-between

You are said to be ‘born with speed’, but it can be improved through sprint training.

Professional footballers need a high level of muscular endurance to keep them moving around the pitch for 90 minutes.

Essential for long distance events.

Can be improved by taking part in long duration weight training activities.

Muscular Endurance“The ability to repeatedly contact your voluntary muscles over a long time without getting tired”

Can you think of any other examples?

The ability of the muscles to stretch and then return to their original position fluidly.

It is important for reducing the risk of muscles strains and injuries.

Gymnasts need to be flexibility to perform actions such as the splits.

It can be improved by stretching on a regular basis.

Flexibility “The range of movement possible at a joint”

Body Composition“The percentage of your body weight made up of fat, muscle, vital organs and bone.”

Ratio of fat mass : fat-free mass.Fat – free mass is made up of vital organs, muscle & bones in the body.Three somatotypes:

ENDOMORPH MESOMORPH ECTOMORPH
