Well they did it again.

The Golden Memories car show at the Sloan had absolutely perfect weatherwith lots of great classic cars on display. Of The 151 registered half were prewar. There were lots of great cars to lust over and a very large number of BuickTownmembers to talk to and argue with about the attributes of the various models.

An event that I was not aware of was the book signing by Margery Krevskywho wrote “Sirens of Chrome” which is about a visual ride through auto show his-tory. Margery co-founded the Productions Plus agency in Bingham Farms in 1981which has supplied many of the models thatappear with the cars at the various shows.

For future reference the third Sundayin September seems to be the ideal day forgood weather to hold an event.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Bits and PiecesA comment or reminder is appropriate regarding our elections. You are aware the search for new candi-dates resulted in only one person vying for each office. Therefore voting by ballot is not necessary. Yourfinal vote will be by “acclamation”, that is, a voice vote, at the November meeting, which will formally an-nounce next years’ officers.

The Board finalized a lingering issue regarding the club trailer at the October BOD meeting. This trailer, simply said, is beset with complications due to club ownership. The board affirms storage for club propertyis necessary in one form or another. Because the trailer is owned by an “entity”, i.e. Buicktown, mostMichigan insurers (underwriters) deem it to be a commercial trailer and require a commercial tow vehicle.A private vehicle, yours or mine, does not have the proper coverage! Many options were discussed, evalu-ated and the board rendered a final disposition. The membership will first be informed about the situationat the October RMM. The printing schedule for the next Crier requires that my writing be submitted to theeditor prior to that membership meeting.

Went to Hell, eh? I will be very careful to whom I am speaking when describing our Fall tour. I don’t want amisunderstanding by saying the club went to “Hell” on my watch. But, we did and all 46 members whomade the journey had a good time. All returned safely, perhaps reflecting a little because of the uniquedestination. A big thank-you to Marshall and Diane Callard and Jim and Jackie Beal for their leadershipand making it happen. Another Buicktown tour done well!

Our two newly sponsored interns from Mott Community College and UM Flint are selected and now workingat the Buick Gallery. Most members have toured the restoration shop and are knowledgeable about theongoing Skylark restoration project and how the MCC intern program works. Jane McIntosh, Associate Cu-rator, is finalizing her plan for the archival tasks dedicated to the Buick documents at the Gallery. This in-formation will be brought to the November meeting. Both students are invited to attend our meeting at Fen-ton Farms.

New news is about the Genesee Area Skills Center on Torrey Road in Flint. Please read Bob Gardner’sarticle in the next issue. High school students wanting specific skill related classes enroll in this facilitywhen their district does not offer the courses. GASC is operated by Flint Community Schools and servesstudents from all districts in Genesee County. This automotive training is a good prerequisite to the auto-motive repair and restoration classes at MCC.

As I write, the biggest job for the club is days away. Next Friday night is the setup for the swap meet. Wewill arrive early and work the long hours for Saturday and Sunday. Remember, this swap meet is the mainsource of funding for club activities spread throughout the year. Benefits members currently enjoy are notpossible from dues alone. Charlie and Jim have worked hard and plainly put out the word for more playersto divvy the assignments at Patsy Lou’s. The extent of our success will be known by the time you read this. The 2010 operating budget will also be a good indicator.

Can this really be the December issue of the Crier! A “Holiday” issue will follow and, 2009 will be “In thebooks”.

Regards, Roger

Building America’s Canals & Perilous Journeys and the Michigan PioneerOn October 17 two new traveling exhibits opened at the Sloan Museum. The America’s Canals is a great show

on how canals were built and how they went over around and through various geographical features using bridges, locks and aqueducts to provide canals that allowed commerce and travelers to be transported through the region.

Perilous Journeys depicts how travelers endured danger and hardship while trying to migrate west. I had neverrealized how dangerous thepaddle and steam boats werebut I can attest to trying to navi-gate through Michigan mud.

These exhibits, beingtraveling shows, will only be atthe Sloan until January 10, 2010so be sure to load up the familyand spend a few hours enjoyingthese exhibits.

NOTES FROM THEASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Our December Christmas party and Awards night is as nice anevent as in the past, but is very affordable so that more will be able to joinin the fun. It’s been many years since our chapter members have beentreated to a sit down served dinner and at prices that really test the mem-ory.

I hope to see as many of you as possible at this “special“ meetingto honor the volunteers that made the 2009 year so enjoyable for all ourmembership. The location is the former “Plush Hobo” and later J J Shak-ers newly reopened by the original owner Betty Fawcett with a new name“the Hobo’s Back”. Many may remember the good old days if they vis-ited there in the 70’s and 80’s.

Cover Story1953 Buick Skylark “Clone”

And Much Much MoreRon & Margie Wallace

Ron Wallace was raised in the north end of Flint (Beecher HighSchool Graduate) and like so many of the Flint natives developed an in-terest in cars at an early age. Ron’s first car was a 1946 Plymouth andhis first Buick was a 1953 Super which laid the groundwork for the pro-ject that Ron took on later.

The current cars in the Wallace stable are a 1951 Chevy with a350 CID Chevrolet V8, with a 4 speed Muncie transmission which is a

modified cruiser, a 1954 Chevrolet (a work inprogress) that has air ride, a 500 CID CadillacV8 and will become a “resto rod” upon com-pletion. There is also a low mileage 1973Cadillac Eldorado and last but not least, Ronand Margie’s favorite, a 1953 Buick SkylarkClone, made from a 1953 Super.

When Ron owned his first 1953 Superhe kept thinking that it would not be too diffi-

cult to convert the Super to a Skylark. The fenders were bolt ons and many of the parts were interchangeable. Fast for-ward many years and with the help of BuickTown member and neighbor Chuck Anderson, a 1950s cruiser whichturned out to be a 1953 Super was located in Cleveland with its original 322 CID nail head V8 and fenders and quarterpanels turned up in South Carolina from a guy who was parting out a 1953 Skylark. After a year of continuous work

on the Clone, using pictures of a Skylark as a pattern, the“Clone” rolled out of the garage with a bright red paint joband a white cloth top. Ron and Margie are justifiablyproud of their1953 Buick andthey have accu-mulated over 50trophies/plaquesthat they havewon from vari-ous car showsthat they haveattended.

Margie is the school teacher, choir director person while Ron is themechanically inclined guy who can fixanything and has a solid automotivebackground from his early upbringing, experiences as shop foreman at VernParsell’s Buick Dealership and being abig rig owner operator.

Ron and Margie have a daughter, two granddaughters and four stepgrandchildren that keep them busy between car shows.

Ron and Margie organized and hostedthe 2003 BuickTown fall cruise which stoppedat Curwood Castle, Stoddard’s on M-52 andUncle John’s Cider Mill. The Wallace’s joinedBuickTown in 2002 and if they could makeone suggestion to improve the chapter it wouldbe that we could work on our imitative to meet, greet and get to know new members.

If you don’t receive an e-mail copy of the Crier before it gets sent via the U. S. PostOffice, maybe you haven’t given a good e-mail address to Jim MacLean, Member-ship Chairman, or maybe it’s blocked by your anti-virus anti-spam firewall, or maybeyour ISP limits the size of attachments you are allowed to get. Currently about adozen are returned as undeliverable, so if you’ve changed your address please letJim know.

If you don’t receive your Crier through the U. S, Post Office in a timely manner theFlint Processing Center will investigate the delay. In order to do this I need to sub-mit a request with the zip code and the date it is delivered or if it is not delivered. Itis advisable to first talk to your carrier and then your local Post Office. One of our members did this and was told “don’t be sur-prised if the problem goes away” and guess what? It did. And if you want your copy before it goes to the Post Office and youwant an excuse to visit the Buick Gallery ask Bob Gardner to add you to the list of volunteers that prepare the Crier for mailing. Itonly takes about an hour and we get to meet some nice visitors at the Gallery.

Have fun driving safe

Bill StolpinLocated in Holly Michigan, (about twenty minutes south ofFlint Michigan), Bill comes from a talented family. Hisfather was an engineer and sculptor while his mother was astockbroker, a pianist and composer, and his brother is aretired journeyman model maker and an inventor with sev-eral patents in his name. An eagle scout and a retired engi-neer himself, Bill used to play the flute, has done every-thing in Community Theater including directing, and hasstudied lithography (with Emil Weddige), woodcut (withAkira Kurosaki) and etching (at Crown Point Press). Hecurrently teaches printmaking at the Flint Institute of Artsin Flint.

Bill Stolpin has beenmaking prints sincehe was a kid. In jun-ior high school, hewas making linoleumblock Christmascards. The year hemade a card with 7blocks, and fifteencolors, he decided totake advantage of hisprintmaking skills.

In addition to his own prints, Bill began printing with thelate James Anthony in 1980. Quickly joined by StefanDavidek and Carole Brender, the four printmakers soonbecame known as DAS PRINT Co. As a well known groupin the Flint area, they have printed together ever since. They have had group shows throughout mid-Michigan, andrecently had a twenty-five year retrospective show at AlmaCollege in Alma Michigan.

Many of Bill’s prints are available through the Art Rentalprogram at the Flint Insti-tute of Arts (810-234-1695) ups at the FlintArt Fair every June.

Thanks for visiting The Hot Dog Stand! Home of the “Original” Red Sauce

What is the history of the “Original Red Sauce”?My grandparent’s Ellsworth and Aileen Moore were involved in the A&W business when they came to Flint in 1935 andopened the city’s first A&W. My Grandfather had never cared for the taste of ketchup, so my Grandmother came up with ahomemade ketchup recipe better suited to his taste. It has been used ever since in our restaurants. My Grandfather and Fatherin 1964 built the Hot Dog Stand in Grand Blanc that my family currently operates. Our family also had the A&W in down-town Flint, on Beech Street, that was in our family for over 50 years. The A&W name may be gone, but our restaurant stilluses the original recipe that has been in our family businesses for the last 70 years. The “Original Red Sauce” is only avail-able at the Hot Dog Stand in Grand Blanc. - Rhonda Moore

BACK TO THE BRICKSWe held our appreciation banquet for our sponsors in late Septem-ber which was sponsored by J.D. Winegarden, Jr. P.C. Attorney atLaw. The turn-out of sponsors was a little light but a good time washad by all. Appreciation awards were sponsored by A FrameAwards. Ben Roof and his group did a great job on the awards. For the first time, we awarded the ‘Back to the Bricks SpiritAwards’ to the following sponsors: Duke’s Car Stereo, ELGACredit Union, Young Environmental, ABC12 and A FrameAwards. The logical question is ‘what is the Spirit Award’. TheSpirit Award is not based upon the size of the monetary support orhow large the in kind support is. It is entirely based upon sponsorswho have gone beyond what they initially contributed. It is acts of‘random generosity’ that was not solicited or requested. Thesesponsors contributed dash plaques, paid for the pancake breakfast

on Friday morning, passed out free water and popcorn on the‘Rolling Cruise’ nights, provided trash dumpsters, promo videos andeven showed up on Sunday morning to help pick up trash that wasleft in the show area in downtown Flint (by the way, there was not alot!). So now you know the rest of the story about the ‘Back to theBricks Spirit Award’. Stop in and see them and tell them you appre-ciate their support of the ‘Back to the Bricks’.

That’s it for this month. Look for some exciting news in the nextfew months. The 2010 event should prove to be a real ‘barn burner’.

Cordially,

Al Hatch, Chairman, Back to the Bricks Cruise and Car Show

BUICKTOWN AND MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUILD THE FUTUREWith the new academic year, our apprentice program is off to a great start. We have a new student who was se-lected from a number of applicants for the Buicktown apprenticeship. Bret Lovett will be introduced to the club at alater meeting. There is so much interest in this internship that some of the past recipients wanted to be consideredagain. Those of you who were at the September meeting at the Buick Gallery had the opportunity to hear Dr. ClarkHarris, Dean of Technology at Mott College, and Greg Keller, Supervisor, Buick Gallery give first hand accounts ofhow the program is viewed from their perspectives. For those unable to attend a copy of the presentation Dr. Harrisgave is inserted in this Crier.

Spare PartsTalk about long lead times. The October 2009

Issue of the Buick Bugle (The 2009 National Meet Edi-tion) announced on page #41 that Jim Johnson of Cliohas received the “Buick Heritage Award” for all thegreat work Jim did while he worked at the Sloan Mu-seum. I hope that this in no way diminishes the workthat Jim did but why does it take so long to recognizethe great contributions that Jim has made?

I realize that I sometimes fall into the habit ofusing this column to rant and rave about things that Iconsider to be not up to standard or totally unacceptable. Recently I have noticed a change that is a majorimprovement in the poor performance that I have been accustomed to. What I am referring to is thelength of time it takes for mail order companies to deliver products that have been ordered by telephone orvia the internet. In the past it would take over a week, and sometimes longer, for items that I ordered tobe delivered to my home. Recently I ordered an item on Monday and it was delivered on Tuesday then Iordered an item on Tuesday and it was delivered on Wednesday, in this case taking less than 24hours. Now granted the shipping point was not far away, in both cases Ohio, but the Fed Ex truck seemedto miraculously appear in my driveway almost as soon as I ordered the item. I don’t have any idea whathas caused this wonderful improvement in service but I do applaud and enjoy the promptness of the deliv-eries. Maybe someone has finally found out how to use computers to improve their productivity like hasbeen promised for years. Or maybe the new Fed Ex terminal at Bishop Airport is the cause but whatever itis I enjoy it.

For many decades I have observed the decline in the participation of people who enjoy cars andtrucks like I have all my life. I have read that this decline in participation was entirely my fault because Ihave not encouraged the younger generation to get involved and love classic cars and trucks. Some of thisnegativism can be written off by observing the numbers of vehicles shown at the “Back to the Bricks”,“Woodward Dream Cruise” and the “Sloan Auto Fair” but the nay sayers are quick to point out those are allold people showing their wares and there are very few young people there. I recently came across astatement from Akid Toyoda, the president of Toyota Motor Corporation, who was apologizing for the fal-ling sales and a large recall of his product. Mr. Toyoda’s statement was “They say that young people aremoving away from cars. But surely it is us –the automakers – who have abandoned our passion forcars.” What a relief. Finally someone in a position of power has recognized it is not solely the fault ofthe car and truck fans and the willing workers of the auto companies that are at fault for the declining en-joyment of the classic vehicles and certainly not the cause of GM and Chrysler being driven into bank-ruptcy. I find it interesting that nowhere have I ever read where the high paid executives who rode GMand Chrysler into the ground have ever taken even a small part of the blame for destroying two of the larg-est corporations of the twentieth century.

PPG Industries reports that silver is the top choice of car colors for the ninth straight year. That ishard to believe since half the driving public never heard the Lone Ranger shout “Hi-Yo Silver Away!”

That’s all for now.

2009 AwardsWe haven’t put our cars away for the winter yet,

but before you know it we will be heading out forour annual Christmas party and awards presen-tation in December. Enclosed in last month’sCrier you found an awards form to fill out. Please send it in ASAP or bring it with you to theNovember meeting. There needs to be enoughtime to have the necessary engraving completedin order to present the awards in December.Thank you to those who have already submittedtheir forms.

So here’s a quick review of what it is we handout. The actual Activity Plaque is a wooden shield shaped piece, suitable for display, of course. The topbears a large rectangular brass tag, engraved with “Buicktown.” Beneath that, engraved in brass, isthe club member’s name(s). Then, as activities are completed, the club member annually receives smallbrass tags engraved with the specific Chapter or BCA sanctioned event that he or she or they have par-ticipated in. Once all space is filled, a rectangular, wooden add-on is affixed to the bottom of the origi-nal shield with cup hooks to make more space for more activity tags. Pretty cool, huh? You too, can getyour very own if you do not have one yet. Be the envy of your fellow car enthusiasts-submit your infor-mation today!

BUICK NEWSHigh performance Regal GSmay be on the horizon

Mark Kleis

Europe currently enjoys the Opel Insig-nia OPC, a performance sedan with a turbo-charged 2.8-liter V6 producing 325 hp, whichis mated to a six-speed manual transmissionthat drives a Haldex-based all-wheel-drivesystem. Now, rumor has it that a similar ve-hicle could make its way to U.S. shores inthe form of a Buick Regal GS.

GM has announced plans to introduce theChinese market Buick Regal to the NorthAmerican market in either 2010 or 2011. Whatwe have just learned however is that in ad-dition to the standard-fare Buick Regal mod-els, there may very well be a high-performance model based on the Opel InsigniaOPC.

GM has announced that it will likelyoffer both a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter 4cylinder engine with output expected to be180 horsepower, as well as a turbocharged2.0-liter 4 cylinder engine with outputbumped up to the 220 hp neighborhood. GM hasnot released any plans that would include a6-speed manual transmission to be mated witheither of those engines.

Although the rumored Buick Regal GS isnot yet officially scheduled for U.S. con-sumption, rumor has it that if it were tocome to the U.S. it would most likely bepowered by the 3.6-liter, direct injected V6currently found in the newly released La-Crosse. Although the likely choice of the3.6-liter 280 hp V6 falls short when com-pared to the output found in the turbo-charged Opel counterpart, when coupled withreported 6-speed manual transmission, Brembobrakes, 19-inch wheels, and the Haldex-basedAWD system it will likely still prove to bea very capable performance-based car.
