    Important please read first2 Only use the line cord, power supply and rechargeable batteries supplied with

    your phone.

    Make sure that the power supply is connected to a known working socket.

    Connect your phone to the power supply and allow the batteries to charge for 24hours before connecting the line cord to your telephone socket.

    To make sure you get the best range and reception from your handset, avoidinterference by placing the base unit away from large metal objects such asfridge freezers and microwave ovens or electronic products such as computersand TVs.

    Answer machine handy hint

    Make sure the telephone is set to Answer and record and that the Ring delayis set to answer before any voicemail service i.e. BT Answer 1571, or similar.The default setting is four rings. If you want to change this, please see page 42-43.

    Inductive coupler

    The BT4500 has an in-built inductive coupler for use with digital hearing aids.

    Where to put your phone

    Place the base within3 metres of a mains powersocket and 3 metres of aphone socket so the cableswill reach.

    Make sure its at least a

    metre away from otherelectrical appliances to avoidinterference.

    Dont place the phone orbase in a bathroom or otherhumid area.

    The product works bysending radio signals

    between the handset andbase. The strength of thesignal depends on where youposition the base. Putting itas high as possible can helpgive you the best signal.

    IMPORTANT

    Dont connect the phone lineto a phone socket until thehandset is fully charged.

    The base station shouldbe plugged into the mainspower socket all the time.

    1. Plug the mainspower adaptorinto the base.

    2. Plug the other endof the power adaptorinto the wall powersocket and switch on.

    Talk/Standby timeUnder ideal conditions, thehandset batteries should giveup to 16 hours talk time or180 hours standby on a singlecharge. (This doesnt mean youcan unplug the base or leavethe handset for this length of

    time without charge).Please note that new Ni-MHrechargeable batteries dont reachfull capacity until theyve been innormal use for several days.

    Battery Low warningThe icon will flash, youllsee the message BatteryLowin the display and hear awarning beep every minute,to indicate that you need torecharge your handset. You canremove the display message byselecting Hide. If the batterycharge completely runs out,the display will show Charge

    Batteries!. You must rechargethe handset batteries beforeyou can use the handset. If thecharge completely runs out thehandset will switch off. Placethe handset on the base orcharger to charge.

    2 Activate the batteries andfollow the Set-up wizard

    1. Activate the batteries by pulling the plastic tabaway from the back of the handset.

    Rechargeable batteriesalready fitted

    Remove this taband charge batteries

    for 24 hours before use.

    2. The Power on animation will start up and then the

    handset will check for a link with the base station,once found the screen will show Settimeanddate. The set-up wizard will take you through thesteps for: setting the time and date, recording youroutgoing message for the answer machine, usingCaller Display, setting call blocking and adding

    contacts to your phonebook. Select Yesby pressing the Left option button if you

    want to follow the set-up wizard prompt or selectNoby pressing the Right option button to continueto the next prompt until set up is complete.

    Battery performance

    To keep the batteries in thebest condition, leave thehandset off the base for afew hours at a time.

    Running the batteries rightdown at least once a week

    will help them last as long aspossible.

    After charging your handsetfor the first time, subsequentcharging time for thebatteries is approximately8 hours.

    The charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries willgo down over time, whichwill reduce the talk andstandby time. Eventuallytheyll need replacing.For details on how to getreplacement batteries, callthe helpline on 0800 1456789*.

    3. Once set-up is complete your handset will displayPleasechecklinecord, place the handset on thebase to charge until step 4.

    4. After 24 hours, plug the phone line cord into thephone wall socket.

    IMPORTANTCharge the handset batteries for 24 hours or yourphone might not work.

    Set up your additional handsets (multi packs only)

    1. For additional handsets and chargers: plug the

    mains power adaptor into the back of the chargerand plug the other end into the mains wall socketand switch on the power.

    2. Activate the batteries as explained on page 5. If youset the time and date on the first handset then itwill be shared with all other handsets in your multipack once you activate the batteries.

    3. Place the handset on the charger to charge for24 hours.

    If you ever need to remove the batteries, simplyslide open the battery compartment cover and easeout the batteries.

    4 Block nuisance callsThe BT4500 can block calls from certain call types,e.g. international calls or from specific numbersto help prevent nuisance calls. You can store up to10 specific blocked numbers. Calls from numbersstored in your blocked calls list cannot leave amessage on your answer machine but calls blockedby call type can.

    1. Select Menu, scroll to Callcontrolandpress OK.

    2. Press until Blockcallsis displayed and pressOK. You now have 2 choices:

    i) To block calls by type, when Bycall typeisdisplayed, press OK. Press or to displaythe call type you want: Int.national, Withheldnumbers, NoCallerIDor Payphoneand pressOK. Then press or to display AllowedorBlockedand press OKto save.

    Finding your way around your phoneYour BT4500 has an easy to use menu system. Each menu has a list of options,which you can see on the menu map on the next page.

    When the handset is switched on and at the home screen:

    1. Select Menuby pressing the Left option button to open the main menu.

    2. Use the or button to scroll through the available menu options.

    3. When the menu you want is displayed, select OKby pressing the Leftoption button.

    4. Use the or button to scroll through the available sub menu options.When the sub menu you want is displayed, select OKby pressing the Leftoption button.

    Select the Backoption if you want to return to the previous screen.

    To exit a menu and return to the home screen, press .

    If no buttons are pressed for 30 seconds, the handset returns to the homescreen automatically.

    When you make a call, thegreen In use light on thebase flashes.

    Auto end

    If auto end is set to On youcan end a call by placing thehandset back in the base If autoend is set to Off, youll need topress to end the call.Auto end On is the defaultsetting. See page 55-56.

    Auto answer

    If auto answer is set to On youcan answer a call by lifting the

    handset off the base. If autoanswer is set to Off, youll needto lift the handset off the baseand press too. Auto answerOn is the default setting.See page 55-56.

    To switch the handset off1. Press and hold until the handset turns off.

    To switch the handset on

    1. Press and hold until the handset turns on.

    Make an external call

    2. When you hear the dial tone, enter the number.

    Preparatory dialling

    Receive a call

    When you receive a call, the phone rings and thedisplay shows Incomingcall. If youve got a caller

    display service, the display shows the callers numberif its available or the callers name if it matches anentry stored in your phonebooks contact list.

    1. Press to accept the call. Or, to accept the call inhandsfree mode, press .

    Using the phoneCall timerYour handset will automaticallytime your outgoing andincoming calls. The handsetshows the length of time bothduring and for a few secondsafter your call.

    You can also press toswitch between calls.

    Out of range warning

    When the handset is out ofrange of the base, the displaywill show Searchingforbase, the backlight will turnup to 100% to indicate the alertmessage and you will hear awarning tone. After 60 secondsthe display will show Nobaselink.Checkbase. You needto move back within range ofthe base station.

    If you move out of range whenyoure on a call, youll lose yourconnection. The handset willautomatically re-connect tothe base when you move backwithin range.

    Call WaitingIf youve got a call waiting service and it is switchedon, your phone will alert you to a second incomingcall if youre already engaged on an external call.

    Handsfree

    Handsfree lets you talk to yourcaller without holding thehandset and means that otherpeople in the room can listen

    to your conversation over theloudspeaker.

    During a handsfree call,press or to changethe volume.

    Incoming speech / Handsfree volumeDuring a call, you can adjust the handset incomingspeech or loudspeaker volume. There are five levels.The default setting is Level 3.

    1. Press or to increase or decrease the volume.The first press will present the Call volume screen so

    you can see the current volume level. Subsequentpresses will change the volume, you will hear thevolume level with each press.

    Amplify

    During a call you can boost the incoming speechvolume by pressing the Amplifybutton on the

    side of the handset. To turn off, press the buttonagain. The volume will only be boosted during thecall, once the call has ended the incoming speechvolume will return to the previously set level.

    Make a handsfree call

    1. Enter the number then press . is displayed.You hear your call over the handset loudspeaker.Press to switch the call between the earpieceand the loudspeaker.

    2. Press to end the call.

    Answer a call handsfreeWhen the phone rings:

    1. Press to answer the call. You will hear yourcaller over the loudspeaker.

    Switch to handsfree during a call

    1. During a call, press to put the call on theloudspeaker. To switch handsfree off and return thecall to the earpiece, press again.

    Redial

    Telephone numbers that you have called are savedin the Calls list. There is not a separate redial list, all

    calls are saved in the Calls list. The Calls list holds upto 50 incoming (missed and answered) calls and 30outgoing calls.

    To redial a number see, View and access optionsin the Calls list on page 36. You can also save anumber youve called to your contacts, delete a

    number youve called or delete all numbers fromthe Calls list, see page 37-38.

    Voicemail (BT 1571)

    When recording a call, youwill be notified if there is only1 minute of recording timeleft in the memory by an errortone and the display will showMemoryfullin1minute.

    Record a call1. During a call, press . The icon will appear

    on the display next to the call timer to indicate thatthe call is now being recorded but there will be noaudible notification given.

    2. To stop recording, select Stopor press .

    Recordedcallsavedwill be displayed.Play a recorded call

    You can either, press when the handset is inidle mode or:

    1. From the home screen, press Menu.

    2. Press until Recordedcallsis displayed andpress OK.

    3. Press or to scroll to the call you want to playand press Options.

    If the handset ringer is switched

    off on a handset, it will betemporarily switched back on sothe handset can be found.

    Paging calls cant be answeredby a handset.

    To lock the keypad1. Press and hold for 2 seconds. The handset gives

    a confirmation tone and Keypadlockedis brieflydisplayed before returning to the idle screen withthe icon displayed.

    To unlock the keypad

    1. Press and hold for 2 seconds. The handset givesa confirmation tone and KeypadUnlockdis brieflydisplayed before returning to idle.

    Turn the handset ringer on or off

    1. Press and hold for 2 seconds to turn the

    handset ringer on or off. The display will brieflyshow Ringeronoroffbefore reverting to the idlescreen with the icon displayed if the ringer hasbeen turned off.

    Find handset (Paging)

    You can ring a handset to help find it.

    1. Press on the base. All handsets registered tothe base will ring and the screen will show HereIam!for up to 2 minutes.

    2. To stop the ringing, press on the base again orselect Endor press on any handset.

    You can lock the keypad so thatit cant be used accidentallywhile youre carrying it around.

    With the keypad locked, youcan still call the emergencyservices on 999 and 112 usingpreparatory dialling and youcan still answer incoming calls

    and operate the in call featuresas normal. When the call isended, the comes on again.

    Under the call control menu are the features Do notdisturb and Block calls. Do not disturb allows callsto be received silently with minimal notification.

    Set-up Do not disturb

    1. Select Menu, scroll to Call controlandpress OK.

    3. Press or to display Onor Offand press OKtoselect. The chosen setting will be displayed and youwill hear a confirmation tone.

    Block nuisance calls

    The BT4500 can block calls from certain call types,e.g. international calls or from specific numbersto help prevent nuisance calls. You can store up to10 specific blocked numbers. Calls from numbersstored in your blocked calls list cannot leave amessage on your answer machine but calls blockedby call type can.

    1. Select Menu, scroll to Call controlandselect OK.

    2. Press to display Blockcallsand press OK.

    Call control settingsWhen set to On, the base andhandset ringer volumes (onall handsets registered to thebase) will be set to Off. Thehandset backlight will not comeon when the phone rings andthe only tones that the handsetwill emit are the battery low

    and out of range warnings. Thebase call screening volume andmessage alert will also be setto Off.

    You can set Do not disturb toOn or Off. The default settingis Off.

    When set to On, the idle screenwill display DONOTDISTURBinstead of the number ofmissed calls or the handsetname if there are no missedcalls presented.

    Please note, other productsconnected to the line are not

    compatible with this featureand will still ring.

    Calls list

    The Calls list holds up to 50 incoming (missed andanswered) calls and 30 outgoing calls. The dateand time of the call is also stored. If you haventsubscribed to a Caller Display service, Nonumberwillbe displayed in the Calls list for incoming calls but thetime and date will still be recorded.

    Your BT4500 can digitally record up to 60 minutesof messages. You can operate your answer machinefrom: the handset, the base (see page 48) orremotely from any other Touchtone telephone(see page 50).

    Answer delay

    Time saver

    When you ring in to access youranswer machine remotely, ifyou have set Time saver as theanswer delay and you have newmessages it will answer after 10seconds. If you dont have newmessages it will answer after20 seconds. This means youcan hang up knowing that youhave no new messages, savingyou the time and the cost ofthe call.

    For compatibility with BT 1571

    (or another voicemail service)

    Make sure the answer delay is

    set for your answer machineto answer before the voicemailservice. Therefore, the answerdelay should be less than onyour voicemail service. For BT1571 do not set the answerdelay to more than 5 rings.

    Set the maximum message length

    You can set the maximum length that an answer

    machine message can be: 1 minute, 2 minutes or 3minutes. The default setting is 3 minutes.

    While screening, you canadjust the volume by pressing

    You can also stop a callerleaving a message by pressing

    on the base during messagerecording. The caller will hear,

    When you receive newmessages, the home screen willdisplay the number of messagesstored. The button on thebase will flash and the messagealert on the base will beep.

    The number of messagesdisplayed includes all messagesstored, new and old (played).When a message is deletedthe display message will beupdated accordingly.

    Each message is played back

    with the day, date and time itwas received announced.

    Using call screeningWhen the phone rings, wait for the answer machineto take the call. When the caller begins to leave amessage, the display will show Screening?If youwant to talk to the caller, press to take the call.This will stop the recording if its started.

    New (unplayed) messages areplayed first (oldest to mostrecent) and then old (played)messages (oldest to mostrecent).

    If the memory is full, the answerphone icon on the home screenwill display Fullunderneath it.

    You can still enter the answerphone menu and playback yourmessages, however, you will seea warning message Memoryfull.Nomessagescanbeleft beforeyou enter the menu and Memoryfullwill be announced beforenew or old messages are played

    back.Message playback is stopped ifyou receive an incoming call.

    You can toggle between privateplayback through the handsetand handsfree playback bypressing the button. Thedefault is private playback.

    If your answer machine

    memory becomes full and it isset to Answer and record it willautomatically switch to Answeronly mode. Once messageshave been deleted and thereis memory available again, themachine will revert to Answerand record mode (unless

    you have changed the modeyourself to Answer only usingthe handset menu).

    You will need to deletemessages before your answermachine will be able to recordnew ones. To delete old (played)messages, see page 47 and 49.

    If you dont press within3 seconds you will hear,Messages saved.

    Press to skip forward to the start of the nextmessage.

    With First ring set to Off, an

    incoming external call will bedisplayed visually before thehandset(s) start to ring for thesecond burst of ringing.

    If you wish to revert to notusing a PBX access code, youneed to go into the PBX codemenu and delete all the digitsby selecting Clear, then selectSave.

    The default system PIN is 0000.You can change this to yourown preferred 4-digit code.

    The system PIN is used whenchanging certain settings andfor registration/de-registration.

    PBX access code

    If you reset the base settings all

    The default time format is12 hour.

    You must enter the full date:day, month and year.

    If you didnt set the time and date when you firstset-up your phone then you will need to do sobefore you can set an alarm. The clock will also bedisplayed on the handset screen in idle mode.

    If you have subscribed to a Caller Display service thetime and month will be set when you receive yourfirst call but you will still need to set the year.

    If you set an alarm the displaywill show the time andfrequency setting after youselect Save.

    If an incoming call is receivedwhile the alarm is going off,the alarm notification willimmediately stop and theincoming call will be shownon the display. The alarm willnot resume.

    Set an alarm

    Stopping the alarm when it goes off

    When the alarm goes off, the selected melody will

    play at an ascending volume, the handset backlightwill flash and the display will show the alarm time.The alarm will sound for 30 seconds and thenthe handset will return to idle, if the alarm isntstopped or set to snooze, it will sound once moreafter 1 minute.

    To stop the alarm, press or selectStop

    .To activate a ten minute snooze, select Snoozeor anyother button (except orStop). You can set snoozeas many times as you want until you select Stop.

    With the ring back feature you

    can get an automatic call backfrom an engaged number. Noneed to dial a busy number overand over again. Just dial 5, waitfor a confirmation message andhang up. Your phone will keeptrying the busy number for upto 45 minutes.

    Call Waiting lets you know if

    another person is trying to callyou while youre on anothercall. If a second caller rings, youwill hear a beep in the handsetearpiece. If youve subscribedto Caller Display, the display willshow the callers details as well.

    Cancel Ringback

    1. Select Menu, scroll to display CallingFeaturesand press OK.

    2. Press display CancelRingbackand press OK.

    3. The service will be called and the display will showCancelling. Follow the spoken instructions orlisten for confirmation/status.

    Using Call Waiting

    Reminder call lets you book an

    alarm call. Like an alarm clock,except it lets you book an alarmcall days in advance. Set repeatreminders every day or as aone-off call to remind you of aspecific event.

    The type of calls you can barare: All outgoing calls, Intl.Nat & Mobile calls, Bar Intlcalls, Operator calls & texts, *

    and # calls and Premiumrate calls.

    Using Reminder call

    1. Select Menu, scroll to display CallingFeaturesand press OK.
