Supporters of the village’sdecision and those opposedonce again crammed into thevillage’s meeting room to tradebarbs at one another and voicetheir opinion on the issue.

Opponents, which includedresidents from Brookfield con-cerned about how the Lyonspolice layoffs would affecttheir police force, largely ac-cused the village, and Presi-dent Christopher Getty specifi-cally, with putting residents indanger. The village defendedthe layoffs as a cost-cuttingmeasure.

Trustee Patricia Kruegerwarned trustees that thevillage could face a danger-ous situation if more officersweren’t added to shifts.Quote of note: “You can’t havepolice officers working 18hours a day. It’s an accidentwaiting to happen,” PatriciaKrueger said.

5. Bull runWhat happened: Former

Brookfield resident Bill Hill-mann had a run in with a Span-ish bull July 9, and that landedhim in the hospital with a bighole in his hip and an experi-ence he won’t soon forget.

He already had run withthe herd through the narrow, walled lined streets at thefamous San Fermin festival in

Pamplona, Spain, when he sawthe suelto – a lone bull behindthe pack. Hillmann, knownas possibly the best Americanbull runner, saw his bull andthey locked eyes. He was lead-ing the bull along the streetfollowed by a group of threeBritish men, who, accordingto Hillmann, displayed littleexperience with the run.

“You need to remain calm,”Hillmann said from his bedin a Pamplona hospital room.“They didn’t do that.”

As Hillmann led the bull, hewas pushed, tripped and fell tothe ground and the 1,500-poundbull charged and gored him.

Quote of note: “I didn’tknow I was gored because, there was no pain at all. Aparamedic pulled me out andI looked down and saw thisracquetball-sized hole in mythigh. It really didn’t startto hurt until the doctors atthe hospital starting puttingtheir fingers in it ... but thenthey gave me morphine,” BillHillmann said.

6. Murderer sentencedWhat happened: John L.

Wilson Jr., was found guilty offirst-degree murder in the 2011murder of 14-year-old Lyons

Township High School studentKelli O’Laughlin.

The verdict, after the Sep-tember trial, came from a juryof five men and seven women, which spent almost two anda half hours deliberating.Wilson received four guiltyverdicts from the jury.

During the trial, prosecu-tors told the jury that Wilsonwas burglarizing the O’Laugh-lin’s Indian Head Park homewhen Kelli returned homefrom school and surprised himin the act.

She was stabbed eighttimes with a knife from thefamily’s kitchen. Kelli’s mom,

Brenda O’Laughlin found herafter returning home fromwork and rushed her to thehospital where she was pro-nounced dead.

was sentenced to spend inprison.

7. Deep freezeWhat happened: Polar Vor-

tex: If you’d never heard theterm before, you certainly hadafter last winter.

2014 will forever be identi-fied with its significant snowfalls and the coldest weatherin two decades.

Public works departmentsacross the region used somuch salt on the road the ranout – and then had to purchasemore at a significantly higherprice.

On the coldest days, schoolsacross the area canceled class-es citing the extreme weatherconditions.

Quote of note: “We’re onlygoing to salt the main streetsand streets with schools, butnot residential streets. We’retrying to preserve the salt wehave,” Riverside Public WorksDirector Ed Bailey said.

to close Robinson School inLyons Nov. 6, not flu.

A large number of absencesled to the decision to close theschool at 4431 Gage Avenueand school officials posted anote on the school website stat-ing the flu was the cause. How-ever, Cook County Departmentof Public Health spokeswomanAmy Poore said the influenzavirus was not the cause of thelarge number of reported sickstudents at the school.

“It’s commonly called thestomach flu – but there’s nosuch thing as stomach flu,”Poore said.

The likely culprit was anorovirus, which can cause fe-ver, a range of gastrointestinalproblems and is highly conta-gious. Poore said the norovirusis easily spread, especiallyin environments like schoolswhere kids are in close contactwith one another.

District 103 SuperintendentMary JoVladika said the De-partment of Public Health sug-gested school officials to closethe school for a deep cleaning.

Nazareth Academy in La

Grange Park also had to closein December due to a largenumber of absences caused bythe flu.

9. Farewell, JudyWhat happened:News of the

death Illinois comptroller andRiverside resident Judy BaarTopinka came as a shock tomany of those in her Riversidecommunity who rememberedher as a larger-than-life person-

ality who never forgot whereshe came from.

Riverside Village PresidentBen Stills said “The passing ofJudy Baar Topinka leaves anunfillable void. She exempli-fied all that is good in publicservice.”

Grossdale Station at 8820 1/2Brookfield Avenue celebrated

its 125th anniversary Oct. 26with the help of the BrookfieldHistorical Society.

In 1889, developer SamuelEberly Gross constructed arailroad station on the Chi-cago, Burlington and Quincyrail line. He would shortlythereafter construct twomore stations, and used thosethree stops as selling pointsfor his lots and houses in theBrookfield area. Today, onlyone of these stations remains, which is now used to house theBrookfield Historical Society.

Grossdale Station is on theNational Register of HistoricPlaces.

11. Last callWhat happened:Oct. 13 was

last call for early morningdrinkers in Brookfield afterthe Village Board voted unan-imously to eliminate 4 a.m.licenses effective Jan. 21, 2015.

The controversial licens-es came under fire by policeofficials, whomade a case tothe board that the late night li-cense is a magnet for nuisancecomplaints and trouble.

Owners of those bars thatstill have a Class 1 license tostay open until 4 a.m Fridaysand Saturdays said losing theadded hours would have a dev-astating impact on business.

Quote of note: “Brixie’s iscelebrating its 80th year. Beinga late night bar is the reasonwe have been able to stay inbusiness,” said Brixie’s ownerChristopher DiBraccio.

Life5

'Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and to see just who in this little house lived.

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand,On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,A sobering thought came through my mind

For this house was different, it was dark and dreary,The home of a Soldier, I could now see clearly.

The Soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,Not how I picture a United States Soldier

Was this the Hero of whom I’d just read?Curled up on a pancho, the floor for a bed?

I realized the families that I saw this night, owed their lives to these Soldiers who were willing to fight.

Soon round the world, the children would play, and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, because of the Soldiers, like the one lying here.

I couldn’t help wondering how many lay alone,on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.

The very thought brought a tear to my eye,I dropped to one knee and started to cry.

The Soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,“Santa don’t cry, for this life is my choice.”

“I fight for freedom. I don’t ask for more,”“My life is my God, my Country, my Corps.”

The Soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,as we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.

I didn’t want to leave, on that cold, dark night, this Guardian Of Honor, so willing to fight.

Then the Soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, whispered,“Carry on Santa.....It’s Christmas Day....., All is secure.”

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,Merry Christmas my friend....and to all a Good Night.

A SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS

God Bless the U.S. Military...each and every one of them!

Peace to AllNever the Christmas MorningNever the Old Year endsPeople think of peopleOld days...Old times...Old friends....

S10

As I reflect back on my first year as library director at theMcCook Public Library, I am delighted at the progress madethis past year and the vision the Board of Trustees, staff and Ihave for the future of this organization.

Although I have been a library director at two libraries inIllinois and Iowa with largerstaffs and budgets, I havefound extreme satisfaction inbeing a hands-on director andgetting to personally knoweach of our library patrons. Itamazes me this small commu-nity of 228 people managed tocreate a library more than 40 years ago and recently funded anaddition in 2011.

The library is a hidden gem of an aesthetically pleasingbuilding and a staff providing exceptional customer service. The comments we get from first time visitors is “Wow, what anice library!”

This past year, we installed Wi-Fi access, a Facebook pres-ence and in the next month, we will launch a new website.

Are you tired of being on a wait list for the current best-sellers for months at your local library? Are you looking forthat eclectic jazz compact disc or current copy of the BreakingBad series? We have it for you. We welcome you to come to ourlibrary to check out our copies. With your current library card(in good standing) from neighboring libraries, you are able totake these items home and return them to your local library.

For residents in Countryside and Indian Head Park or othercommunities that do not have a public library, nonresidentcards are available for purchase based on your tax bill or rent-er’s fee. Some will even reimburse a portion of the library cardfee. For employees that work for area businesses, we welcomeyou to visit during a lunch hour or after work to pick up thatcurrent best-seller or check out a current magazine or DVD.

We launched a new program, Coffee and Conversation, from11 a.m. to noon the third Tuesday of the month where peopledrop in for lively conversation and delicious pastries as theymeet a variety of people from neighboring suburbs. Our nextmeeting is scheduled Jan. 20. Look for our upcoming openhouse and date for our annual book/magazine sale.

We also have comfortable areas for reading and study roomsavailable for you. Stop by with your children or grandkids tosee our adorable children’s room and book collection and ourweekly story hour from 4 to 5 p.m. Fridays. The staff and I lookforward to seeing you very soon.

SOUND OFFFreedom of speechmust be upheldI’m going to start my own

protest right here, and it’sagainst people in the west-ern suburbs making ignorantcomments about the rights ofother people. Can you imaginewhat kind of riots there would ifpeople could not pass judgmenton people from other ethnic andsocial economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look likeDisneyland.

Media needs to stopsensationalizingI certainly agree with last

week’s article “Officer was doinghis job.” The media needs to stopbuilding this up and antagoniz-ing people. They are somewhatresponsible for all the protests. The officer was doing his job.

Sound Off reflectsopinions, not factsI’d like to remind readers of

the SoundOff column that, asthe guidelines clearly state thecomments “should not be takenas fact.” Several recent commentsabout the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from thesame person, aremisleading atbest and, in some cases, simplynot true. For the record, a routineexit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from amajorityof the board, andwill cost about10 cents per resident; it is not a“pool survey.” The proposed turf atNewton Park represents the bestprice negotiated by a purchasingcooperative commonly used bypublic agencies, and is far from“themost expensive turf option.”It has yet to be decidedwhichfeatureswill be included. I wouldencourage all readers to contactthe Park District, or visit their web-site, for accurate information.

Do not sign referendumfor Downers GroveI encourage you to not sign

any referendum for a newpolice station and fire station onOgden Avenue. For 30 years theresidents of Burlington Highlandsand Orchard Brook have had toput our lives on the line to try toenter onto Ogden Avenue or toexit into the Highlands from Og-

den Avenue. With the increasedtoll fees, there has been a hugeincrease in traffic on Ogden and abig increase of semi trucks usingOgden now to avoid toll fees. Wehave been trying to get a controlsignal between Saratoga andBelmont for 30 years to no avail.Anyone who thinks there is noproblem needs only to witnessthe hazard between 4 p.m. 7p.m. and 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. everyday with the amount of traffic.Regardless what the cost is to putthe new station on Ogden Avenuein order to get a controlled signal,it will be worth every dollar to in-sure the safety of our residents inour area. I encourage the councilto proceed with the project.

Time to act in D-200A recent CUSD 200 report

states we have the second-low-est property taxes collected perstudent, second-lowest tax rate, abelow average operation expenseper pupil, and below the stateaverage in per pupil spending.Congratulations BOE – right? No,these austere numbersmeanwecan’t competewith surroundingdistricts to keep andmaintaingreat teachers and provide currenttechnology and services for ourchildren. The last ED referendumwas 30 years ago. Time to act.

COUNTRYSIDE – Therewasn’t a person in attendanceat a memorial conducted Dec.17 for the late Illinois Comp-troller Judy Baar Topinka whodidn’t remark onher feisty per-sonality, humor and commit-ment to the people of Illinoiswhen asked their impressionof the longtime public servant.

Topinka, who requestedthat no wake or funeral beheld, did allow for her family, friends and colleagues to re-member her with a memorialservice a week after she diedof a stroke.

Perhaps her request not tohave a funeral was to avoidholding a somber affair in hername. Topinka, a longtimeRiverside resident, was wellknown for – asmany remarkedat the memorial – being some-one who would have wantedthe room upbeat. To that end,the memorial would have beena success in her eyes.

Attendees fondly recalledher spirited personality andher unique touch as a politi-cian in Illinois.

Cook County Commis-sioner Jeff Tobolski said hethought of Topinka as a men-tor and highly respected herability to work across the aisle– or with anyone for that mat-ter – to get the job done.

“[Topinka] always sawthings through to the end,” To-bolski recalled. “What a greatloss for the state of Illinois.”

As Gov.-elect Bruce Rauneralsowould recall during his re-marks, Tobolski said just daysfollowing her death, he re-ceived a tin of holiday cookiesfrom Topinka. Tobolski saidgifts like that were not uncom-mon, and he fondly recalled re-ceiving her signature newspa-per clippings with notes whenshe felt a good job was done bythe recipient.

Likewise, Cook CountyBoard President Toni Pre-ckwinkle said she admiredTopinka for her straightfor-ward manner and ability tospeak her mind.

“I gave her high marks forhonesty,” Preckwinkle said.

The memorial began with a

rendition of “Amazing Grace”sung by the Salem BaptistChurch Choir and was followedwith a procession of the IllinoisState Police Color Guard.

Joseph Birkett, judge forthe second district of IllinoisAppellate Court and Topin-ka’s running mate during her2006 bid for the governor’smansion, led as master of cer-emonies. He recalled pickingTopinka up at 6 a.m. the firstmorning of the 2006 campaign. With her trademark large cof-fee in hand, she got into the carwith Birkett only to have thebottom of it fall out on her lap.

“It’s a good thing I woredark pants; let’s go,” he re-called her saying.

Gov. Pat Quinn remem-bered Topinka in his remarksas a politician who went theextra mile and then some.

“She volunteered for verydifficult and challenging as-signments throughout her life,”Quinn said. “She was alwaysknown for telling the truth – atruth teller … she spoke fromher heart and told the truth.”

Considered a political out-sider, especially early in hercareer, she served as a poli-tician to the beat of her owndrum and knew how to getpeople to work together – evenwhen it might put her oppositeher party and open her to crit-icism. She was a Republicanthat was pro-gay marriage,pro-union and pro-choice.

Brookfield resident to open piano barBy KRISTIN PEDICINI

[email protected]

LA GRANGE – A restau-rant doubling as a piano barand pub is making its wayto the La Grange area nextmonth.

Adele’s Front Room, 13 S.La Grange Road, is projectedto open Jan. 30, owner BrianCarrol said, explaining therestaurant gets both its nameand opening date from hisgrandmother.

Adele was his grand-mother’s name, and the open-ing date was her birthday. Therestaurant is even themed af-ter one of her sayings, “Huma few bars, and we’ll play it byear,” he said.

“We came from a big fami-ly, and that’s how we grew up,”Carrol said. “[She] was alwaysaround the piano singing andshowing everyone a good time,

even if they weren’t family.”The idea for Adele’s Front

Room is small-plated food toshare with craft cocktails, avariety of beers, nice wine andpiano music, he said.

As for the food menu, Car-rol said a specific genre hasyet to be decided, but he plansto pay special attention to theway the restaurant serves andcooks the food and the wayeach dish tastes.

“We’re letting our servicespeak for ourselves,” Carrolsaid. “We want everyone thatwalks through the door to en-joy themselves.”

Although Carrol has al-ready secured the restaurant’sbusiness and liquor license,he’s still waiting on architec-tural drawings.

“I really want to get thisopen, but I want to get it openthe right way and that re-quires a lot of time,” he said.

Opening Adele’s FrontRoom will bring about eightjobs to the area, Carrol said, who also owns Mollie’s PublicHouse in Riverside.

The public house also isnamed after one of Carrol’sgrandmothers, and it wasopened on that grandma’sbirthday as well.

Opening a new business inLa Grange came as an idea af-ter Carrol and his wife spent aSunday afternoon in the down-town area.

“We were walking aroundand it was jam packed, and itseems like every other week-end something is going on,” hesaid.

“[La Grange] has got thatnice, family feel but on a big-ger scale as far as restaurantsgo,” Carrol said. “We figuredwe made it here in Riverside, let’s see if we can make it in LaGrange.”

Rauner said Topinka ledthe “ultimate life” during hisremarks and praised her loy-alty and commitment to pub-lic service.

Lots of laughterTopinka, who began her

career as a journalist, mighthave enjoyed the commentsby Rich Miller, publisher ofIllinois politics blog, CapitalFax, and radio personalityRoe Conn most – both for theirlevity and their directness.

Featured in a video seg-

ment speaking to former Gov.Rod Blagojevich, Topinka wasknown for her wry smile andhumor. Delivered in her sig-nature brash way, she coulddeliver a right hook of a joke.

It was fitting at the memo-rial that the political elite inattendance, which includedthe likes of Chicago May-or Rahm Emanuel and U.S.Sen. Mark Kirk, would notbe spared a ribbing in theremarks of Miller and Conn.Conn especially broughtmany to tears during his re-marks, though not of sadness, but of laughter.

Riffing on Quinn’s com-ment, Conn called Topinka a

“truth screamer” and said shewas a politician who could becounted on to tell it straight.

Keeping thememorial filledwith laughter and happy mem-ories was longtime friend andchief of staff Nancy Kimme, who spoke of her admiration– and frustration – with Topin-ka’s straight talk. She addedTopinka’s personality alwaysfilled the room.

“Judy always liked to playto a full house,” Kimme saidof the number of people in at-tendance. “So she would havebeen delighted today.”

Others joked she wouldhave wanted them to hold afundraiser at the event.

17A ton of spirit is packed in a shoebox

By JOE [email protected]

RIVERSIDE – Lauren San-dusky is 9 years old, and likeany 9-year-old child, Christ-mas is taking up much of hermental energy these days.

But Lauren isn’t thinkingabout the gifts she will findunder her own tree Christmasmorning – she’s making surechildren of lesser means havesomething to unwrap for theholiday.

Lauren, a student at Bly-the Park School in Riverside, and her mother, Linda, startedshopping at the first of the yearfor gifts that she has packedin shoeboxes donated by localshoe stores, which then werecollected by the Samaritan’sPurse relief organization forOperation Christmas Child.

Besides buying the gifts, friends, neighbors, relativesand strangers also contributeto the stockpile of gift items.

Under the program, the giftboxes then are shipped to less-fortunate children all over theworld. Since 1993, 113 millionboxes have been sent out by

the organization, according tothe Sandusky family.

This is the fourth year Lau-ren has participated in Opera-tion Christmas Child.

She has her own recipe formaking up a box. Items includea stuffed animal, toothbrush-es and toothpaste, T-shirts,

soap and washcloths, coloringbooks and crayons, and hardcandy.

“We usually put a little per-sonal note from Lauren andher picture,” Linda Sanduskysaid.

The Sandusky’s loaded the125 boxes packed by Lauren

into the car and dropped themoff to the Christian Life Centerin Berwyn in December wherethey then were picked up byNorth Carolina-based Opera-tion Christmas Child, whichdetermines where across theglobe the boxes eventually willbe delivered. A bar code is at-tached so donors can track towhich country the boxes aresent.

The expense of the boxes isnot limited to just the contentsfor the Sandusky family. Do-nors such as them are asked todonate $7 for each of the boxesto cover shipping costs.

For the experience Laurengets by the gesture, it’s worthit, Linda Sandusky said.

“I think its teaching her togive back to the community,”she said.”Lauren’s a gener-ous person by nature. But it’smade her realize that not ev-eryone lives as affluently aswe do.”

For Lauren, it’s simple.“We do it because it’s fun

and it makes us feel good,” shesaid.

LETTERSWest Suburban PADSlooks back on the year

To the Editor:I’m humbled when I walk

through our daytime SupportCenter on the way to my officeevery morning. Most of themen, women and families whoare here to meet with casemanagers, use computers, takea shower or do their laundryhave spent the previous nightsleeping en masse at a sheltersite hosted by congregations inOak Park, Forest Park, Berwyn orFranklin Park.

They were greeted by vol-unteers, many who have beenpart of PADS’ shelter operationsfor years. They were served adinner thoughtfully prepared byvolunteers and were watchedover as they slept by a crew ofsecond-shift volunteers. Theywere awakened by volunteerswho prepared and servedbreakfast while they cleaned upthe shelter space together. Asthey left the shelter at sunrise, they were handed a sack lunchprepared by volunteers. Nightafter night, from mid-Septemberto mid-May, a formidable net-work of PADS volunteers buildsa safety net to catch thoseexperiencing homelessness inyour community.

These gifts of time, treasureand shelter space make possible

the first step for many in theirtransition from housing crisis tohousing stability.

West Suburban PADS hashad another magnificent yearof growth and impact. We’rehelping more men, women andfamilies transition back to sta-ble housing – people who areunemployed or under-skilled,disabled by a chronic medicalcondition or struggling withtheir mental health, all of whomare experiencing a housingcrisis. I’m thrilled to report thatthis past year there were 15percent fewer people relying onour emergency shelter and 100percent more participating inour supportive housing pro-gram. In addition, we engagedmore than 100 people living onthe streets and for extendedperiods in the shelter to helpthem connect to services andhousing.

As we turn the page on2014, we want to express ourgratitude for this community’stremendous generosity and forenabling us to be there for thosewithout a home this holiday sea-son. It is on their behalf that wewrite this note of appreciationand best wishes for a happy andhealthy 2015.

Lynda SchuelerExecutive Director, West Suburban PADS

Jalen Clanton’s 3 lifts Bulldogs over LionsBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

LA GRANGE – Jalen Clan-ton’s huge 3-pointer happenedso fast the sophomore didn’teven have a chance to get ner-vous.

Clanton received a nicepass from Daniko Jackson ona drive-and-kick and swishedthe 3 to give Riverside-Brook-field a three-point lead with33 seconds left. That proved tobe the game winner Saturdaynight at Lyons Township.

The Bulldogs (9-0) remainedundefeated with a 66-64 winagainst their neighbors. LT (8-2) lost for the first time sincethe season opener against Ste-venson.

“Daniko told me to go to thecornerwhen he drives, he gaveme a great pass and I knockedit down,” said Clanton, whoalso admitted this was R-B’sbiggestwin of the season so far.“It was just catch and shoot. Itwas a natural reaction. Catchit, put it up, shoot it as best as Ican and pray it goes in.”

Clanton scored 14 pointsand was one of three Bulldogsto score in double figures.Sam Johnson (18 points, 10 re-bounds) and Mark Smith (16points, 12 rebounds) both haddouble-doubles.

Smith had 10 points in thefirst quarter and the Bulldogsled 19-11 after the quarter.

LT star Harrison Niego had15 points in the second quar-ter to get the Lions back inthe game, including a running30-footer at the buzzer. LT led39-37 at halftime after Niego’slong 3.

The Bulldogs were able totake a 56-50 lead early in thefourth quarter, despite Jack-son, Johnson and startingguard Henry Trelenberg allplayingwith four fouls. Trelen-berg fouled out with 2:05 left.

“The gamehad a lot of highsand lows,” R-B coach Tom Mc-Closkey said. “We got in foultrouble and that certainly wasa factor, but Jalen hit a hugeshot for us.

“It’s a big win. It’s two goodteams and a local rivalry, so wefeel fortunate to have the win.”

The Lions clawed back toa 60-60 tie late in the fourth.Sam Johnson and Noah Niegoexchanged baskets to makeit 62-62, setting the stage for

Clanton’s big 3.R-B failed to ice the game

at the free-throw line, miss-ing two out of three in thefinal 11 seconds. That gaveHarrison Niego a half-courtattempt to win the game atthe buzzer, but it was wide ofthe basket.

Harrison Niego finishedwith 26 points and JaquanPhipps had 20 for LT. The Li-ons were just 10 for 22 from thefree-throw line while the Bull-

dogs were 6 for 12.“They’re good and we’re

good and it came down to thebuzzer,” LT coach Tom Sloansaid. “They got a lot of easybaskets, lobs over the top, drives. The last basket theygot, they got in the paint andthe kickout was a great pass, but we got beat off the dribbleto initiate that.

“Hopefully we get thechance to play them again ...at York.”

Both teams will play atYork’s Jack Tosh HolidayClassic, which starts Friday.
