From the Head of Department...indisputable rights, being ends in themselves, and experiencing inner lives rich in feelings, memories, thoughts, and emotions.

While ethical discourse tends to focus on the distinction between ethical and unethical behaviour, with a view to avoiding the latter, wisdom is further understood to imply ability and desire to choose from among ethical behaviours. State of the art technology is unable to be ethically aware and consequently unable to choose between ethical behaviours.

A purely technologically based approach to the development and implementation of business processes can devalue human thinking. A mutually beneficial way forward is to argue for a philosophically symbiotic approach to the design and implementation of business processes in order to detect humanly devaluing philosophies. In particular, the non-materialistic ‘essence’ of human beings which contains the ability to gain practical wisdom through learning, emotion, inquiry and change should be highlighted and acknowledged.

This edition of BSI Connection celebrates our first year as the Department Business Strategy and Innovation. We noted the launch of the department back in March and subsequent editions of this newsletter have recorded our journey since then.

In looking back, we can note the addition of several new staff members to the department, particularly in the area of Entrepreneurship. The formation of the Industry Advisory Board has led to many valuable conversations with our very engaged Board members who add great value to our activities. Over the course of 2019 we have celebrated great successes in the research space including several innovative and exciting projects and the launch of a number of grant funded initiatives. In the teaching space a number of staff have won awards and been recognised for their achievements in the scholarship of teaching.

It has been a great year brought about by the hard work of the BSI staff and the support and encouragement of our industry friends. Looking forward, we are committed to transitioning the BSI courses into the new Bachelor of Business to be launched in 2021. Work will continue on new and existing research projects and we will continue to build our industry engagement.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making the first year of BSI such a success. The staff of the Department of Business Strategy and Innovation intend to continue to make a difference through our teaching, our research and our engagement.

Best wishes to everyone for 2020!

A few years ago, if you said that digital systems would make it ridiculously easy to communicate your message to customers you would have been laughed out of the room. The idea that authenticity and engagement drive sales is nothing new.

However, the way we go about discussing business ideas or even engaging with potential customers has radically shifted in the past few years. This shift has been seen most dramatically in the

music industry. The idea that an aspiring musician would need to ‘get their name out there’ in order to find a record deal is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Now, a musician need only share that music, spend a small amount of money on promoting their content and they stand a good chance of gaining enough supporters to live from their craft. What this change means though is right at the heart of digital transformation and is something

How does digital transformation change the way we approach our potential customers?

that bigger more traditional businesses can take lessons from.

The potential growth for a company now has no real barriers. You could run a store from your living room that has a fulfilment centre in Japan. The downside of having no real barriers is there are no ‘barriers’ between you and the customer. Marketing has shifted from the creation of demand to the co-creation of value.

Chain for chain: Blockchain technology and supply chains in the Australian meat industry

Dr Yong WuProject Leader

The next AI super power: How Australia’s regional positioning and global outlook will pave the way for the futureThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the first human to land on the moon, a feat that was achieved by the US with a desperate motivation to beat the Russians’ space advances. In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has become the battleground of supremacy between the US and China. Amid the trade war triggered by both political and economic manoeuvres against each other, the rivalry culminated with the arrest of the daughter of Huawei’s chief officer and the daughter of its founder in December 2018.

For many, this event raised concerns over privacy and security of data collected from the use of technology, namely, smart phones and the ‘Internet of Things’

(IoT) (aka everything connected) and the risk of AI to rapidly analyse large amount of data for misuse. However, there is very little understanding of what happened and what could be the consequences in the long term from this event, particularly from the perspective of Australia’s strong ties with both US and China, and its regional positioning within Asia Pacific. The digital landscape will soon redefine the next world order.

Hence anticipating and learning from the latest developments will enable Australians to better prepare for the future, in terms of navigating the economic development, political alliances and the next business strategy.

Blockchain technology presents significant opportunities for any supply chain where products need to transact through different parties with different trust levels, and at different times.

Supply chains enabled with blockchain technology will offer enhanced transparency, accountability, coordination, traceability, and customer confidence with improved customer-oriented decision making for any industry.

Dr Yong Wu, Professor Peter Tatham and Associate Professor Villipuram Muthukkumarasamy are currently exploring the use of blockchain technology for the red meat industry with support from the Australian Meat Processing Corporation.

than 125 cities worldwide offering a great solution to the last mile problem.

As future logistics and operations managers, students were able to obtain inside information on innovative sustainable transportation solutions tackling first and last mile mobility services and its challenges.

Mr Jaiwardhane invited the class to Lime headquarters in Brisbane and distributed ride vouchers to the students.

To appreciate how a spatial assemblage (recycling waste management system) is constructed, it is necessary to look at how practices, performed by bundles of humans and non-humans, inside and outside households interact.

Drawing on Michael Callon’s concept of agencement, Dr Gustavo Guzman is exploring the idea of spatial agencing with regard to the actor-network connections in recycling waste management in Brazil.
