Talking to Greater Kash- mir, SK University of Agri- cultural Sciences and Tech- nology Jammu (SKUAST) expert, Dr Rajinder Pishan, said that they have devel- oped a total 186 orchard s across Jammu district to enhance income of the farm- ers especially in the case and crop failure. He informed that the orchards have been devel- oped in different areas of Jammu district including Balwal, Dansal, Khor and Akhnoor. “The areas have been chosen for the activity as they lack adequate irriga- tion facilities,” he said. He said the decades old mango orchards have also been rejuvenated in Akhnoor. “After 40 years the plants need a treatment and this is the regular pro- cess being done under the mission” he said. He informed that only one variety of mango plants ‘Dussari’ were planted in all orchards as the center gov- ernment gives subsidy on this variety only. He said that before devel- oping the orchards, the SAKAUST-J conducted study at 50 such places includ- ing 25 old orchards across Jammu and Samba districts. Pertinently, according to some estimates Jammu has 10,700 hectares land under mango plantation which last year produced 12,000 MT fruit. The National Horticulture Mission, a centrally spon- sored scheme was launched in 2005-06 to enhance horticul- ture production and improve nutritional security and provide income support to farm households and others through area-based region- ally differentiated strategies. For the schemes under the Mission, the Government of India contributes 85 per- cent funds, while 15 percent contribution is made by the State Governments. Jammu focuses on commercial mango cultivationSKUAST-J develops 186 orchards in Jammu district to grow king of fruits

ABHINAV VERMA

Jammu, July 21: Taking advantage of centrally spon-sored National Horticultur-al Mission for North East-ern and Himalayan states, Jammu district in the state has developed as many as 186 mango orchards over and above the area already under mango plantation this year.

Talking to Greater Kash-mir, SK University of Agri-cultural Sciences and Tech-nology Jammu (SKUAST) expert, Dr Rajinder Pishan, said that they have devel-oped a total 186 orchard s across Jammu district to enhance income of the farm-ers especially in the case and crop failure.

He informed that the orchards have been devel-oped in different areas of Jammu district including Balwal, Dansal, Khor and Akhnoor. “The areas have been chosen for the activity as they lack adequate irriga-tion facilities,” he said.

He said the decades old mango orchards have also been rejuvenated in Akhnoor. “After 40 years the plants need a treatment and this is the regular pro-cess being done under the mission” he said.

He informed that only one variety of mango plants ‘Dussari’ were planted in all orchards as the center gov-ernment gives subsidy on this variety only.

He said that before devel-oping the orchards, the

SAKAUST-J conducted study at 50 such places includ-

ing 25 old orchards across Jammu and Samba districts.

Pertinently, according to some estimates Jammu has 10,700 hectares land under mango plantation which last year produced 12,000 MT fruit.

The National Horticulture Mission, a centrally spon-sored scheme was launched in 2005-06 to enhance horticul-ture production and improve nutritional security and provide income support to farm households and others through area-based region-ally differentiated strategies.

For the schemes under the Mission, the Government of India contributes 85 per-cent funds, while 15 percent contribution is made by the State Governments.
