Society News Last year was quite a momentous year one way or another. of hotels. It is also close to Harvey Nicks for those who haven’t been hit by the recession and a TK Max for those who have. The conference dinner will take place in University House which is a 10 minute walk away from the Museum. We decided at our last council meeting to try one conference a year. The attendance was down in Edinburgh and we are aware of the number of other competing meetings that are going on in the year. An annual meeting would be in line with other similarly sized Societies. We will have to see how this goes. Due to this reduction in number it was felt appropriate to extend the length of each meeting. Therefore, it will be held for a day and a half. On the Thursday we are combining forces with SEDENTEXCT which means that we will have internationally known speakers. The day will concentrate on cone beam CT and may also appeal to non members. On the Friday there will be the AGM, a speaker and members presentations followed by peer review so I plan for us to finish in the early afternoon to allow people to get home in good time for the weekend. I look forward to welcoming you all to Leeds. ECDMFR Istanbul June 2010 Volcanoes, strikes by British airlines and Middle East tensions did not prevent a good sized representation of BSDMFR travelling the 1500 miles to Istanbul for the European Congress of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. The conference venue was a hotel outside the centre of Istanbul and this made for lengthy journeys along very congested roads! There were a number of interesting keynote speakers including our own Jackie Brown who gave a very well illustrated talk on the use of ultrasound in the maxillofacial region and Eric Whaites who spoke on the medico-legal dilemmas in DMFR. Eric presented some of the difficulties he has encountered with such cases. Of the other keynote speakers, a particular highlight was Stu White who gave a very interesting presentation on radiation protection and the difficulties involved with calculating the risks of cancer induction at the doses encountered in DMFR In a change to the usual format, stormtroopers appeared and Jackie Brown donned a wig and gown to act as compere (dressed as Princess Leia) for the junior film reading session. This provided an opportunity for the large audience to participate in a quiz/case review session using a digi-vote system. Too many BSDMFR members to mention individually presented their work as poster and oral presentations during the congress and they were generally well received. As ever, the social events were an important part of the congress. The welcome ceremony at the Turkish Military

Museum involved a fascinating, and very lengthy talk about Turkish art and history by Professor Talat Sait Halman the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Turkish Literature and Dean of Humanities and Letters at Bilkent University . This was followed by a display of Whirling Dervishes and a well earned chance to sample some Turkish delicacies and rehydrate. A boat cruise along the Bosphorus gave an opportunity to get outdoors and take in the European and Asian sides of the river. An impromptu stop allowed the delegates and crew of the boat to watch Rhianna in concert. On the last evening, the congress dinner was held in the congress hotel and was quite unusual, as the guests were able to dance as the meal was served! Overall, this was a very successful Congress giving us the opportunity to mix work and play whilst sampling the great city of Istanbul. Donald Thomson Presidents past present and future?

Spot Princess Leia (above) I think there was more in the food than we bargained for!

Princess Leia is missing but we now have storm troopers and a Norwegian with “the force”

Autumn Scientific Meeting Edinburgh 2010

This meeting took place in September at Edinburgh Zoo. What a fantastic venue. The numbers were slightly down on usual but that did not detract from the meeting. The presentations were interesting and informative particularly that by Howard Moody about “naughty people”. As always on both days members case presentations stimulated a lot of thought and provoked debate. The reception and dinner on the Thursday night was very enjoyable with a novel way of identifying which tables at which we were to sit by animals, chocolate bars and biscuits!! On the Friday we were treated to 2 excellent talks by Bill Scarfe. It is difficult to keep the audience alert and entertained over 2-3 hours but it is a testament to Bills speaking abilities that he easily succeeded. Before heading home some of us took the opportunity to look round Edinburgh Zoo watch the penguins parade and buying knick knacks before hitting the long road home. Fiona Carmichael

Obituary DAVID SMITH Professor David Smith (1931-2010) was professionally best known as Head of the Department of Dental Radiology at King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1972-1996. But he had many other achievements: serving in the Merchant Navy (1948-1958); Master Mariner (1957); member of the Greater London Council and Inner London Education Authority (1977-1986); Open University Council member (1978-1991) and Civil Consultant to the RAF (1990-1996). He was a man with great foresight, communication skills and integrity who inspired countless students, many of whom became close friends. He graduated from King’s in 1964 then obtained an MSc in Radiation Physics and Radiation Biology in 1966. After working part-time in dental practice, in 1969 he obtained an MPhil in Radiation Biology and was appointed full-time Senior Lecturer in Dental Radiology at King’s; in 1978 he was promoted to Professor. David developed a one year internal MSc in Dental Radiology in 1975 and in 1990 pioneered the first clinical distance-learning MSc from the University of London, in Dental Radiology; about 150 students from over 40 countries have since been awarded

degrees. During the 1980s David was instrumental in setting up the Diploma in Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR); the RCR awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in 1997. He published widely, including Dental radiography and Simple navigation by the sun. After a hugely successful and influential career David ‘retired’ in 1996, but continued working to develop the distance-learning MClinDent in Prosthodontics at King’s. He was President of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology twice (1977/8 and 1985/6): he used his presidency to foster links with colleagues in Europe, and is acknowledged as one of the pioneers behind the formation of the European Academy of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology - founded in 2004. David is survived by his wife Mary, son Malcolm and daughter Clare. They know that David was held in very high regard by countless colleagues and will live on in our memories; his influence will last for generations.
