ResourcesStudent Handbook (bismarckstate.edu/students/resources/handbook/)The online student handbook provides access to information about services and resources for students as well as poli-cies and procedures. All students, online or on campus, are responsible for reading and knowing the contents of this online handbook.

Academic AdvisingAcademic advising is a collaborative educational process between the student and their advisor designed to support the student’s academic success. An academic advisor is assigned to each student enrolled at BSC. Depending upon your program of study, this advisor may be a member of faculty or professional staff. Students are able to find their academic advisor’s name, phone number and email address by logging into their Campus Connection Student Center.

Academic Support Services/Tutoring (Located between the Jack Science Center and Schafer Hall)Tutoring, assistance with learning and implementing effective study skills are services offered by the Academic Support Services. These services are free and available on a drop-in basis for students enrolled in BSC courses.

AUGUSTCampus Life

• The first six weeks of college are an exciting and challenging time for new students.

• Enthusiasm for starting college is typically high, but insecurities about fitting in, succeeding in college level courses, and navigating unfamiliar surroundings can be equally strong emotions.

• For students moving away from home for the first time, a feeling of homesickness may also be experienced.

Reminders• Attending one of the on-campus orientation sessions will provide familiarity with the campus and with available resources.

• Reflection on the new time commitment of study and class preparation is essential. This is the time to take an honest look at personal, work, and school commitments to determine if adjustments need to be made in order to have sufficient time to complete schoolwork and succeed in classes.

• Reviewing the Resource List in this calendar will give a clear overview of help available on campus.

➤ Refer to the bismarckstate.edu/deadlines page for a complete listing of dates and deadlines for the semester.

Understand payment deadlines• Tuition and fees are due the first day of class based on the date on the study list.

• All other charges are due at the time incurred (housing, fines, etc.).

• Holds for non-payment apply to student accounts when the account is 2 days past due.

• A 1.75% late fee is applied to any balance 30 days past due.

FERPAThe Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, also referred to as the Buckley Amendment, is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of education records, and the obligations of the institution regarding the release of educational records and the access provided to these records. Student educational records consid-ered confidential may not be released without the written consent of a student unless such action is covered by exceptions permitted by the Act.

SEPTEMBERCampus Life

• Opportunities for involvement in campus and group events will be promoted. Getting involved helps students integrate into college life.

• The difference between previous academic experience (such as high school) and the rigors of college is starting to become apparent. This may result in positive feelings of enjoying the challenge or negative feelings of inadequacy.

• Most courses are in full swing, but most large projects, papers, and tests are not immediately due.

• For students living away from home, roommate issues may have to be resolved. The Resident Director or counselor in the Mystic Advising and Counseling Center can help.

Reminders• The BSC email account should be checked at least once daily. Aside from campus notifications, instructors use BSC email to communicate important course information.

• Address, phone number, and other pertinent information should be updated in Campus Connection.

• FERPA prohibits faculty and staff from discussing student records with anyone other than the student. A FERPA waiver may be signed to allow designated individuals access to limited student information (such as finances).

• Checking time management skills at this early point in the semester is crucial to determine how effectively schoolwork is being balanced with other time commitments. The Sykes Student Success Center offers time management skills workshops that can reinforce or instill habits to promote academic success.

• Reinforcing support systems, such as trusted family, friends, or a counselor, will provide important avenues for sharing concerns and frustrations as they arise.

BSC E-MailThe BSC student email account is the official means of com-munication with the college. It is the student’s responsibility to log in to this email account and read messages frequently.

Study TimeGenerally, each hour of class will require at least two hours of study time. A three-credit class will therefore require about six hours of study time each week.

OCTOBERCampus Life

• The midterm of the semester occurs in October. Besides midterm exams, grades for papers and projects are returned.

• The realization of the demands of campus life, academic rigors, and personal or social commitment are becoming clearer.

• Midterms are a time for reflection:

• Are too many work, school, club, and other life commitments negatively impacting academic success?

• Is the student’s current approach to time management working or do adjustments need to be made?

Reminders• If grades are lower than anticipated, there is still time to be proactive in making positive changes. This is the time to:

➤ Make an appointment with instructors to discuss improving test, assignment, and overall course grades.

➤ Take advantage of available resources, such as the Sykes Student Success Center, the Mystic Advising and Counseling Center (MACC), and the Library.

MERIT PAGES (bismackstate.edu/merit)Bismarck State College uses Merit pages to publicize student achievements inside and outside of the classroom. Students receive recognition when they make the President’s Honor Roll, earn academic and athletic achievements, win awards in their area of study, attend a conference or academic competition, join a club and much more.

Every BSC student has their own BSC Merit page online that highlights their activities and accomplishments every semester at BSC. Find your student’s Merit page and follow it at bismarckstate.edu/merit. By following your student’s page, you will receive an email each time their Merit page is updated with a new achievement and you can share that good news directly to Facebook and Twitter.

NOVEMBERCampus Life

• The spring class schedule is available to view, and students begin planning their courses for the spring. Students contact their advisor to set up an appointment to help select classes.

• As the weather begins to change, students may find themselves sick with a cold or flu. A healthy lifestyle, including a healthy diet, seven to eight hours of sleep nightly, stress management or relaxation activities, and regular exercise will help prevent the onset of sickness. Students who have not taken advantage of their membership to the BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center can request a tour of the facilities and start an exercise program.

• Students who have procrastinated or engaged in poor time management may find stress and anxiety levels rise to new heights as the realization the term is almost over sets in.

Reminders• Each student is assigned an academic advisor who can help them select classes that will count toward graduation and/or the student’s major requirements. Setting up an advising appointment is easy. The advisor’s name, phone number, and email link are located on the right lower side of the Campus Connection homepage.

• Students must agree to the Student Financial Obligation Agreement every semester before they will be cleared to register. The student’s advisor can explain this process.

• Students who plan to complete a degree at the end of the term must complete an Application for Degree. Advisors or Academic Records staff can assist students with this process.

DROP/WITHDRAW FROM A CLASS This procedure allows a student to drop some courses (not all courses) based on term date and deadline regulations; how-ever, students will still maintain enrollment in some courses for the term. Several factors should be considered prior to withdrawing from a class or from college; therefore, it is recommended that students meet with an academic advisor before making this important decision.

WITHDRAWING TO ZERO CREDITSIf students are considering Withdrawing to Zero Credits, they are encouraged to contact an advisor prior to complet-ing the withdrawal. An advisor can help determine if withdrawing is appropriate, or if there are other options to allow the student to remain enrolled in all or some classes. This procedure allows students to withdraw to zero credits for the semester. Students withdrawing completely from college will not complete this process in Campus Connection, but instead must com-plete the Withdraw to Zero Credits form.

DECEMBERCampus Life

• Final exam week is scheduled differently than the regular semester class schedule. Students will need to verify with their instructor if they have a final exam scheduled during finals week. The schedule for finals week is available at bismarckstate.edu/academics/records/calendarsdeadlines/.

• Final course grades will be posted on Campus Connection by the end of this month.

Reminders• It is a good idea for students to check with professors to see if an exam with be given during finals week. If so, checking the final exam schedule will ensure there is no schedule overlap of any final exam times, which can occasionally happen. Discussing exam schedule conflicts with teachers well in advance of finals week is important.

• College finals and final course grades can create additional added stress and worry, and take a toll on the body and mind. It is crucial to focus on healthy eating, sleeping, and exercise habits to reduce stress levels, maximize energy, and avoid illness during this time.

• Checking the BSC email account during the holiday break is essential, especially at the end of the semester and after the new year.

Student Credit LoadFull-time students are enrolled in 12 or more credits. A part-time student is enrolled in at least six, but less than 12, credits. Students are limited to 20 credits per semester (12 credits in the summer). Keep in mind other responsibilities such as family, work and financial obligations before registering for classes.

Grade Point AverageGrade Point Average (GPA) is the single most important piece of information that transfer colleges and employers want to know. The GPA is the total of all honor points divided by the total of all credit hours. Honor Points are awarded as follows: A – 4 honor points per credit I – 0 honor points B – 3 honor points per credit S – 0 honor points C – 2 honor points per credit U – 0 honor points D – 1 honor point per credit W – 0 honor points F – 0 honor points AU – 0 honor points

Academic StandingBSC is committed to the academic success of every student. The college will monitor a student’s grades and issue an appropriate warning if grades are inadequate. The academic standing is determined after final grades have been posted in Campus Connection at the end of each term/semester. The college keeps students informed of their academic stand-ing by printing a statement on the student’s transcript as well as sending correspondence directly to the student.

• Good Academic Standing: Students who have a term and cumulative grade point average of 2.00 and higher. • Academic Warning: Students who have a term or cumulative grade point average below 2.00 • Academic Probation: Students who are on academic warning and fail to earn a cumulative grade point aver-

age of 2.00 or higher after finishing their next semester of enrollment. Students receiving a 2.00 or higher term grade point average will be allowed to remain on academic probation until they improve their cumulative grade point average to a 2.00 or higher.

• Academic Suspension: Students who are on academic probation and fail to earn a term grade point average of 2.00 or higher after finishing their next semester of enrollment are placed on academic suspension and will not be reinstated before a lapse of at least one semester.

Satisfactory Academic ProgressBSC, in compliance with federal regulations, established policies and procedures to ensure that students who receive financial aid are making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree, diploma, or certificate. Students who fail to meet these standards of satisfactory progress will not be eligible to receive federal financial assistance until eligibility has been re-established.

JANUARYCampus Life

• Students will be able to access their grades through Campus Connection. Whether the grades are cause for satisfaction or disappointment, students have now gained a better understanding of what college requires and can plan for the new semester accordingly.

• For students who feel satisfied with their success in the fall semester, the return to campus after winter break is the opportunity to re-commit to effective life-balance practices and time management strategies.

• For students who have decided they can do better than they did in the fall semester, January is the perfect time to determine what changes should be made in time management and in balancing school, work, and life commitments.

• As students learned in the previous semester, keeping up with coursework requires a firm personal commitment. Focusing on appropriately prioritizing school responsibilities starts during the first week of classes.

Reminders• A complete listing of dates and deadlines for the spring semester can be found at bismarckstate.edu/academics/records/calendarsdeadlines/.

Understand payment deadlines• Tuition and fees are due the first day of class based on the date on the study list.

• All other charges are due at the time incurred (housing, fines, etc.).

FEBRUARYCampus Life

• Checking time management skills at this early point in the semester is crucial to determine how effectively schoolwork is being balanced with other time commitments. The Sykes Student Success Center offers time management workshops that can reinforce or instill habits to promote academic success.

• The cold weather and/or lack of sunshine may result in too much time spent indoors. Staying inside too long may have adverse effects on the mental and physical well being of students during this month. Students may find themselves feeling anxious, tense, or depressed. Being stuck indoors may lead to frustrations with roommates as well.

Reminders• Seek out ways to actively enjoy the winter. Fun outdoor activities, such as sledding, ice skating, or even building a snowman can lift spirits and provide a healthy and enjoyable study break.

• Avoid neglecting exercise. Physical activity and exercise can help counter-balance the physical and mental effects of the short, cold days spent indoors. Both healthy eating and regular exercise can also help prevent the onset of colds and flus that spread quickly during this month.

MARCHCampus Life

• Midterm tests may be administered during the month of March. Also added to the workload of this month may be mid-semester papers and projects. Students who carefully plan in advance how to best approach projects, papers, and test preparation find their stress is lessened. Students who procrastinate or fail to set a good study plan will suffer consequences that include heightened stress levels, which can negatively impact both mental and physical well being.

• The summer schedule of classes is available, and students who plan to take a summer class or classes may begin registering.

• Students begin planning for summer by looking for a summer job or internship.

Reminders• Visit with your professors early in the month regarding your grades in the course. If need be, ask for help in understanding the material, setting up a study plan, or seeking out a tutor. The Sykes Student Success Center can provide tutoring guidance as well.

• If a course grade is below passing level, discuss whether withdrawing from the course is needed. Contact the instructor, your academic advisor, or an advisor in the MACC to discuss withdrawal considerations.

• Contact your academic advisor for help in deciding whether to take a summer class. During the advising appointment, your advisor can help you register for the summer class.

• The MACC can provide information about summer jobs and internships.

• Students who will complete their degree in the fall, spring, or summer are eligible to participate in the May commencement ceremony.
