Explore the power and limitations of market forces

BSc (Hons) Economics

Your programme of studyo In each of your first two years of study you

will focus on core theory, applied economics and quantitative techniques. This provides you with the key skills needed to be an economist. In your final year you will have the opportunity to specialise in areas that reflect the research interests of the academic staff of the department.

o In every year you will need to take modules worth 120 credits, some compulsory and some options. You will take 60 credits in your first semester starting in the autumn term and 60 in the second semester starting in the spring term.

Why study at Birmingham Business School? Economics is the study of problems that arise because resources are scarce. If there weren’t any scarce resources we would all be able to have as much of everything that we desired. Unfortunately we do not live in such a world and hence questions about resource allocation become paramount to understanding the way we live and how societies are organised.

As you progress through this programme you’ll begin to understand why prices go up and down, the reason for economic growth and how it’s related to individual well-being, why trading between economies can make everyone better off, and why policy-makers need to intervene to make sure that markets do not give undesirable solutions, such as polluting the environment or giving producers the opportunity to exploit market power.

This programme is an exciting chance to explore some of the increasingly prominent economics issues affecting 21st century political and current affairs. Economics is an intellectually challenging discipline that builds important skills and techniques in using maths and applying statistical data, as well as wider transferable skills, all of which will make you a highly sought-after graduate with a significant advantage in the employment market.

‘The fact that the Economics Department is in the Business School means that the modules are more geared towards the real business world compared to other universities.’

Make your mark on the international markets

BSc Economics with Language

Your programme of studyo As for the Economics programme, in each

of your first two years of study you will focus on core theory, applied economics and quantitative techniques, building the key skills needed to be an economist.

o Your third year is spent abroad at one of our partner universities depending on the language you have chosen. Your year abroad is conditional upon you achieving the requisite grades and number of credits in your first and second year.

Why study at Birmingham Business School? To study Economics you need to understand how economists think about problems, and that means studying theoretical models. But we also understand the importance of applying those theories to the problems that economists face, so this programme (and all other Economics-based programmes) also emphasises applied Economics, aiming to help you develop skills in statistics that you can use to analyse economic data and forecast what may happen in the future.

The knowledge of the economist and the skill of the linguist make a powerful combination in the modern world. With increasingly globalised and interdependent commercial markets, Economics graduates that can apply their skills and understanding overseas have never been more sought after, opening up exciting new horizons for a successful international career.

oIn your final year you will have the opportunity to specialise in areas that reflect the research interests of the academic staff of the department.

oIn every year you will need to take modules worth 120 credits, some compulsory and some options. You will take 60 credits in your first semester starting in the autumn term and 60 in the second semester starting in the spring term.

Could you predict the economic conditions to come?

BSc Mathematical Economics and Statistics

Your programme of studyo In your first two years you will undertake

courses in mathematics and statistics/ econometrics, giving you the foundation to study advanced topics in economic theory and practice, and read more widely in economics and other social sciences.

o The programme’s compulsory courses are designed to provide you with a firm grounding in the main principles and techniques, leaving you free to build on these in accordance with your interests via a wide range of optional modules.

oThe main elements of the programme are modules in mathematical modelling of economic problems and econometrics.

Why study at Birmingham Business School? This programme emphasises developments in modern economic and social theory and takes account of the growth of mathematical and statistical tools in the analysis of economic and social problems.

Many economic concepts are quantifiable. So it’s natural to construct models in terms of well-defined relationships between such variables, and to analyse the properties of these models by mathematical and statistical methods. Such analysis can throw much light on the realism of a model, but the adequacy of a model in describing phenomena can be tested more precisely by the explicit statistical measurement (with observed data) of the relationships implied by the model.

By tightly integrating the study of economics and statistics, this programme meets the increasing demand from industry, the professions and public bodies for informed and talented graduates who can apply skill and imagination to real-world problems. As a graduate you will emerge with an excellent, professional training in economics allied with advanced technical and quantitative skills that you can readily apply to a host of social science concepts and problems.

‘I chose the BSc Mathematical Economics and Statistics programme because I wanted to study on a programme that could be practically and realistically applied in the real world. I’m very happy I chose this programme because it was perfect for that.’

What is econometrics?Econometrics is an interdisciplinary field of study involving economics, statistics and mathematics, as well as the use of statistical software, that deals with applications ofmeasurement in economics. This doesn’t mean it’s solely concerned with measurement and data-gathering. These are merely the preliminaries to marrying abstract economic theory with real-world facts, with the aim of progressively refining economic theories in order to better explain economic reality.

This means that Econometricians are fundamentally involved in the testing of economic theories. But they also design ‘econometric models’, applying knowledge of past and present economic conditions in order to predict what will happen in the future. This makes the work of the econometrician indispensable for both the development of economic theory and the planning of economic policy.

‘The Economics course offers flexibility with a great choice of diverse modules in second and final year. I believe that studying a language has given an added dimension, and it is an enjoyable contrast to the economics side. I spent a wonderful year abroad in Valladolid, Spain and there was lots of support from the University to help me prepare. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Birmingham and I would highly recommend the University of Birmingham to any prospective student.’
