2010 SEASON REVIEW

SUMMING UP 2010

IN JUST A YEAR’S TIME Oregon improved its record from 14-42

in 2009 to 40-24 in 2010. The 22-game

improvement (diff erence in games won and

diff erence in games lost divided by two) is the

second-best recorded in the country since the

NCAA began keeping the stat in 1998. The only

team to better the mark was Florida Atlantic

which improved from 29-30 in 1998, to 54-9

in 1999.

THE NUMBERS ARE IMPRESSIVE The Ducks finished their season 9-6

against ranked opponents, and swept three

non-conference weekend series. Oregon also

fi nished 3-3 against No. 1 ranked teams, and

won fi ve Pac-10 series - including three (#22

Stanford, #1 UCLA and Washington) on the

road - during the 2010 season.

Away from home against ranked opponents,

UO accumulated a 7-4 mark.

GEORGE HORTON Oregon head coach George Horton made

his 12th appearance in the postseason after

taking the Ducks to the Norwich Regional

in just the second season since the program

was reinstated. Horton made 11 trips to the

playoff s in his 11 years at the helm of Cal

State Fullerton, and in his Division I head

coaching career has missed the postseason

only once - his fi rst year with UO in 2009.

Horton now has a 57-28 record in his 12

postseason appearances, advancing out

of the regional round on seven occasions,

and winning the 2004 College World Series

Championship.

The Ducks made massive improvements

under Horton’s watch; improving their batting

average from .227 to .292, improving a 5.07

ERA to 3.29, more than doubling its run total

from 158 to 376, and nearly doubling extra-

base hits from 84 to 164.

The Ducks, who fi nished 10th in the Pac-10

in 2009 and were predicted to do so again in

the preseason poll, tied for fi fth in the 2010

standings. The 40-24 record also marked the

eighth time in his 13 years at the Division I

level, that Horton reached a 40-win season.

All-Conference team. The southpaw fi nished the season

with a 7-5 record and 2.98 ERA (5th Pac-10). The Friday-

National Team Trials.

JUSTIN LATEMPA Justin LaTempa was named to the Norwich Regional

All-Tournament Team, and was then drafted by the Los

Angeles Angels in the 12th round of the 2010 Major League

Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

LaTempa fi nished his season with a 6-3 record on the

mound, a 3.65 ERA and 68 strikeouts while holding opposing

batters to a .252 average. He was named Pac-10 Pitcher

by the Oakland A’s, fi nished his senior year with a perfect

record of 9-0. He was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention,

and his nine wins tie an Oregon single-season record.

Boer led the staff with fi ve saves, claiming saves in UO’s

fi nal fi ve wins of the season. Boer fi nished his sophomore year

with a 3-1 record and 2.44 ERA. In his fi nal fi ve appearances

on the mound in save situations, Boer posted a 1.29 ERA

in seven innings of work, while completing all fi ve stops.

He dealt six strikeouts and walked no one, while allowing

just one earned run to cross the plate and leaving all fi ve

of his inherited runners stranded.

OFFENSIVE OVERHAUL After batting just .227 in 2009, Oregon’s off ense recovered

for a respectable showing in 2010. The Ducks batted .292

(6th Pac-10) on the year, and totaled 624 hits (4th Pac-10).

The Ducks fi nished third in the Pac-10 with 120 doubles,

and were aggressive on the base paths stealing 73 bases

(4th Pac-10).

led UO with a .419 on-base percentage, 81 hits, 111 total

bases and 14 stolen bases.

NOTES: Oregon made a valiant comeback, but defensive errors proved

too costly as the Ducks fell 11-7 to Pepperdine on Sunday at Eddy D.

Field Stadium. The Ducks trailed the Waves just 14-12 for hits on the

day, but UO committed fi ve errors to Pepperdine’s one. Pepperdine

dinged up Oregon freshman starter Christian Jones early putting three

runs on the board in the fi rst and another three in the second as Or-

egon’s defense also struggled committing three early errors.

Jones, a lefty, took the loss and lasted three and 1/3 innings, allow-

ing seven runs (only three earned) on eight hits and one walk, while

striking out two. Pepperdine’s Robert Dickmann, a lefty as well, held

the Ducks to three earned runs on eight hits, pitching seven innings in

the win and striking out three. Pepperdine freshman Joe Sever was a

perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a triple and four runs scored.

NOTES: Oregon proved on Monday afternoon why the club may be

worthy of its No. 25 ranking from Collegiate Baseball with a power-

ful off ensive showing in a 12-3 win over Loyola Marymount. The Ducks

totaled 12 runs on 11 hits, while limiting the Lions to three runs on

seven hits. Danny Pulfer led the way for Oregon with a 3-for-5 day,

four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior center fi elder Curtis Raulinaitis

was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jack Marder and

and KC Serna also had multiple hit games. Sophomore Scott McGough

made his second appearance of this opening weekend coming on to

get the fi nal out of the sixth in relief of starter Zack Thornton. In his

second UO career win, McGough pitched two and 1/3 innings, hold-

ing the Lions scoreless on one hit and one walk. Matt Florer took the

loss after surrendering the go-ahead run plus one without giving up

an out. He allowed two runs on one hit while facing just two batters. In

the start, LMU’s Gillingham pitched six innings and allowed three runs,

two earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out fi ve. Oregon

starter Zack Thornton lasted fi ve and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs

on six hits and one walk while striking out three.

NOTES: Oregon brought the rain to southern California and it worked

out nicely as the Ducks upset fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton 7-3...

In Horton’s return to Fullerton, he picked up his 265th win at Goodwin

Field, after a monster sixth inning and special performances on the

mound from starter Tyler Anderson and reliever Scott McGough...

the diff erence was a three-run inning in the sixth as freshman right

fi elder Jack Marder was issued a four-pitch walk from Cal State Ful-

lerton starter Daniel Renken to lead it off . Two batters later, freshman

fi rst baseman Ryan Hambright connected on a one-out single on

the hit-and-run to put runners on fi rst and third. Renken struck out

senior catcher Eddie Rodriguez for the second out of the inning, but

sophomore second baseman Danny Pulfer stood in and laced a two-

run double to deep right fi eld to score the go-ahead run. Anderson

pitched 5 and 2/3 innings on the mound surrendering three runs on

four hits on three walks while also striking out three on 87 pitches.

Scott McGough pitched the fi nal three and 1/3 innings for the save,

holding the Titans scoreless on three hits while dealing four strike-

outs.

NOTES: Oregon outhit Long Beach State 11-7, led by KC Serna’s 3-for-

4 performance while J.J. Altobelli, Jack Marder and Danny Pulfer also

had multiple-hit days in a 6-2 victory over Long Beach State. The

Ducks went ahead 5-1 after the top of the sixth as Oregon began to

knock around Long Beach State starter Andrew Gagnon. Ryan Ham-

bright was issued a one-out walk in the sixth, and moved to second

on a slow infi eld dribbler sent to the shortstop from Pulfer. With two

outs, Altobelli hammered a two-run double into right fi eld and ad-

vanced to third as Long Beach State’s defense tried to throw Pulfer out

at the plate. Curtis Raulinaitis then singled up the middle bringing

Altobelli home for the inning’s third run as the Ducks took a 5-2 lead.

Justin LaTempa, who was making his fi rst start in two years due to

injury went 4 and 2/3 innings on the mound, surrendering one un-

earned run. He allowed three hits but issued four walks and hit three

batters. Keudell came on to claim the win, pitching three and 1/3 in-

nings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two.

Oregon starter Tyler Anderson walked the leadoff batter, Breland Al-

madova, but looked to be out of danger after retiring the next two. He

struck out Kevin Macdonald for the third and fi nal out, but the ball got

past catcher Eddie Rodriguez to keep the inning alive as Macdonald

took fi rst on a passed ball. With runners at fi rst and third, Collin Ben-

nett’s infi eld single scored Almadova unearned for the game’s fi rst

run. Davis Freitas was then walked to load the bases, and a wild pitch

allowed Macdonald to score from third as Hawai’i took a 2-0 lead. The

‘Bows (2-3) added the third run of the inning when Bennett scored

on a J.J. Altobelli error. All three runs were unearned. Anderson (1-1)

took the loss after allowing four runs – only one earned – on four

hits in fi ve innings of action. The Las Vegas native struggled with

control, walking six batters, but striking out eight. Hawai’i added the

insurance run it would need in the fi fth when Jeff rey VanDoornum

hit a solo shot over the wall in right. Klein (1-0) pitched six innings

in the win and faced 26 batters, allowing three earned runs on seven

hits, two walks and one strikeout. Lenny Linksy tossed the eighth and

ninth innings, holding Oregon hitless and striking out three.

staff puzzled Oregon’s batters as the Ducks were limited to a season-

low four hits in a 2-1 Rainbows victory. The Ducks went into the top of

the ninth trailing 2-1, but things looked promising as freshman Ryan

Hambright singled off Hawai’i closer Lenny Linsky to lead off the in-

ning. Jett Hart came on to pinch run, and Eddie Rodriguez executed

the sacrifi ce bunt to move Hart into scoring position. But freshman

Steven Packard grounded out to third and Danny Pulfer sent one

right back to Linsky, who made the play to fi rst for his second save

of the series and season. Matt Sisto improved to 1-1 on the year,

pitching six innings and holding the Ducks to one run on three hits

and three walks. Alex Capaul pitched two innings of relief, holding

Oregon hitless and facing only one batter over the minimum, before

Linsky came on in the ninth for the save. LaTempa (0-1) took the loss

for Oregon tossing six innings, and allowing two runs on six and two

Oregon (4-4)...In the fourth, US starter Sam Spangler loaded the bas-

es again as a two-out UO rally was spurred by Shawn Peterson. The

Eugene native hit a single to right center, and Jett Hart kept things

going with a single through the left side. Spangler then struck KC Ser-

na to load the bases with two outs for Danny Pulfer. The two battled

to a full count, and Spangler off ered ball four to walk in Peterson for

a 1-0 lead. That ended Spangler’s night as right-hander Connor Little

was brought in for relief with the bases again loaded. On a 1-1 count,

Little struck Jack Marder to score Hart as Oregon took a 2-0 advan-

tage. Little’s fi rst off ering to Nick Wagner was a wild pitch, allowing

Serna to score from third. Little then regained his composure to strike

out Wagner, leaving Pulfer and Marder stranded. In the sixth Hawai’i

looked to threaten with two runners on, but Drew Gagnier came on in

relief of Oregon starter Zack Thornton, and struck out Collin Bennett

to record the third out of the inning as the ‘Bows left two on. Thornton

picked up his fi rst win of the season tossing 5 and 1/3 innings and

holding Hawai’i scoreless on two hits and two walks while striking out

fi ve. Spangler (0-2) took the loss for UH after allowing three runs on

fi ve hits and two walks in three and 2/3 innings of work.

Arizona State needed to remain undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Or-

(4-3) threw the fi rst complete game of his career and held the No. 1

Sun Devils (24-0, 4-0) to one run on four hits. The left-hander fanned

With one out on the scoreboard, Maggi took Anderson’s 1-1 off ering

be the diff erence for the fi nal seven innings. Arizona State starter Seth

Blair improved to 5-0, tossing seven shutout innings and striking out

Arizona State’s loss was its fi rst of the season as relief pitcher Brady

Rogers came on in the 12th and surrendered a bunt single to Altobelli,

who moved to second on a throwing error from Riccio Torrez at third

base. Rogers then retired Jett Hart and KC Serna, but Piazzisi fi nished

his night 3-for-5 with his walk-off RBI single. Piazzisi had two RBIs on

the night and was also walked twice. For Altobelli, the freshman third

baseman was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Oregon right-

hander Zack Thornton was the sixth pitcher to see the mound for the

Ducks, but the senior tossed three shutout innings, issuing only two

walks while not surrendering a hit and striking out four, improving to

4-0 on the season.

again defensively committing three errors, but it was ASU starter Jake

NOTES: Oregon pulled off the upset for the second week in a row as

the Ducks opened up their series with No. 22 Stanford, knocking off

the Cardinal 5-2 at Sunken Diamond. Another outstanding outing from

left-hander Tyler Anderson set up Oregon’s series-opening victory. The

Las Vegas native tossed fi ve and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs – only

one earned – on fi ve hits and three walks while fanning four. Sopho-

more Scott McGough came on and fi nished what Anderson started,

holding Stanford scoreless for the fi nal 3 and 1/3 innings and earning

his third save of the season while saving the bullpen for the fi nal two

games of the series. The victory marked the fi rst time since 1961, Oregon

KC Serna fi nished his day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Pulfer was

allow eight runs on fi ve hits, three walks and two errors. It was quite the

of pitching a complete game when he was relieved in the ninth after

putting Eddie Rodriguez on with a hit-by-pitch and surrendering a single

to J.J. Altobelli. Mooneyham puzzled the Ducks for eight innings prior,

holding UO scoreless on four hits and striking out seven during his fi rst

eight innings on the mound as Stanford took a 2-0 lead into the ninth.

With runners on fi rst and second for Oregon, the Cardinal made the

change to freshman righty Dean McArdle, and the rookie surrendered

a sacrifi ce bunt to Jack Marder to move the runners over to third and

second, and intentionally walked Curtis Raulinaitis to load the bases

but Steven Packard recovered from an 0-2 count as McArdle walked

the freshman, scoring Rodriguez. KC Serna then popped up to second

base to end the game as Stanford salvaged a 2-1 victory and avoided

the sweep. For McArdle, it was the fi rst save of his collegiate career.

Mooneyham ended his day allowing one run on fi ve hits and fi ve

NOTES: Washington State scored three runs in the fi nal two innings

to claim a 3-2 comeback victory over No. 17 Oregon on Friday night

at PK Park. The Ducks had a 2-0 lead going into the eighth as starter

Tyler Anderson had thrown seven innings of scoreless baseball. As the

lefty’s pitch count climbed into triple digits, Washington State’s Garry

Kuykendall started the rally with a one-out double to right center.

Matt Fanelli then cut UO’s lead to 2-1, driving a RBI triple off the wall

in right center. With Fanelli representing the tying run sitting just 90

feet away at third, the coaching staff elected to keep Anderson on the

mound. The lefty then surrendered the game-tying run as Michael

Weber dropped a RBI single into shallow right allowing Fanelli to

score. With McGough on the mound in the top of the ninth, Matt Ar-

gyropoulos placed a bunt down the third base line that Oregon third

baseman J.J. Altobelli bare-handed. The freshman’s throw was wide

of fi rst, allowing Argyropoulos to make his way to second. Shea Vu-

cinich then grounded out to move Argyropoulos to third, leaving the

go-ahead run at third with just one out on the board. Pinch-hitting,

Patrick Claussen’s sacrifi ce fl y to left brought Argyropoulos home un-

earned before Bartlett was retired as the Ducks went into the bottom

of the ninth trailing 3-2. Paris Shewey (5-1) was credited with the

win for the Cougars after pitching one inning of scoreless baseball

in the eighth. Starter Chad Arnold went a full seven innings, allow-

thrown by an Oregon pitcher since the program was reinstated, and was

also the second complete game tossed this season, as Tyler Anderson

threw nine innings of one-run baseball back on April 1 in a loss to No.

1 Arizona State. LaTempa threw seven innings of no-hit baseball until

WSU’s Matt Argyroppulos led off the eighth with a shallow double to

right that fell just a few feet fair of the right fi eld line. In his outing, La-

Tempa allowed just one hit, issued only one walk and hit one batter. The

but as shortstop KC Serna attempted to turn the double play, Oregon

McGough had pitched two scoreless innings and put UO in position for

the win as the Ducks were just three outs away. But the Huskies staged

NOTES: Madison Boer protected No. 21 Oregon’s one-run lead late,

and Eddie Rodriguez launched his team-leading seventh home run

of the season as the Ducks ended the 2010 regular season with a 6-5

victory over California. Oregon trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom

of the fi fth, but Eddie Rodriguez erased that defi cit with one swing

of the bat. J.J. Altobelli’s two-out single through the left side got the

rally started and Jack Marder’s two-out double to left put runners on

second and third for Rodriguez. In his last game at PK Park, Rodriguez

drove Chris Petrini’s fi rst pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left center

to tie the game at 5-5, and record his team-leading seventh home run.

It was also Rodriguez’s fi rst and only hit of the three-game series with

Cal. Oregon then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Danny

Pulfer singled off Cal reliever Erik Johnson. Danny Pulfer moved to

second on a sacrifi ce bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch be-

fore Steven Packard’s pinch-hit, RBI single to left put the Ducks ahead

6-5 for their fi rst lead of the series. In the top of the eighth, Oregon

brought Boer out of the bullpen to do a little clean-up work for Scott

McGough. With Chadd Krist at fi rst and one out on the board, a passed

ball moved Krist – the tying run – over to second. Chad Bunting then

put a slow rolling infi eld single in play that didn’t allow KC Serna with

enough time to make the throw to fi rst. With runners on the corners

and only one out, Boer recovered to strike out Danny Oh looking before

coaxing a ground out of Marcus Semien. In the ninth, an error on a

throw from Serna put the tying run on fi rst with no outs. But Boer

recovered to retire the side, including a highlight-reel throw from

Serna for the fi rst out of the inning. For Boer it was his third save of the

year. Johnson (6-3) took the loss for the Golden Bears after pitching

the ninth tied at 2-2, but the Ducks put the off ensive pressure on the

Huskies defense and scored three runs in the top of the inning. Oregon’s

Scott McGough (5-2) was credited with the win after holding UConn

scoreless on one hit for two innings, setting the table for Boer to come

in the ninth. Scott Oberg (5-2) took the loss for UConn after allowing

three runs (two earned) on two hits in one and 1/3 innings on the

mound. Connecticut starter Greg Nappo kept Oregon guessing most

of the night, allowing just two runs on four hits and one walk while

in hits, but the Ducks stranded nine runners on the bases and hit into

three double plays. Florida State’s Sean Gilmartin improved to 8-7 on

the season, after holding the Ducks to three runs on 10 hits and one

NOTES: Freshman Andrew Mendenhall made a game-saving catch, and

right-hander Madison Boer came out of the bullpen to hold the game-

tying run at second as the Ducks avoided elimination with a 4-3 victory

over 17th-ranked Connecticut. UConn’s Pierre LePage then drove what

would-have been a three-run homer to left, but Mendenhall climbed the

wall and made a highlight-reel catch, saving Oregon’s lead and postsea-

son hopes. Billy Ferriter ended up scoring unearned on a sacrifi ce fl y as

the Huskies closed 4-3. The Ducks then brought Boer into the game, and

he coaxed a fl y out from Nick Ahmed for the second out of the top of the

ninth. Boer then struck out George Springer for the game’s third out as

the Ducks lived to play another game. For Boer, it was his team-leading

fi fth save of the season. Oregon senior Justin LaTempa (6-3) put the Ducks

in position for the win after throwing six innings, and allowing two runs
