The European Union¶s Role in Securing Success in a Globalizing Market

Our world is currently characterized by a globalizing world market, intertwined

economies, and as a result, constant political strife. Meanwhile, many are wondering

what this process of globalization will bring about. Is it a race to the top or to the

 bottom? And more importantly, what can international organizations and governments

such as the European Union do to yield the most abundant results overall. It is clear that

if the world continues its current path during globalization, many countries will be left

 behind, and I believe it is in every nation¶s best interest to reverse this trend. The

European Union is the first legitimate attempt at an international government, and I will

use what it has done so far in eliminating poverty, reducing inequality, and raising the

income level to examine if it has helped its member nations reach their economic

 potential. This will provide good information as to what these international governing

 bodies should do in order to create economic success abroad.

My goal is not to suggest how to completely eliminate inequality or poverty. That

simply will not happen and no policy can achieve these results. What seems possible

though is helping developing countries engender prosperous economies without hurting

any other nation¶s wealth or GDP. By looking at the European Union, I will first

consider whether this organization has been helpful at all, but then suggest a general plan

of action to help achieve the goals spoken of earlier. Using as recent sources as I can find

in the fields of economics, political economics, and socio-economics, I will analyze the

European Union¶s success from several different scholarly disciplines with a focus on

socio-economics. As we too find ourselves in a slowed economy, it is imperative that we

understand what the correct steps to success are for our future. I will take an honest look 

at what the European Union has done so far and what they are currently doing to provide

insight as to how to make the globalization of the world market a race to the top.
