BombingScience: A quick introduction- What
do you write ? Im Bonzai. BombingScience:
Where are you rom and whats the scene like
where you live?
Bonzai: Im originally rom the south coast o
the UK but have lived and worked in London or
quite a ew years now.
The scene here in London is pretty big, like any
major city. I think there was a bit o a dip in
activity or a while but it seems to be picking up
again.
BombingScience: What was your introductionto the world o Grati?
Bonzai: I got into grati with the rst wave o
hip hop that hit the UK. I started seeing grati
more and more at that stage, I didnt care
who done it I just wanted to see more o it. It
wasnt until a couple o years later when I was
around 14/15 that I picked up a can. For me
something just seemed to click! I know its been
said a thousand times over, but when I rst saw
Subway Art it just conrmed everything or me.
BombingScience: deal painting experience?
Bonzai: For me it would have to be a long
weekend with all expenses paid in a nice hot
country.
BombingScience: Tough question I know but
who are some o your avourite artists- grati
and otherwise?
Bonzai: Yeah, this is a tough one as there is so
much talent out there and you just keep nding
more and more
Right now Im really eeling Smug, Dead, Epok,Kak, Lovepusher, Aroe and HA Crew, Aryz, Soes,
Askew, MSK, Solo One, Sobekcis, LoveLetters,
DMV. This list could go on or ages, but I really
think the ones to watch out or and are at the
top o my list right now are the Ghetto Farceur
guys.
BombingScience: Are there any particular
goals youd like to achieve in your grati
career?

Bonzai: Over the past ew years I have set
mysel goals at the beginning o each year,
last year was to paint a new style and do as
much as possible. This year I want to try and
paint in as many cities in the UK as I can.
But my main goal is to push mysel as ar as I
can. For me, especially over the past couple
o years I have just wanted to challenge
mysel. Im never 100% happy with my work
once its nished and I can always see major
aults in it. As soon as Ive nished a piece and
look at the photos I always want to go straight
back out and better it.
BombingScience: What is your opinion on
the current state o grati, both locally and
internationally?
Bonzai: I think Grati is in a good place right
now, best it has been in some time. There are
always going to be good things and bad
things in the scene. I try and ignore all the
bullshit that goes on and concentrate on
where Im at.
BombingScience: Do you preer to paint
letters or characters?
Bonzai: Im really enjoying painting letters
right now, but I do like to sneak the odd
character into my pieces rom time to time.
I enjoy painting characters but there are so
many great character writers out there and
that is why I wouldnt try and make characters
my main thing.
BombingScience: Do you inject any narrative
into your work? For example, the way thatLovepusher or Solo One implement thematic
ideas into their work that they eel are
important...
Bonzai: Not really, but I think its great what
they do, I also think its really important to be
yoursel when you paint and i that means
sending out a message that you strongly
believe in, then go or i t. Also, dont be
deterred by what others think because the
moment you start to worry about that and not
do what is in your heart it will aect your work.
Me, I just try and give my work as much visual
impact as I can.
BombingScience: What are your strongest
inuences outside o grati and do they in
turn inuence your work? I mean stu like
this is amazing- http://vimeo.com/17943433 ,
really inspiring, and the Ghetto Farceur stu,
which Id never seen beore... Any other gems
such as this?
Bonzai: I get inuences or lls rom loadso things, nature plays a big part, whether it
be the bark o a tree, a pattern on a stone
ect, ect. I try and photograph as many things
I see as possible these days and document
the photos so I can reer back to them when
Im painting. Also the internet is a great place
to nd inuence/reerence, say or instance
I want to paint a strange pattern, you dont
have to be a proessional photographer to
get it, you just type in what you want and
there it is. But yeah, the Paradox video is
antastic and I still want to do another piece
inuenced by itwhen the weather gets better
and I can put in the hours, as I dont eel I did
it justice last time.
BombingScience: You seem to have travelled
to and painted in many places- is there
anywhere in particular whose scene has
blown you away? Any particularly memorable
incidents?
Bonzai: Im lucky to be able to get about a bit,
last year was about developing a style, so Ididnt get out o London to much, but this year
Im planning to get out and do as much as
possible in dierent places. Amsterdam in 91
was pretty dope but or me the French scene
has to be the one that really stands out. I rst
went to Paris in 1990 and the scene there was
crazy. I think the French have a natural artistic
are, and it seems to be encouraged. It was
people like Skki and Lokiss that really caught
my attention in the way they were not scared
to try something dierent, there work looked to

me like it was rom the uture. Also the Mode2
walls out there were crazy.
BombingScience: Any upcoming gallery
shows? How do you eel about painting
canvas as opposed to concrete? Also, where
can we see some gallery work?
Bonzai: I used to nd canvases hard in terms
o not really knowing what to put on them;
I was struggling to squash everything into asmall space. Recently I have become more
relaxed painting them and just treat it as I
would when I paint a wall. Im working on
a ew at the moment and will continue to
produce them throughout the year; they will
be available on my site (www.bonzaione.
com) soon. As or up coming shows, I am
working on getting a show together in Ireland
towards the end o the year.
BombingScience: Have you worked any
particularly rewarding commissions?
Bonzai: I guess the most rewarding
commission or me was spending a week
painting the Breaking Convention at Sadlers
Wells a ew years back with Nash and Tumki
(LoveLetters) and Blade. Painting a wall with
Blade was pretty big! But main thing rom that
week was the chance to paint with and learn
rom Nash, it was a really big turning point or
me.
BombingScience: What uture plans do youhave or your work?
Bonzai: Push mysel as ar as I can.
Any shouts Thanks to you guys at
bombingScience or interviewing me. Shouts
to everyone I know, you all know who you are.
Peace. For updates on Bonzai please check

Bombing Science: So a quick introduction
What do you write and what crew(s) do you
rep?
Cast: Hey, I write cast and soweto. Crews I
represent are Pirates and CPK.
Bombing Science: Where are you rom and
whats the scene like where you live?
Cast: I was born and raised in South Arica but
Ive been living in Wellington New Zealand
or almost 3 years now. In my opinion - NZ has
some o the best writers in the world, but theWellington scene is total horse shit. Everybody
hates on every body. You get hated on or
having a dierent style. You get hated on
or succeeding and thereor progression is
very slow. I think its because o the small city
everybody is ghting or space but nobody
is pushing themselves to progress. You see
assholes do the same shitty tags and throwies
or years.
Bombing Science: What other writers are
involved in Pirates and CPK?
Cast: editor, quews, pntr, yelz, bros, whi sky,
eeks, vinyl, nektar, drypnz... a rather diverse
group o people.
Bombing Science: What was your introduction
to Grati?
Cast: It started way back in high school when
me and some mates would skip school to
hang out in a little shed we called the keg.
We would smoke bongs and draw or hours...
dont reallly remember who started doin lettersand such but soon afer that i started taking
a can with on my morning newspaper run.
We used to uck around trying to do pieces
with local hardwarestore paint... no outside
inuences and no internet. Its only afer living
in NZ that i realised the possibilities.
Bombing Science: What does a typical days
painting involve?
Cast: This is how it usually pans out - wake up

extremely hungover. Meet up with whoever
is keen and head into town searching or
background roller paint, which usually turns
out to be some poo brown. We then head
down to the trendy skateshop where we select
our three ironlaks out o a range o about 10
colours. Awesome, at this point, still searching
or a wall, you can start thinking about your
colour scheme or the day. Wall searching
takes about 3 hours and still ends in rustration
so we head to the only wall where we can
paint and drink beer in peace. Get drunk.
paint. Hit the town and do shit u regret the nextday....oh yea...then upload on i ckr.
Bombing Science: Favourite artists?
Cast: My brother - Editor, RTR crew, kem5 & ges,
40HK crew, disk and sure... and heaps more
including DEVO
Bombing Science: Do you preer to paint
letters or characters?
Cast: I get bored o letters then i paint
characters. I usually dont have enough cans
to do characters... or pieces.
Bombing Science: What is your opinion on
the current state o grati, both locally and
internationally?
Cast: In NZ- Wellington is shit, every kid with
a sharpie thinks hes cope2. Auckland and
Christchurch is awesome, so many good
diverse writers. Internationally? alot o weird
shit happening...people getn sponsored,
signature cans, inter net boom, trendy, trendy.
Bombing Science: Speaking o sponsorship,
signature cans etc... What is your opinion on
gra as a proession? A lot o people hate
on that, and I can understand to a degree,
but equally any opportunity to make money
doing what you love, or me, itd be a waste
not to pounce on that...
Cast: I dont mind aye, making money while
doing what you love cant be hated on. Give
credit where credit is due and too each his
own.
Bombing Science: How would you compare
the scene in SA as opposed to NZ? (it surprises
me that the wellington scene is weak, I guess I
just base that rom meeting quite a ew great
dudes rom there, doesnt translate to a strong
scene though)
Cast: I havnt been to SA in about 4 years but
what ive seen on the net its getting pretty
intense, heaps o awesome styles. Guys likeToe, Disk, Cros, Sure and heaps more...really
killing it at the moment. Its way bigger though,
way more room to play in. But with the new
by-law (making legal walls dicult to paint)
people are surely just gonna bomb more
i suppose.. Bigger train system, but always
bigger risk o getting shot at or something
dumb like that... A good ew years ago the
classic style in cape town was way more wild-
style orientated, but these days the styles have
simplied and become way more bold. Dare i
say ... unky.
I dislike the current scene in wellington but
the scene constantly changes with people
coming and going. No doubt heaps o good
dudes - BML!
Bombing Science: You mention strong scenes
in Auckland and Christchurch- any writers in
particular that stand out or you?
Cast: I always been a an o 2tone, Dues, Exist
rom Auckland. All o DTR rom Christchurch or
their awesome productions and denitely Zesor all the reights he smashes.
Bombing Science: Do the NZ authorities take a
hard-line approach to gra?
Cast: Yeah i think its getting tougher
everywhere. vandals are more hated on
than parkingmeter attedants.
Last Words? check out www.deadbeatmeat.
