Foreword

This document (EN 12635:2002+A1:2008) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 33 "Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling", the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by May 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by December 2009.

This document includes Amendment 1, approved by CEN on 2008-10-23.

This document supersedes EN 12635:2002.

The start and finish of text introduced or altered by amendment is indicated in the text by tags ! ".

!This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EC Directive(s).

For relationship with EC Directive(s), see informative Annexes ZA and ZB, which are integral parts of this document."

This standard is part of a series of European Standards for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates.

Annexes A and B are normative. Annexes C and D are informative.

!Annex ZA is applicable until December 28th, 2009 and Annex ZB is applicable from December 29th, 2009."

According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

0 Introduction

This European product related standard has been prepared to meet the needs of manufacturers, users and safety enforcement authorities, with the primary purpose of providing information for installation and use, including maintenance, of industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates used by vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

This standard is a type C standard as specified in EN 1070.

Only correct installation and maintenance performed by a competent organisation or person in conformity with the instructions can ensure the safe and intended functioning operations of an installation.

With the aim of clarifying the intention of the standard, the following market situations were considered when compiling this standard:

a) when the installation is carried out by the manufacturer of the door (by his own personnel) or under his responsibility (via professional subcontractor), the product is usually considered to be put on the market after installation. The installation requirements of this European Standard may be useful to draw up internal or contractual documents.

b) when the installation of doors put on the market under the form of complete kits is carried out by the user or by his appointed installer, this standard may be used to prepare the hand books to be supplied with the kit.

c) when installation is of power operated doors consisting in the combination of separately sourced components, the installer is the manufacturer of the machinery which is usually considered to be put on the market after installation. The information from the different sources needs to be compiled:

- for the compatibility of the components and for their installation;

- and to provide the information for safe use and maintenance to the end user.

This European Standard may be used to draft the information for use and maintenance. This European Standard may also be used to draft the information to be provided with the component(s) used for the upgrading of existing doors (e.g. manually operated doors upgraded to power operation).

With the aim of clarifying the intention of this European Standard and avoiding doubt when reading it, it was assumed when producing it that negotiation occurred between the manufacturer and the professional installer concerning the language.

1 Scope

1.1 General

This European Standard specifies the information to be provided by the door manufacturer and the components manufacturer to ensure safe installation, operation, use (including maintenance and repair) of doors, gates and barriers intended for installation in areas in the reach of persons, and for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises.

This European Standard also covers commercial doors such as rolling shutters and rolling grilles used in retail premises which are mainly provided for the access of persons rather than vehicles or goods.

This European Standard applies to manually operated and power operated doors, to doors and components intended to be installed by “non professional installers” and may also apply to the installation and use of upgrading component(s).

The European Standard only applies to the doors and components manufactured after the date of publication.

1.2 Exclusions

This European Standard does not apply to doors that are intended for a different use than the one described in 1.1 such as:

- lock gates and dock gates;

- doors on lifts;

- doors on vehicles;

- doors mainly for the retention of animals;

- theatre textile curtains;

- railway barriers;

- barriers used solely for vehicles. This European Standard does not apply to machinery other than power operated doors.

This European Standard does not cover operation in environments where the electromagnetic disturbances are outside the range of those specified in EN 61000-6-2 or for domestic garage doors those specified in EN 55014-2.

This European Standard does not cover:

- products to be used in potential explosive atmosphere or on armoured doors;

- programmable devices (see IEC 61508 series);

This documentation shall be clearly marked as being intended for the owner of the door.

Information intended solely for the use of specialists (i.e. installers, service installers, electricians etc.) shall be clearly marked and shall not be included in the documentation which is to be handed over to the owner.

5.4 Operation and use

The documentation shall include the duties and conditions under which the complete door or its individual component(s) is/are intended to be used, in particular with regard to:

– correct methods for operating the door;

– operating conditions: e.g. operating hours per day, automatic/manual operation; indication of the operating mode(s);

– explanation of the warning signs of the door;

– where appropriate, information about the safe use of manual emergency and/or manual release;

– range of intended environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, relative humidity, electromagnetic fields, and when applicable, warning against use in windy conditions);

– restrictions of use (see e.g. clause 1).

Details of safety functions, list and location of safety devices shall also be provided.

The documentation shall also contain information on prohibited use such as:

- lifting of material and/or persons;

- dashing through a closing door.

b) instructions for maintenance which can be undertaken by persons with basic product technical competence;

c) advanced maintenance procedures to be undertaken only by competent personnel;

d) maintenance operations for which advice of the manufacturer should be asked for because of safety reasons.

The maintenance instructions shall clearly indicate critical items and critical interventions which could prove hazardous.

The manufacturer shall specify the various levels of maintenance and inspection required (including operational safety checks) and the frequency at which they shall apply. Routine replacement of components necessary to achieve the durability classification of the product together with the applicable fault level and related discard criteria shall be clearly stated.

The instructions delivered with the product shall be pertinent to that specific individual product. Where the instructions cover multiple products or options, the particular details shall be clearly identifiable for the owner in order to prevent errors during maintenance operations.

The maintenance instructions shall inform the owner about the importance of recording any maintenance operation.

5.6 Dismantling

The instructions shall include guidelines for the safe dismantling of the door.

5.7 Change or upgrading

All requirements of this European Standard apply to the upgrading component(s).

Any subsequent change or upgrading of a door following hand over shall only be completed if the resultant modified door will permit compliance with all the relevant standards listed in prEN 13241-1:2001.

The organisation which is to carry out the changes or upgrading shall consider if any new hazard will be created. It shall also ensure subsequent safe operation and compile a modification/conversion technical file in accordance with annex C.
