Groups of Bryophytes• Bryophytes are nonvascular

plants• No vascular tissue• Doesn’t contain specialized

tissues that make water and nutrients

• Mosses: most common bryophytes, tolerates harsh environments, and can vary in looks

• Liverworts: leaves that are attached to the ground, produced in gemmae cups

• Hornworts: found in damp places, a tiny green horn is how it looks This is a picture of Hornworts.

Life Cycle of Bryophytes• Sporophytes

make haploid spores, then grow at the top of the gametophyte plant.

• Once the spores are ripe they come out of the capsule.

Life Cycle of a Moss

• A moss spore lands in a wet spot

• It germinates and it grows into a big tangle of protonema.

• Protonema grows and forms rhizoids

• Shoots grow into the air.

• Shoots grow into green moss plants.

Human Use of Mosses

• Peat moss is used in gardening

• Peat moss is added to soil to improve the soil’s ability to keep in water

• Peat moss has low pH, so when it’s added to soil it makes the soil’s acidity increase This is a picture of peat mosses.
