Thank You!!!
Happy New Year!
Bryant students will be taking their Winter
FAST reading assessments January 14-25. This
year at Bryant our building reading goal is to raise
student achievement by 10% on our Fall to Spring
testing. Every classroom is working on research-
based interventions to improve reading fluency.
One of the ways that parents can help support this
goal is to have your child read every night at
home. Thank you in advance for your support.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled
for February 25-26, 2019 (Interpreter Supported
Conferences are on Wednesday, March 6, 2019)
This will be a great time for your to visit with your
child’s teacher regarding specific skills that you
can work on to increase your child’s reading
proficiency.

Thank you to everyone who donated items for the Bryant Giving Tree. We donated the food items to the Siouxland Food Bank and the hats and mittens will remain in our building to help keep our students warm.

HEALTH NEWS By Julie Johnson, RN
Soap and Water or Alcohol-Based Sanitizers for hands?
Both alcohol-based hand sanitizers and hand-washing are effective ways of preventing disease, but remember these important facts:
Hand sanitizers are not as effective when dirt is visible on hands. Hand washing with soap and water, singing the “Happy Birthday” song, should be used to remove the oil and grime where bacteria can live.
Hand sanitizers should not be used in place of soap and water:
when preparing food
after restroom use
changing diapers
Hand sanitizers will not work in killing certain viruses or bacteria such as:
Cryptosporidium - causes diarrhea.
Norovirus – causes stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up.
Clostridium difficile – causes watery diarrhea.
Clean hands are one of the best ways to prevent infection or disease. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/handwashing/

PTO EVENTS
NEWS
Happy Holidays from the third grade team! A lot of exciting learning has been happening in our classrooms over the past few months and there is a lot to look forward to in the New Year. We most recently concluded a social studies unit about the first Thanksgiving. Students learned about the pilgrim journey to America and the establishment of Plymouth. We wrapped up the unit by welcoming parents into our classrooms for a presentation of reader’s theaters, followed by our Thanksgiving feast later that week. We were so happy to share this tradition with our Bryant students. Thank you for your support. In math, we have begun mastering our basic multiplication facts and strategies to solve multiplication problems. Students recently tackled the Distributive Property of Multiplication! We encourage you to continue working at home with your child to help them become fluent on the basic facts (addition, subtraction, and multiplication). In January, we will dive into division. In reading, we continue to work on our Must do/May do Menus weekly and meet with our skills-based, small groups. The students have been working on making inferences and identifying the meaning of unknown words or phrases. Our latest learning has been about “idioms”, such as “it’s raining cats and dogs” or “hit the hay”. Building-wide, we continue to work on fluency to prepare for the FAST CBM assessment in January. The third grade goal is to proficiently read 116 words per minute with no errors. Thank you for encouraging your children to read at home.
Dream big, work hard! At Bryant, anything is “PAW”sible!
From your third grade teachers
