As I reviewed my notes, memories of Dr. Reid’s class came rushing back. In bold, red leers in the margin on my notes referring to chapter eleven I wrote, "Great sermon material." The verse I was referring to was the first verse which says "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." What caught my aention over 35 years ago, and what catches my aention even more today, is that the writer of the Book of Hebrews understood that faith cannot be contained to a dictionary definition, a textbook, a sermon or a worship service. That faith in the risen Christ is a total commitment of all we are and all we hope to be. That we are anchored in the Triune, who created us, redeems us and sustains us. In the Book of Hebrews, (The book was wrien to Jewish Christians, probably as a sermon) is a wonderful litany of Old Testament figures who exhibited their faith without experiencing the totality of God’s redeeming grace. As Christians we have the assurance of Jesus Christ and the conviction of his life, death and resurrection. Yet, we like the people of the Old Testament, must seek hope and have assurance in the mist of the darkness. It is not hard to see and feel darkness in our world, especially in the immediacy of our modern media. Because we human beings want facts, details, and clarity. We struggle when our world is not painted black and white, but gray! The truth is, life is mostly gray. This is why we need to embrace these sacred words from Hebrews, to remind ourselves in the midst of the gray that faith will give us the assurance to get through discouraging times and trust that we will see with clarity God’s grace and love. There is a story of a clergyman who wrote a manuscript which was rejected by every publisher. Finally he gave up and threw it in the wastepaper basket. His wife remained faithful even when he gave up. He told her not to remove the manuscript from the basket. The next day she decided to take the manuscript to one more publisher. She entered the office with a large brown bag. The publisher was intrigued! The wife took out of the large, brown bag the wastepaper basket with the manuscript still in it and said that she would not go against her husband’s wishes, but believed it needed to be read! The book was Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking. We all get discouraged, even Dr. Norman Vincent Peale! However, because of Christ’s resurrection we can have assurance and hope that Christ is with us, even when we can’t feel or see him. RECTOR'S REMARKS | THE REV. RON ABRAMS

WHAT IS FAITH?Recently I came across some old seminary class notes. One of the course notes was from a course entitled The Book of Hebrews. As I reviewed my notes, memories of Dr. Reid’s class came rushing back. In bold, red letters in the margin on my

notes referring to chapter eleven I wrote, "Great sermon material." The verse I was referring to was the first verse which says "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

What caught my attention over 35 years ago, and what catches my attention even more today, is that the writer of the Book of Hebrews understood that faith cannot be contained to a dictionary definition, a textbook, a sermon or a worship service. That faith in the risen Christ is a total commitment of all we are and all we hope to be. That we are anchored in the Triune, who created us, redeems us and sustains us.

In the Book of Hebrews, (The book was written to Jewish Christians, probably as a sermon) is a wonderful litany of Old Testament figures who exhibited their faith without experiencing the totality of God’s redeeming grace.

This is why we need to embrace these sacred words from Hebrews, to remind ourselves in the midst of the gray that faith will give us the

assurance to get through discouraging times and trust that we will see with clarity God’s grace and love.

Mrs. Peale is also a reminder for all of us that even when we can’t see, God bestows upon us a Christian community and faith followers who can help us see, even when life seems dark to us! This is exactly what our Church is all about!

This column is sponsored by the Renewal Works Steering Committee to joyfully recognize and honor the numerous ministries of our parish. Responses are compiled from our questionnaire, found on the St. James website, and serve to illustrate how we, through our ministries, continue to grow spiritually through study, worship, and service.

We are collecting reflections on lay ministries at St. James and how participation in ministry feeds us spiritually. Responses are anonymous. Each week we highlight one of the ministries from the questionnaire in this column.

Please share your experiences by responding to our questionnaire: tinyurl.com/STJamesrwQuestionnaire

MINISTRY: Lay Reader

WHAT IS DONE IN THIS MINISTRY AREA AND WHY?

Lay Readers at St. James Parish are assigned particular Sundays to read the scripture lessons to parishioners during the Sunday church services; they are also asked to read on special occasions for services during Lent, Advent and other high Holy days. They are a valued asset to our church family.

WHAT ABOUT THIS MINISTRY APPEALS TO YOU?

I feel called to be a lay reader, because of a background in voice and theater. I have a sense of using a talent, which has given me much personal pleasure, in a different way for God's glory. I hope that in the reading will be manifested my belief and reverence for the Word. Perhaps that will enhance the experience of all.

In order to read a scripture well for the congregation, I first must understand it myself. Often I have to read it in more than one Bible translation and even in a Bible commentary to get a clear understanding.

HOW DO YOU THINK IT ILLUSTRATES LOVE OF GOD AND NEIGHBOR?

I enjoy this ministry and feel blessed to be a part of our worship service. Also, the time spent studying and reading God's word helps me to establish a more intimate relationship with God. It is a very holy and rewarding ministry.

HELP PARISHIONERS ATTEND SERVICEWe have several parishioners who would like to continue to come to worship services and other events but can’t due to the lack of transportation. If you think you and your family might be available for rides to church on Sundays and possibly other events, please contact Claude Bridger by phone at (910) 762-2489, or by email at [email protected].

TUESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY RESUMES TUESDAY, APRIL 26APRIL 26 - MAY 31 | 7:00 P.M. | GRAHAM PARLOR

STORIES OF THE RESURRECTIONThis six-week series will focus on various accounts of the Resurrection, looking at stories from each of the gospels, as well as some thoughts thrown in from the apostle Paul. Led by Jay Sidebotham, this study offers an opportunity to read the scripture, to learn a bit about the distinctive context of each of the New Testament writers, and to determine the so-what factor, as we apply these seasoned stories to contemporary life. All are welcome. Come each week. Come just once. Our conversation will be enhanced by your presence.
