Great Big Sea win ECMA fan award for fifth year For the fifth consecutive year Great Big Sea was voted Entertainer of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards, which were held in Sydney, Nova Scotia (Cape Breton) and televised on the CBC-TV Network this past Feb. 6. The award is particularly important in that it is voted on by the fans. The WEA recording band, comprising Alan Doyle, Sean McCann, Darrell Power and Bob Hallett, also won Group and Album of the Year for Turn.

Gordie Sampson, who releases on the Universal label, was also a multiple-award winner, winning SOCAN Song of the Year and Video for Sorry, and tieing with EMI recording artist Kim Stockwood for Single of the Year, also for Sorry.

Other multiple-award winners were Kim Stockwood, John Curtis Sampson, Barachois and Natalie MacMaster, who shared hosting duties of the awards show with Newfoundland comic Shaun Majumder. Stockwood won as Pop/Rock Artist and Single for 12 Years Old. Barachois won for Francophone Recording for Encore and the Roots Traditional Group Award. John Curtis Sampson took home the awards for Country Artist and for New Artist/Group. MacMaster won the Female Artist and Roots/Traditional Solo Artist awards.

Eulogies are very rarely, if at all, part of an awards show. However with the setting for the ECMA Awards show being Cape Breton, it was only

fitting that this close-knit community pay a musical tribute to John Morris Rankin, a member of the local Rankin Family Band, who was killed in an auto accident on January 16 of this year. Two of John Morris' close friends, Dave MacIsaac and Howie MacDonald performed a very simple but highly emotional tribute on fiddle and guitar that hushed the house. But as the medley turned into one of John Morris' favourite jigs, the audience suddenly erupted in a hand-clapping celebration of his life, an emotional happening that displayed the high regard the industry and the community had for John Morris.

The awards show also featured performances by Ian Janes, Julie Doiron, An Acoustic Sin, Fur Packed Action, Measha Brueggergosman, Valentina Kotko, Aselin Debison, Bruce Guthro, The Barra MacNeils, Damhsa Breacan Dancers, Barachois, Damhnait Doyle, The Fables, Gordie Sampson, Kim Stockwood, Mary Jane Lamond, and Natalie MacMaster.

The Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award was presented posthumously to Lee Cremo, the Cape Breton fiddler, renowned for his unique Mi'kmaq-Scottish sound. Members of his family accepted the award.

Stompin' Tom/industry honours at ECMA Awards Stompin' Tom (Connors) Awards, honours to industry leaders and the Industry Builder Award shared the spotlight at this year's annual East Coast Music Association brunch which took place in Sydney, Nova Scotia as part of the ECMA Conference and Awards show.

Stompin' Tom Connors awards, are presented to musicians who have "made long-term contributions to the East Coast music industry and have paved the road for the many successful East

Coast artists of today." This year's awards went to Omar Blondahl, representing Newfoundland and Labrador; Nova Scotia's Carol Fredericks-Frank; Gib Whitney representing Cape Breton; Eddy Poirier from New Brunswick; and Prince Edward Island's Gordon Gallant.

The Industry Builder Award was presented to Jodla Foulds and Max MacDonald, co-owners of Rave Entertainment in Sydney. They were honoured for having "selflessly devoted their time and energy

MTV and Elektra offering AC/DC auction online MTV and the Elektra Entertainment Group are putting AC/DC's Angus Young on the auction block, so to speak. A personal guitar lesson from Young will be offered to the highest bidder via an online auction on eBay.

The auction is part of a nine-day AC/DC-athon, which begins Feb. 21 with an online chat at MTV.com with Angus Young and AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson. The eBay auction will be launched on Feb. 11, and ending on the 29th.

The winner of the auction will be announced on the 29th, which coincides with the release of the group's new album, Stiff Upper Lip. The high bidder will be announced on MTV's Total Request Live from a TBA New York record store, where AC/DC will make the first in-store appearance of their careers.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation, which provides music therapy treatment for severely disabled children.

Among other items to be auctioned via eBay are an invite to a special album launch party at New York's Hard Rock Cafe on Feb. 24th, and a front-row seat for AC/DC's performance on MTV's @ Large Week.

In addition to participating in the auction online, fans will be able to stream some songs from the new album, beginning on Feb. 21, via the auction page, which will contain links to Elektra.com, MTV.com, and participating retail sites.

Parlophone/EMI to re-release Lennon's Imagine With the year 2000 marking the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death, Parlophone/EMI Music Canada are releasing a remixed/remastered version of Lennon's landmark album Imagine on Feb. 15.

The re-release of Imagine will coincide with several other projects designed to honour the memory of the ex-Beatle. The re-issued album will feature a 16-page booklet with full lyrics (including

Durham's KX96 brings out the best in country KX96 New Country FM in Durham (Ajax) Ontario, has chalked up a heavy first-of-the-new-year round of activities with country acts from both sides of the border.

In addition to attending the CRTC hearings this past week for the 93.5 frequency in Toronto (RPM - Dec. 6/99), the station scheduled a large number of visits from country recording stars.

Shoreline recording artist Patricia Conroy was in the station's studio where she gave listeners a treat with an unplugged performance of a couple of songs from her new album. The station and Gabrielli Productions presented Conroy that same evening at a sold-out show at the Corral in Oshawa. Thomas Wade was even spotted on the dance floor.

Paul Brandt stopped by the station on Jan. 28 with his guitar and a couple of members of his band where they joined the KX96 morning team of Ellis

and Archer. They gave listeners a sample of KX96's presentation of Brandt and the Wilkinsons at Massey Hall on Feb. 17. Later that same day the station's operations manager Steve Kassay and promotions manager Adriane Vogel welcomed Trace Adkins live from Nashville to talk about More ..., his new album.

The station kicked off their Love On The Line Valentine's Day promotion on Jan. 31, soliciting listeners for their stories of how their Valentine "rescued them from Lonesomeville.", and on Feb. 14 Chris Cummings will be in the studio to promote his new Lonesomeville album and to choose at random eight "Lonesomeville survivor stories," which the winner will read on air. All eight winners will also receive a copy of Cummings' new album before it's available in stores on Feb. 15.

On Feb. 27 KX96/Gabrielli Productions present Farmer's Daughter at the Corral.

Lennon's own handwritten lyrics for How Do You Sleep?) and rare photos from the Lennon/Ono archives.

Along with the classic title track, Imagine also features Lennon favourites such as Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth and the aforementioned How Do You Sleep?

Yoko Ono participated heavily in the digital remixing of the album, and also worked on an accompanying film (to be released at the same time), which documents the making of the album.

Gimme Some Truth, the 56-minute film of the making of Imagine, will feature previously unseen footage from the Lennon film archives. The film was edited down from the original 16 mm print shot by John and Yoko. Along with the writing and recording of Imagine, the film also features casual appearances by friends such as Andy Warhol and Jack Nicholson. Much Music will air the film this April.

A DVDNHS version of Gimme Some Truth will be released on March 28.

Imagine was originally recorded in the summer of '71, and released in North America in September of that year. Although the title track hit #1 on the RPM 100 Singles chart (November 27/71), edging out Cher's Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves, the album peaked at #2 on the RPM 100 Albums chart (Oct. 30/71), but was held out of the top spot by Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells A Story.

Prior to the KX96/Gabrielli Productions presentation of Patricia Conroy atThe Corral in Oshawa, Conroy and fellow country artist Thomas Wade (left) met with KX96 morning man Jerry Archer (see story above).

Reprise artist Paul Brandt meets with KX96 staffers Steve Kassay, Carolyn Ellis, Jerry Archer and Adriane Vogel. The station is presenting Brandt, with The Wilkinsons, at Massey Hall on Feb. 17.

Tax to keep Cancon artists in Canada!!! While hockey has become the great Canadian heritage thing, I want to propose a tax on all foreign artists who perform in Canada to keep Cancon artists in Canada. For one, BA has threatened to move as well as ST, AM, CD and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Artists complain that the taxes in Canada are too high. (EC: Now, if some of these artists played hockey and we put together a team ... !!!) She shoots! She scores!

Global news!!! It was interesting to see that ABBA, Mariah Carey shoe vomit item and Natalie Cole rated higher in the news than the Juno nominations recently ... further supporting my contention that those licences are getting into the hands of not-so-pro-Canadians thanks to the CRTC. Too much control in too few hands! (EC: You've got this hate-on for TV!!!) Nope! Just the clutter in the wasteland and the foreign domination! Too much lobbying and too much rubber stamping!

Just kidding! The best thing about the ECMA Awards was the appearance of someone to look like Ashley MacIsaac ... trussed up like a turkey and gagged. This was the funniest thing on the show with the exception of the male comic who hosted ... and he did a good imitation of a Newfie! (EC: Highbrow humour usually leaves me behind!!!) Very funny! (EC: What was???) Like Ashley I'm not saying much!

From where I sat!!! Watching the ECMA Awards, I wondered why the organizers couldn't have trimmed down some of the fat on the show, and paid tribute to both John Morris Rankin and Hank Snow.

ECMA vs Juno Awards!!! Last year's ECMA Awards were short only two or three thousand viewers from the Juno Awards, which isn't bad. On the other hand, there's a very definite spread of East Coasters across the country ...like in Toronto where it's estimated there are more Newfoundlanders than anywhere else. (EC: Even more than in Newfoundland? And, for your information, I enjoyed the show!!!)

And, while we're at it!!! You gotta hand it to the Toronto Star. Entertainment Reporter Mitch Potter, wrote like he was at the East Coast Music Awards. The best coverage of all the dailies, which included a photo of the Ashley McIsaac spoof. He captured the very essence of the awards. He also drew a parallel of the ECMA Awards to that of the Juno Awards, pointing out that the ECMA awards show which honours the best in music from the four easternmost provinces "consistently draw a viewership approaching that of the national Juno Awards," which had 829,000 viewers in 1999, as opposed to the Junos with 1,195,000. (EC: Solution: Have more East Coast artists petfonn and present on the Juno Awards!!!)

The smokers did it!!! How about this. The biggest nightclub in North America, Lulu's in Cambridge/ Kitchener, Ontario, an old K-Mart, which will give you some idea of how big it is/was, is closing down with a final curtain on April 9. Benn Spiegel, who owns club, a landmark in the city for the past 15 years, blames the Waterloo Region's no smoking in bars bylaw. But there's also a few other make-'em-stay-away reasons, like liquor licence charges, fights after concerts and the cancellation of the Stompin' Tom Connors New Year's Eve party. So, there you go you smokers. Because you've stayed away in droves, 100 people will be out of a job. No news on who's going to be in for the final date, which could and should be the concert of the year. I've been to a few dates there and they can really pack 'em in. The only problem was going home. The cops regularly chalked the headlights of the cars in the parking lot, and when the customers left, they were waiting down the road a few miles and pulled over the cars that were conveniently marked. (EC: Trying to nail somebody smoking eh???)

Let's hear it for Avery!!! Remember a couple of weeks ago when it was mentioned here that someone should hire Avery Haines, where they would get a news personality with personality? Well, who better to take advantage of a situation and turn it around than City-tv? And they did ... and Avery should be in front of the cameras next week. (EC: Moses must have come down from the mount to handle this one personally!!!)

Deny! Deny! Deny!!! That next predicted merger of the giants isn't going to happen ... well, not the way some of the gurus had been proclaiming. One of the giants has been denying left, right and centre ... and you know what that means. (EC: SOLD ... to the highest bidder!!! ) Good news to some

Ashley's now the bad boy!!! You know what they say, "kick 'ern when they're down." From a spoof on the ECMA Awards show, which I thought was very funny and not at all in bad taste, to a report in the Globe and Mail's Arts Section of Feb. 2/00, on a New York benefit concert at Carnegie Hall

where Ashley MacIsaac was included in the lineup. Reporter Simon Houpt headlines his piece "Canada's bad boy plays nice," where he goes a little too indepth on MacIsaac's shortcomings. It wasn't a bad piece actually, except for the negative bit where he suggests that south of the border, "MacIsaac remains little known," and that autograph fans outside the Carnegie Hall stage door "had never heard of him." All of which makes me wonder why the organizers would want Ashley in the first place. (EC: Because he's a great draw ... that's why!!!)

To Internet or not!!! Do we grow wiser as we grow older? WOW! Has the Internet become the cat's ass or what? Last year a bunch of the guys in high places were saying NO WAY to gong online. But that was then, Now, with one less player and possibly two, the climate has changed and so has the verbiage. (EC: Don't you mean wordiness??)

They're chasing EB again!!! In the corporate world, they pick favourites to pick on ... and the more influential and successful the more we hear about them. They are always close to tarring and feathering EB and because he's a big target, moneywise, they continue to search and search. The latest is that he's getting rid of his studio and theme-park division. (EC: Oh! That EB! Why didn't you say so???) Maybe get rid of everything! Can't lose!

EMI Music Canada is releasing the first album from renowned clairvoyant Colette Baron-Reid, titled Journey Through The Chakras. The Toronto-based clairvoyant's album features a mix of eastern

mysticism with western psychology, as the listener is taken through a healing journey via the seven energy centres (chakras) of the body. The album features the single Love Is The Answer, performed by Baron-Reid herself, and co-written and co-produced by new age artist Mars Lasar. Baron-Reid is one of five subjects in a documentary feature called Hand Of Fate, scheduled for a Fall 2000 release. She is also the host of a new interne show dubbed Spirit Of Sound. The show, produced by House Of Blues, features Baron-Reid interviewing various celebrities about spirituality.

Listeners simply call in at the sound of The Nagging Wife. The 107th caller through instantly scores Blue Jay tickets and AMC movie passes, and an invitation to join the Q at an event where the ultimate prize is given away.

C ha n e I le Dupre, as mentioned last week, is acting

as the spokesperson for Women Rock, a concert taking place on March 7th at the Purple Onion in Vancouver. The show will feature seven of Vancouver's hottest up-and-coming artists, including Joyelle Brandt Trio, Katrina Bishop, Teena Davis, Cannelina Cupo, Shelley Lennox, Jenny Galt and Perpetuum. Proceeds from the show will help to raise funds for a newly-developed scholarship for Grade 12 girls interested in pursuing a career in music. Tickets for the show are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and are on sale via Ticketmaster. Dupre is making noise out west with her debut dance album, Make Your Move.

The updated Juno website (www.juno-awards.ca) provides a complete list of all the nominees, as well as artist mini-bios, and other assorted material. The Juno Awards take place March 12 at SkyDome, featuring performances by The Moffatts (who are hosting the show), Amanda Marshall, Barenaked Ladies, Chantal Kreviazuk, Diana Krall, Great Big Sea, Our Lady Peace and Prozzak. A pre-telecast portion, starting at 6 pm, will feature performances by Maestro, soulDecision, Boomtang Boys and McMaster & James.

Mariah Carey is confirmed for April 7 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre in an evening presented by Concerts West. This is the only Canadian date on Carey's Rainbow Tour, and her first-ever concert appearance in Canada.

Limblifter are releasing their sophomore album, Bellaclava, on their own Limblifter Records label, on March 7th. Universal will continue to handle all marketing and distribution for the band's product. The first single, Ariel Vs. Lotus, is already garnering rock radio airplay. The band, consisting of Ryan Dahle, Kurt Dahle and Todd Fancey, scored impressive numbers with their debut release. The Dahle brothers were previously in Age Of Electric, who had a gold record in Make A Pest A Pet.

Faith Hill returns to #1 with her Breathe single the title track from her Warner Bros album. The single topped the chart originally on Dec. 20, holding for four weeks. The single dropped to #3, but this week moves back up to #1.

George Strait has the big mover with The Best Day his latest MCA Nashville single jumping up to #21 from #49 after only four weeks. The track was taken from his new CD, Latest Greatest Straitest, which he produced with Tony Brown.

Ty Herndon has the most added with his latest Epic single, No Mercy, entering the chart at #79. The song was written by Dennis Morgan, Todd Cerney and Stephen Allen Davis and was taken from his Steam CD which was produced by Joe Scaife.

Blue Rodeo has been given the country nod once again. Somebody Waits, which has made impressive moves up the CMT Top 40 (#11) and on the RPM A/C chart (#9), enters the country chart at #82. The song, which qualifies as three-parts Cancon (MAL), was written by bandmembers Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy. The track is included on their WEA album The Days In Between which was produced by the band and Trina Shoemaker and recorded at Kingswood Studios in New Orleans and The

COUNTRY Bathouse in Bath, Ontario. There are no MAPL logos which makes it difficult to determine what tracks are Cancon, although all the songs on the CD were written by Keelor and Cuddy. Besides Keelor (vocals, guitar) and Cuddy (vocals, guitar, keys), the band comprised Bazil Donovan (bass), Glenn Milchem (drums, percussion) and James Gray (piano, Hammond, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, string samples). Kim Deschamps, who has left the band, is heard on pedal steel guitar and Greenfield Hawaiian guitar. Tour dates which began mid-January, takes the band across Canada. They have already played a number of Ontario, Quebec and BC dates and are working their way east where we catch up with them in Edmonton at the Jubilee Auditorium (Feb. 14), Saskatoon's Centennial Hall (16), Regina's Doris Knight Hall (17), Winnipeg's Walker Theatre (19), the community Auditorium in Thunder Bay (20), Toronto's Massey Hall (24), and Windsor's Cleary Auditorium (27). March dates begin in the Atlantic Provinces at Moncton's Capitol Theatre (3), followed by Sydney's Savoy Theatre (7), the Metro Centre in Halifax (9), the Delta Ballroom in St. John's (10-11), the Campbellton

Shane Minor who made a tremendous impact on Canadian country programmers with his Ordinary Love single (#96) hits hard with his follow-up I Think You're Beautiful. Written by Steve Diamond and Maribeth Derry, the new release enters the chart at #84. Both tracks are included on his self-titled Mercury CD which was produced by Dann Huff.

Julian Austin is expected to chart quickly with his new single Take The Money & Run. This is the follow-up to Back In Your Life, the title track from his upcoming ViK CD. The new single is a cover of Steve Miller's Top 10 hit (RPM - July 31/76) and qualifies as two-parts Cancon (AP). Austin's CD was produced by Daniel LeBlanc, a fellow-New Brunswicker who produced Austin's Little 01' Kisses, which won a 1998 Big Country Award for

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY 0.S.T - Rap Various Artists Warner Bros. - CD83272 Found it! A rap album that doesn't feature Eminem. And a compilation that finally squares off hip hop stars such as LL Cool J, Cappone-N-Noreaga, Mobb Deep, DMX and Outcast, for instance, against Alternative Rock contemporaries: Hole, Kid Rock, Godsmack and P.O.D. Missing in action with Eminem is Limp Bizkit. Seriously though, this clever, versatile soundtrack to Oliver Sones latest, a football flick, starring Al Pacino. Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx and L.L. Cool J, explodes onto the field with the silky R&B vocals of Missy Elliott, set to thunderous orchestra licks. Most of the hip-hop offerings are passable with the exception of the interactive. catchy Jump by DMX and Swizz Beat featuring Eve and Drag-On with Move Right Now. Of special note is the introspective, inspirational ballad, the title track by Jamie Foxx featuring Guru and Common. LL Cool J's effort is, well, unnatural with the rap tempo up at a breakneck, uncomfortable pace. If you want pace, then, the likes of POD., Hole, Godsmack. Overseer and Kid Rock deliver. It is doubtful that the movie will influence album sales. However take a look a the online marketing, which is amazingly creative with graphics from the film and audio samples from the soundtrack. Although no single song or artist like Eminem really carries this soundtrack, the album's diversity will provide the legs to get it to the fan base. -TS

NEXT FRIDAY 0.S.T Various Artists Priority Records - V2 23123 Besides the fact that Ice Cube successfully recruited Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean (Fugees), Aaliyah, the Isley Brothers, Eminem, [il' Zane, Ja Rule and others to donate tracks, most important is Ice Cube's success in reuniting his old rap crew - Dre, Snoop Dogg, and MC Hen of N.W.A. on the single Chin Check. Dr. Dre hinted months ago about a possible collaboration between himself and the surviving members of one of hip-hop's notorious "gangsta-rap" outfits. Dre got the ball rolling by featuring Snoop Dogg on his Dr. Dre 2001 release. Dre has also hinted that a full-length album is in the works, which remains to

be seen and one wonders if it will include the last member of N.W.A., Yella. Yells has been keeping low profile and Eazy-E died from Aids complications in 1996. In the meantime, hardcore fans will have to relish Chin Check, Ice Cube, on the other hand, plans to release his next full-length album, titled War & Peace Volume 2-The Peace Disc the end of February. Next Friday is the sequel to the 1995 comedy Friday and is in theatres now. -TS

CYPRESS HILL Los Grandes Éxitos En Espaol Columbia - CK 63712 A grand Spanish experiment indeed for Cypress Hill, releasing this greatest hits in Spanish package prior to the their fifth album due in the first quarter of this year. One new song Siempre Peligroso (Always Dangerous) with members of leading Mexican hip-hop outfit Control Machete compliments a collection of the group's classics from its four albums. Tracks include Insane In The Brain (Loco En El Coco), How I Could Just Kill A Man (No Entiendes La Onda), Make A Move (Muevete), Pigs (Puercos) and Nothin' To Loose (No Pierdo Nada) featuring Sen Dog's brother Mellow Man Ace. The most glaring omission is the classic: Salte Arededor, Jump Around. Too many syllables? Take a look at the album graphics and you may agree that Los Grandes Exítos En Espaol may be a loss leader to launch B*Real. Bobo. Dj Muggs and Sen Dog's fifth studio album - Skull & Bones. The first single from the forthcoming album Superstar is believed to enlist other superstar MCs such as Noreaga, Eminem and Everlast and should hit the streets later this month. La espalda bienvenida. -TS

CROWDED HOUSE Afterglow Capitol-23722-F Oh they were good, those crazy lads from New Zealand, perhaps much better than they were ever given credit for. And when you seek to define the meaning of pop purety in the nineties, you'd be hard-pressed to look beyond the sublime subtleties of Neil Finn, the principal songwriter and frontman of the band. Finn had an incredible knack with a hook that was far above most of the songsmiths of the day, and combining that hook with the sweet harmonies of his fellow bandmates gave Crowded House a sound that was simple but oh. so sensuous. Sadly, the band decided to part ways, but Capitol/EMI was wise enough to not let such a good thing go to waste. Thus, the label has released this cozy collection of 13 tracks, most of them previously unreleased numbers from the sessions for their four studio albums. One of the tracks, Private Universe, did appear on an album previously (Together Alone), but the others are all unheard gems. What's amazing about Finn et al is that this so-called 'throwaway' material is as good, or better, than most of the stuff heard on radio today. There are plenty of cuts here which radio could wrestle with, including I Love You Dawn (written by Finn for his wife), Dr. Livingstone (written

after a two-week trip to Mozambique), My Telly's Gone Bung (written by drummer Paul Hester), Sacred Cow (from the Woodface sessions), and Time Immemorial (which producer Mitchell Froom felt was too folkie for a Crowded House album. Although we can expect Finn to continue to pop up from time to time in various incarnations, Crowded House is sadly no longer. Afterglow - what an appropriate title - serves as a fitting epitaph. -RR

McLACHLAN/RICHARDS - Country Pop Sowing The Seed Independent Clever programming by this southern Ontario pair of songwriter/performers, who have obviously parlayed their years of experience into a mindset that works. Clever too is their strong lead vocals and harmonies, some of the latter courtesy of Grant Heywood and Bill Simmermaker. Patch into What's A Boy To Do,

taken as the first single, and you'll get the general drift of their direction. Country Pop isn't perhaps the best category to put them in. The country roots are predominant but there's also a contemporary rock edge, a leaning to new country, and certainly a pop structuring that reveals crossover possibilities. The key here is confidence in vocal projection and a natural feel and interpretation of the lyrics. All the material was written by (Dennis) McLachlan (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica), and (Robert) Richards (vocals, drums, percussion), with the exception of River Of Tears, which was written by Bill Braun (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, dobro, slide guitar), a former Wild Oats member, which McLachlan and Richards had been associated with in 1995. This is a key track by the way, as is Down In Mexico, One Eyed World, River Of Tears and From The Ashes. Other session musicians were Gary Halliwell (bass). Ralph Hedke (accordian, organ), Gregg Dechert (keyboards), Steve Strongman (electric guitar), and Mark Wilms (piano). The album was recorded at Sound On Sound Studio in Kitchener, Ontario. McLachlan, Richards and Braun produced. Grant Heywood of the Desert Dolphins is providing guidance. Contact 519-669-4192. -WG

GHEORGHE ZAMFIR The Feeling Of Romance CMC/EMI-5233252-F It'd be easy but innacurate and decidely unfair to dismiss the music of Zamfir and his pan flute as gift shop music. Oh, there's no question that it's serene but it's far from bland to a discriminating listener. There's artistry of technique (especially when he's backed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra) but there's also a certain je ne sais quoi of almost visceral emotion. All but one of the 18 tracks are covers -- Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, Elton John and more -- of romance ballads and melodies played with affection. Best cut? How Deep Is Your Love. It has never sounded better. The Bee Gees should be pleased by it. -BW

DAVID WILKIE - Cowboy Celtic Cowboy Celtic Collection Passion-301 (Independent) The name David Wilkie is magic when it comes to things country, and here, he's broadened his scope and come up with a new category, Cowboy Celtic. Wilkie is a music historian as this CD will reveal, tracing his own Scottish roots to come up with this superb production that includes five new tracks as well as the "best of" from two previous albums. Wilkie and his mandolin are legend. It was his Great Western Orchestra that won a Big Country Award as Outstanding New Artist in 1990. Since then Wilkie has concentrated on evolving his unique style of music that melds with the much broader North American cowboy music with intriguing celtic overtones. Wilkie, who is masterful on the mandolin, shows his vocal side on six of these tracks with Denise Withnell vocalizing on three tracks and contributing guitar inserts. They are joined by celtic harpist Ken Lynn Zwicker, Matt Woodward on fiddle, Nathan McCavana on bodhran and Scott Ring on whistles. a highly professional team who provide that necessary music bridge to add credibility to Wilkie's material, particularly on Cowboy Celidh/High Noon, The Ballad Of Nate ChampionfThe Black Nag, and Mandocarolan. And what an exceptional job they do on Wilkie's arrangements on traditional fare like Annie Laurie, Bonnie Barbara Allen, the Railroad Corral, Whoopee Ti-Yi -Yo, Git Along Little Dogies and The Cowboy's Lament. -WG

ALBUM PICK GRAMMY NOMINEES 2000 Various Artists Grammy/RCA-67945-N The annual compilation of Grammy nominees, which revolves between the majors, has usually been a surefire thing at retail. Afterall, where else can the casual fan pick up so many big hits from the past year on one CD. This time out. it's BMG's turn to chalk up the sales figures, and it doesn't hurt that some of the biggest songs on this comp are already part of the BMG family. The ubiquitous Backstreet Boys lead off the parade with record of the year nominee I Want It That Way, followed by three other record of the year nominees - Livin' La Vida Loca (Ricky Martin). Smooth (Santana/Rob Thomas), and No Scrubs (TLC). Then there's the quintet of new artist nominees, including Christina Aguilera (Genie In A Bottle), Macy Gray (Do Something), Kid Rock (Bawitdaba), Britney Spears (Baby One More Time) and Susan Tedeschi (It Hurt So Bad). And finally, there's four representatives from the male pop vocal category, including Marc Anthony (I Need To Know), Lou Begs (Mambo No. 5), Sogno (Andrea Bocelli) and Sting (Brand New Day). Some of the proceeds from the album go to the NARAS Foundation for music education initiatives, a project similar to the Band-Aid benefit started here by CARAS after the release of the Oh! What A Feeling box set. -RR

John Curtis Sampson, who won two East Coast Music Awards this past week for New Artist and Country Artist, is getting a promotion push from Anne Oakley of Gemstone Entertainment to bring home his single When I'm DrinIcin'. The single is being tracked by Deborah Wood Publicity in Cobourg, Ontario. The track was taken from his Gemstone CD, You Got It (RPM New Releases - Dec. 20/99).

Shania Live, starring Annette Belanger, billed as "a tribute to Shania Twain," moves into The Wild Rose at the International Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre on Toronto's Airport Strip on Feb. 11. Belanger, who heats up her act with several costume changes, is accompanied by a six-piece band. The Wild Rose is a 9,000 square foot western-inspired new country showplace that accommodates up to 800 people with a large dance floor. For more information contact the hotel's public relations manager Joyce Hu at 416-246-7934.

The band is made up of Mark Smith (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Sean Smith (bass, vocals), Kurt Neis (lead guitar, vocals), Brad Johnson (drums, vocals), and Don Jorgensen (keyboards, guitar, mandolin, vocals).

Wes Weldon, who chairs Tribute 2000, is expected this year to be the best yet with special guests being lined up to come from as far away as Nashville. Last year, more than 50 of country music's best pickers, all volunteer performers, provided close to 24 hours of classic country entertainment from Friday night to Sunday morning.

This year's tribute will also see the return of the popular Sounds Like Hank contest, a guitar-picking contest that last year was sponsored by the Martin Guitar Company. Yodelling and songwriting workshops and a number of other popular features have become tribute traditions since the first event which was held at Summerville Beach in 1991.
