Instead of accommodating the high-rise program in a rudimentary pragmatic sense, the decision was made to address the essence of high-rise construction from its typological foundation. Rather than subscribe to previous design dogma, research led us to beg the question; why are high-rise buildings not addressed from within the same design philosophy as urban design issues? Can a vertical building, in effect, become a 3rd axis extrusion of the urban fabric? By allowing such interaction to occur; can the building develop it’s own micro-cosmic community fabric that will help to guide the interactions of it’s volumes, programmatic functions, and, ultimately, the inhabitants?

In the present San Diego, the city has lost its symbiotic relationship with the bay, asking only from the bay to provide panoramic backdrop to the activities of daily living and scattered entertainment. There exists a friction betwixt the formidable provisions of the bay water and the encroaching land mass of San Diego proper. A friction established by a shift in economic support, from a sea based to a land based economy. Friction in the traditional sense is perceived to be negative, yet there are many positive aspects of friction that be re-applied to the city/bay connection; more specifically, the exploitation of friction as a binding force, akin to the knot in a rope. The aspects of either system can maintain identity while concurrently allowing their constituent elements to interact and bind without subordinate combination.
As time progresses, the structure will impose a process of decomposition upon itself which will follow and established hierarchy including systems of material composition, material size, programmatic relevance, and position/
In keeping with the competition concept of “Sustain-A-Build, the goal was to create a livable, portable structure for 4 people, to convey the idea of sustainability to the fullest as well as utilize current scientific research about metabolic systems and their natural processes of degradation.
