Presidents Message
As I sit here in mid April with the fireplace lit, I wonder when spring will arrive? It is my hope that by the
time this article is in print…spring will finally here!
We had fun at the March meeting with Joyce sharing acrylic pouring. I hope several of you will bring your
piece to the May meeting and share during Show n Tell.
Thank you to Bobbi Brady and Lois Eckert for taking the time to make a display at the local library for the
month of April. I understand that only one individual brought one item for display but you ladies had
enough stash to complete the display! I know it was last minute, but remember it is good to share your
beautiful artwork with other. In June, we will be hanging artwork at Messiah Village. Please consider
sharing a few of your pieces.
I did get the 2018 Membership cards from the Society, they are blank. I plan to give each member their
blank card and they can write their own name and membership number. It is my hope to not have to mail
individual cards since that expense will not be reimbursed by the Society. If you want your card and don’t
plan to attend any upcoming meetings, please let me know and we can make arrangements for me to mail
your card.
Calling all members! We had to cancel the April Seminar with Sandy McTier due to participating. It is the
Boards hope not to have to cancel the July Seminar with Brenda Stewart. Don’t be afraid that you aren’t
good enough to paint with Brenda, every one of us has the experience to take a seminar.
In closing, I will be heading to Daytona Beach Florida for the SDP Conference. Please share via email any
questions or concerns that you would like me to address if given the chance. I will be attending the
Chapters Gathering and the Annual Meeting.

Seminar News:
Brenda Stewert’s seminar is July 20th – 22nd, , 2018. Friday we will be painting at the Monroe

which will be Friday and is a one-day project. This will give us all enough time to finish both projects –
no UFO”S!
The registration form is included in this newsletter along with the pictures of each project. I hope to
see you all at each of these seminars.
As of the writing of this newsletter article we are still shy of the 15 people that we need to breakeven.
If we don’t get 15 people signed up we will have to cancel Brenda, so please get those registration

MEMORY BOX Program
TOUCHING LIVES THROUGH CREATIVITY
www.memoryboxes.org
Thanks to Pat Meyers for donating 12 heart-shaped paper mache boxes
from her personal "stash." I found an epattern that I have by Chris Haughey
painted on a heart-shaped tray that I am going to try on one of these boxes. It
has ribbon, lace, and three small roses on it. The ribbon and lace I can handle,
but after all these years, I am still intimidated by roses. On closer examination,
they look more like what I call "folk art" roses, which are a little easier. If you have
a pattern that would look good on a heart-shaped paper mache box, take one
and try it.
On April 19, Dottie Shultz and I attended the UPMC Pinnacle Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the West Shore Country Club. It's always
interesting to talk to the other people at the luncheon who volunteer at the UPMC
Pinnacle hospitals and see what they contribute. Penns Woods Painters is one of
28 organizations that contribute "Gifts of the Heart."
At the present time, we have 97 painted Memory Boxes and 43 unpainted
paper mache boxes. The Board has given me approval to send 18 memory
boxes to hospital(s) that have requested boxes from memoryboxes.org. I am
waiting for the Administrator to send me the name and addresses of the hospitals.
Dottie or I will continue to bring paper mache boxes to regular meetings as
you never know when we will get the call for more Memory Boxes from our local
hospitals. It's been a while since we have gotten a call from Penn State Health
Children's Hospital. If I am at the meeting, I will bring patterns also.
Thanks for continuing to support this worthwhile community service project.

Member Spotlight Hi fellow PWP members!
Whoever would have thought a little black coffee pot painted with strawberries and daisies in a storefront window would lead to a life time obsession with painting? Certainly not me! But that was the start of it all. But alas, before I could investigate this little treasure, my husband got transferred across the country—2500 miles to be exact. That little coffee pot seemed only a wishful dream until a neighbor in my new location invited me to join her for a mom’s night out to take tole painting lessons. I couldn’t wait for my first class and haven’t met a brush, bottle, tube of paint, canvas or piece of wood I couldn’t live without since. Oh what an adventure! That was Vancouver, WA, 1979. We again got transferred just 2 years later, this time to Lebanon,
PA and I just knew I would find tole painters and classes in the heart of the PA Dutch Country. I did just that when I ventured into Self Expressions in Palmyra. Joan Koser, the owner is the reason I am an accomplished artist today. She really demanded discipline and laid a strong foundation for color theory, stroke work, brush control and the opportunity to study with many outstanding teachers in the industry. I took every seminar I could, studied with Joan weekly and ventured into teaching acrylics (new medium to everyone) at her shop. When the shop closed, my neighbors insisted I teach classes in my basement. We had a blast! Their favorite subject matter---santas of all kinds. I still have those santas, who grace my mantel, shelves and hearth every year and bring back fond memories. It was only a short time after joining the weekly classes at Joan’s that someone mentioned the National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters. What in the world was that? We did a little research and quickly organized a meeting to invite all painters to join in founding a local chapter. I don’t remember how many artists showed up for that meeting, but it was definitely the start of something great! We had several Make-It-Take-Its and ended up with elected officers and a schedule of meetings for the next year. Penns Woods Painters received It’s charter in Indianapolis in 1990. Since that time, we have moved 3 more times to faraway places. My family all had activities-- school, sports, Church and of course work, that immediately gave them a group to belong to. My lifeline was painting. The first thing I did was look for an SDP chapter in my new location. I knew it would be my safe place where I would instantly have friends who loved what I did—painting. Once the kids leave the nest, you’re on your own. I am eternally grateful to all the artists, far and wide, I can call friends, thanks to SDP. It is with gratitude that I have served on the SDP board, as did other PWP Founding members, Sheila Rouse and Wendy Watson. And to think it all started with a little black coffee pot!
