Adopt a family for Christmas! Each year many of our familiesengage in this wonderful experience, and we invite you to join in aswell. Here’s how this works: We get the names of families in need at Christmas, usually from within the church or from ourrelationship with Towslee Elementary School. Youtell us what size family you would be willing toadopt. We provide a “wish list” from the kids inthis anonymous family. You shop for and wrap thegifts and bring them to church. We make the deliveries so as toprotect anonymity. You get the blessings of being generous, children get the blessings of having a good Christmas, parent(s) getthe blessings of seeing their kids have a much better day than theycould have provided, and God gets the honor of it all!

If you wish to participate, please write “adopt” on yourWelcome Card. If you know of a family who needs to be adopted, please get that information to Pastor Dan or Pastor Jay asap.

Sermon Title: Shalom

Out of all of the candles on the Advent wreath _______ is myfavorite, because this time of year for so many people is theopposite of peace.

A story about the Carroll Family Christmas Gathering…

It’s funny to me how different people have different definitions ofpeace based on their experiences and circumstances.

Isaiah 9:1-7 In the Old Testament that was how peace was defined, as Shalom, the total well-being, prosperity, and security associated with God’s__________ among his people.

That is why God is the King of Peace and Jesus is the Prince ofPeace, because true shalom is only available through His presencein our lives, and in the Old Testament it was through __________.

We often think of peace as the absence of war, or the absence ofconflict. But the Bible defines shalom not by our circumstances, but by our feelings and reactions to our circumstances based onGod’s presence in our lives.

In the New Testament shalom comes to us in the form of a ______ __________with Jesus Christ, and is lived out by faith.

John 14:22-27

Jesus tells us that his shalom is not as the world gives, his peace isdifferent, not based on circumstances, and in fact Paul calls it inPhil 4:7 “the peace of God which transcends all understanding.”

Luke 12:52: “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, Itell you, rather __________”

Jesus’ presence and his truth can cause divisions among families ororganizations, unfortunately even the church, but that doesn’t meanthat we don’t have shalom.

Jesus gives us shalom that mends relationships, it brings about___________________.

Jesus reconciles the relationship between mankind and God. When Jesus died on the cross he took our sins upon him,and our sin is what separates us from God

So if sin causes us to be at war with God, Jesus is the______ that makes things all better.

Jesus also mends relationship between mankind and other people.Once we realize how we deserve God’s wrath for our sin,but we know that we have received grace instead, we arefree then to offer grace to those around us that mightdeserve our wrath.

Matthew 5:43-45 and Colossians 3:13

Challenges for this week:1. If you do not have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ

then you are still at war with God and I challengeyou to talk to myself or Pastor Dan or an elder inthis church to see what is needed for a treaty.

2. Be a peacemaker with others and offer love andforgiveness to people in your life that need it.

3. Reach out to someone that might need our forgivenessand reconciliation.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived bythe Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under PontiusPilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell. Thethird day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heavenand sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thencehe shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, thecommunion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection ofthe body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
