Our Career Development Programme (CDP) is an integralpart of our MBA course. You will be coached continually tobe able to define your attributes and skills, to know andarticulate your value to an employer, and to plan not onlyyour next job but also your future career.

The Business Project is also a key factor in this. It isindividual to you, so it can reflect your aspirations and the needs of your current or future employers. It can also be of real value. Spend time, research it well, and it will bean important part of your CV.

Brunel Business School is located in West London,equidistant between the City and the M4 corridor, and close to Heathrow Airport.

Although some of our alumni go on to work in seniorpositions in the large organisations, we don’t only turn out accountants, financial directors and project managers.Our students come from all kinds of backgrounds, inmarketing, retail, the public sector, healthcare, aviation,manufacturing. Full-time MBASeptember startThe one year full-time Brunel MBA is designed for candidates who can commit to a full 12 months of study on campus and who prefer to complete their MBA in the shortest time possible.It begins with an orientation workshop in September. Eight coremodules are taught over two terms with lectures and seminarsscheduled on weekdays. These are scheduled on Fridays andSaturdays throughout the year. Workshops in the LeadershipMasterclass Series take place on Fridays and Saturdays throughoutthe year. The Business Project is mainly undertaken from Mayonwards, with some preparatory sessions before.

In addition to classes and workshops, you will probably spendaround 12 to 15 hours a week in private study. We help you witha comprehensive study guide for each module and access to allour campus facilities and to Brunel’s extensive online learningresource. So although it’s a tough schedule, once into their stride,most of our students find it can be done and fitted around workand other commitments!

In addition, from your first day with us our aim is to help you with your career development. Through the Career DevelopmentProgramme (CDP) as well as via the soft-skills workshops as part of the Leadership Masterclass Series (LMS), we aim to developyour leadership, managerial, decision-making and personal values for your future benefit

1. OrientationIt may be some time since you last undertook a period of formalacademic study, so your study skills may be a little rusty. To helpyou prepare for your MBA, you will begin with a three dayorientation that introduces the key concepts of the MBA and provides valuable advice on how to study effectively.

2. Core modulesOver the course of your MBA, you will study eight core modules,which cover the essentials of business activity.

i. Corporate and business financeYou will gain a thorough understanding of the world of finance,the concepts of risk and the cost of capital, as well as the processof financial management in the long and short term. You will alsolearn the principles of management accounting, and systematictechniques for analysing and evaluating the financial health of an organisation, including the construction and interpretation of financial statements.

ii. Leading people and managing organisationsGood organisations recognise that human capital is a key resource.This module helps you understand the many factors that influencepeople’s behaviour and their effective performance. Through thedevelopment of critical thinking and independent judgement, youwill gain a better theoretical and practical appreciation of how tomotivate, lead, work together, communicate with colleagues, andmanage conflicts of interest.

iii. Strategic marketing managementThis module will give you a thorough knowledge of the principalmarketing concepts and how marketing has evolved as a businessdiscipline with the rapid expansion of new technology. You willlearn how to conduct a marketing audit, construct a marketingplan, and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities.

iv. Operations managementIn this module you will explore the approaches, techniques and tools of managing operations. You will gain a greaterawareness of how strategic issues, both within the boundaries of organisations and beyond, affect how operations are plannedand controlled. You will also develop a better appreciation of therelationship between performance imperatives and the design ofoperations or services.

v. International businessThis module considers the many challenges, both instrumental and ethical, of managing complex international organisationsacross geographical and cultural borders. It will provide anunderstanding of the mechanisms for entering new markets and emerging economies and the consequent need to cope with global diversity, risk and uncertainty.

vi. Corporate and competitive strategyThis module will introduce the concepts and methodological toolsand techniques for analysing an organisation’s strategic position.You will gain an appreciation of the complex issues and challengesthat face those responsible for the strategic management oforganisations in changing and uncertain conditions.

The Brunel MBA consists of orientation, six core modules, two electives, a Business Project ofyour own choosing, a Leadership Masterclass Series, and a continuous programme of careerdevelopment. Teaching methods include lectures, interactive case discussions, small group andplenary discussions as well as presentations, role plays and videos.

3. Business ProjectTo complete your MBA, you will be required to undertake an in-depth study of a business or management issue of particularinterest to you. It could be something that you have met in yourcareer to date, a challenge that your organisation currently faces,or an exploration of a subject completely outside of your ownexperience. The choice is up to you.

You will be expected to conduct extensive research, analyse yourfindings and reach your own conclusions. But before you embarkon your project, we will give you comprehensive guidance and willcoach you all the way through, from the first draft to yourcompleted 12,000 word report.

A successful project is a great way to apply the knowledge you have gained in the programme, demonstrate your businessacumen, and tailor your MBA to your own interests and needs, or to those of your current or future employers.

Should you wish to study for a special award in Healthcare orAviation Management, you will need to choose a sectorspecific topic for dissertation as well as two relevant electives.

As well as building up your management knowledge through the six fundamental core modules, the Brunel MBA also gives you the opportunity to specialise your MBA by way of elective modules.Three pathway choices are available: general business, healthcare or aviation management. You canchoose any two electives, however, if you wish to specialise in aviation or healthcare management, youwill need to choose the two relevant electives as well as a sector specific topic for your Business Project.

4. Elective Modules

i. Information systems in organisations You will examine the changing role of information systems (IS) and their impact on individuals, business and society. You will study a range of topics relating to eBusiness, customerrelationships, knowledge management, and the latest theories,practical developments and future trends in the field. Drawing on your own business experience, you will identify and resolve a specific concern using a strategic IS solution.

ii. Managing for the futureIt is not the aim of this module that students will be able to predict the future! Instead, the aim is to introduce students toseveral methods developed specifically for considering, elaboratingand interrogating ‘futures’ more thoroughly, and in a structured or semi-structured way, in order to improve the quality of actionsthat they will be capable of taking in their own rights as managersand practitioners. These methods include those developed inindustry as well as within academia.

iii. Global diversity managementThis module provides an insight into the key concepts, historicalevolution and contemporary practices of global diversitymanagement. During this study you will develop an appreciationfor managing diversity in multinational and global organisations inpublic, private and the voluntary sector, in partnership with linemanagement and leadership. You will also develop a keyunderstanding of diversity in the context of organisational change.

iv. Healthcare policy settingYou will gain a sophisticated knowledge of the political setting of health policy, you will also be able to analyse its influence and critically evaluate the role and effectiveness of healthcareprofessionals and managers in the policy-making process.

v. Managing change in healthcareThis module will help you develop original and innovativeinitiatives in healthcare management and help you to promotethem within your organisation’s strategic plans and culture. You will also review, analyse and evaluate current developments in healthcare policy as they impact on implementing change anduse research evidence to evaluate the success of change theories,strategies and initiatives in delivering best practice.

vi. Airport management and operationsThis module will enable you to compare and evaluate differentmodels for the successful management of an airport, with anenhanced appreciation of the role that economic, environmental,safety and security factors play, and how airport design caninfluence the process.

vii. Airline management, economics and ethicsThrough an introduction to the underlying principles of airlinemanagement, this will give you a deeper understanding ofthe economics, customer relationship dynamics and marketingstrategies involved in running a successful airline business.It also considers the professional ethics demanded of theindustry, both within and by society at large.

Brunel Research into Entrepreneurship, InternationalBusiness and Innovation in Emerging Markets (CEIBIEM)In 2010 CEIBIEM was created from the merger of Brunel’s BRESEand CIBSEM research groups. The merger created a researchgroup with a unique focus on entrepreneurship, internationalstrategy and innovation in emerging markets. CEIBIEM uses itsstrength in qualitative analysis to promote the study of the futureevolution of business in an international and comparative contextto influence to best practice and policy.

Centre for Research in to Emotion Work and Employment Studies (CREWES)CREWES builds on our unique and internationally recognisedexpertise in emotion work, employment and careers. Its research is empirically driven, cross-disciplinary and collaborative and at theforefront in the field. Its core interests are in work that transformsthe emotional state of others, including unpaid caring, and it takes critical perspectives on recent developments in employmentstudies, employment relationships and cross-national employment.

Centre for Research into Consumer and Social Marketing (CREAM)CREAM brings together unique research strengths in corporateand ethical branding, corporate identity, retailing and creativity in marketing. It has explored the branding of professional services,corporate re-branding and cultural alignment, and customerbehaviour in the retail environment, electronic retailing and online shopping.

Information Systems Evaluation and Integration (ISEing)ISEing focuses on solutions to management issues, in both private and public sectors, which use business informationsystems, technology and communication to improve efficiency,effectiveness and performance. Brunel Research into Accounting and Auditing (AARC)AARC provides a focus for investigating current issues in corporate financial reporting, auditing and corporate governance.Specialist areas include the accounting and assurance needs ofSMEs and the impact of policy on financial reporting by smallerentities. The Centre provides a vibrant environment forexperienced and emerging researchers to work on national and international projects.

Brunel UniversityBrunel University is located on a single campus in Uxbridge, on the western outskirts of London, close to Heathrow Airport andwith excellent links to the rest of the UK via the M4, M40 andM25 motorways. The recent campus masterplan saw over £250million invested in new buildings, infrastructure and environment.A 30m new Business School is due for completion in Spring 2012.

We extended the library and computer centre, with a hugelyincreased book and journal collection, more computerworkstations, group study areas and an assistive technology centre for disabled students.

We added a new student facilities complex, with a stunningatrium leading to dining space, bars, the students’ union andvarious retail outlets.

We now have UEFA class football facilities, a competition standardathletics complex and sports and fitness centre. And eighteen new halls of residence and a new residential village bring our on-campus accommodation up to 4,751 rooms.

The Michael E. Porter MBA CentreOur MBA students have their own dedicated facilities here, withconference and audio-visual presentation theatres, seminar rooms,break-out areas, computer and ICT equipment and even our owncatering facilities. It’s the perfect place to study or meet with staff and fellow students and is open until 10pm.

The Brunel Graduate SchoolAs a Brunel MBA student, you will automatically become amember of the university’s Graduate School. Entry requirementsCandidates are normally expected to have both a good firstdegree and at least three years’ post graduation work experienceat a managerial or professional level.

Candidates without a first degree who can demonstrate extensivemanagerial experience at a senior level may also be considered.If English is not your first language, then you will have to showevidence of competence in English. Fees and fundingThe Brunel MBA is excellent value for money compared to many elite UK business schools.
