    in handheld XRF

    Bruker Elemental, Handheld XRF, cantrace its history back to the early 1980sand the US National Laboratory inRichland, Washington. It was there thata team o scientists rom United NuclearInc and the US Department o Energypioneered the early breakthroughs inportable XRF. That led to the ormation

    o Scitec, the company that would laterbecome Bruker Elemental.

    A lot has changed since those earlydays. A series o innovations hasmade handheld XRF technology anindispensable tool in elds as diverseas PMI (Positive Material Identication),art conservation, scrap sorting,petrochemical industries and the NASAspace exploration program. S1 TURBOSDis the latest in a long line o innovations,representing the rst portable XRFanalyzer to incorporate Silicon DritDetector (SDD) technology. Duringthis development Bruker Elemental hasproduced thousands o handheld XRFinstruments many o which were soldthrough a major OEM relationship.

    When it comes to Positive MaterialIdentication (PMI), the S1 TURBOSDprovides a ast, easy and completelynon-destructive analysis method or

    every metal component. Within thepetrochemical industry, that can applyto everything rom a single componentup to miles o pipeline. This is particularlyimportant in an industry where manyextraordinary events have beentraced to the installation o the wrongmetals, which then leads to astercorrosion rates, or directly to anoutage or explosion.

    Flexible operation

    The Universal mode o operationautomatically selects the appropriate alloyclass and type o calibration providingtruly point and shoot operation. The

    standard calibration o the S1 TURBOSDrapidly provides a traceable analysis.For those alloys which all outside othe range o this standard calibrationthe analyzer automatically selects aundamental parameters (FP) calibrationwhich is ideal or unknown samples.

    The S1 TURBOSD is an instrumentdesigned or use in the real world.The unit works fawlessly regardlesso the sample size or a small distance

    between the sample and the analyzer2.The S1 TURBOSD also comes witha large grade library, which you caneasily update and edit to allow or localgrades or unique names o particularalloys. This can be expanded to includethousands o grades, most o which canbe identied within a second or two3.

    Sorting scrap used to be the job oexperienced metal sorters, but thathas all changed since the introductiono handheld XRF technology. The S1

    TURBOSD provides a ast, reliable wayo separating the valuable content oscrap and the ability to identiy unwantedor tramp elements without the needor highly-trained operators.

    The size o the sample isnt a problem the analyzer can measure everythingrom single wires up to big heat-exchangers and other large structures4.

    Thus, today anyone can easily becomean expert in scrap sorting.

    Application

    Multiple modes

    The Universal Mode o the S1 TURBOSD,automatically selects the alloy type andempirical or FP calibration. This meanseven the most inexperienced operator

    can present virtually any type o metalsample to the analyzer and get anaccurate analysis almost instantly a truly point-and-shoot technology.

    For added fexibility and control, youcan choose between a number omodes when using the S1 TURBOSD. Inaddition to the Empirical and FP modes

    o calibration, you can also opt or DualMode, in which assays are calculatedrom multiple sets o conditions toachieve the best possible detectionlimits. In Auto Mode, the analyzer willdetermine which calibration is best orthe sample in question.

    There is also a straightorward Pass/Failoption, which tests whether the samplematches the selected grades. The displaywill then show a simple Pass (green) or

    Fail (red), which allows or high-speedsorting by untrained operators.

    The S1 TURBOSD contains no radioactivematerial, which means much easierregistration requirements, saetransportation, no disposal restrictions5and no need or a wipe test every sixmonths. For extra security, the systemalso comes in a lockable case and ispassword protected. A sample sensorchecks that the sample is correctly in

    place beore x-rays are generated anda cover is supplied to minimize x-rayexposure when measuring small parts.

    Light Metal Analysis

    In addition to the standard S1 TURBOSD,there is the option o the enhanced S1TURBOSD LE, which comes with smartlight element technology. This is anotherleap orward in handheld XRF, allowingor the analysis o light elements suchas magnesium, aluminum and silicon

    without the need or a vacuum or heliumatmosphere. This enables comprehensiveanalysis o aluminum and titanium alloys,the determination o light elements insteel and copper alloys.
