    The system generates virtually no

    Because there are no fluids, stacks,or containment rings, there are nomaintenance issues from rust corrosion,and no chemical odors to contend with.

    The framing and exterior of the BruestHotCat are stainless steel and virtually

    Ethylene glycol* is a common chemical inindustry, but in a residential environment,it creates risks to people, pets and prop-erty that many utilities would prefer toavoid. Bruest HotCat provides a provenalternative, with a low capital cost forcustomers, neighbors, corporate manage-ment, and their insurance companies.

    *Ethylene glycol is toxic by ingestion and inhalation; lethaldose is 100 cc. It causes initial central nervous systemstimulation followed by depression; it later causes kidneydamage which can cause death.. It is regulated by the EPAas an air toxic on the Hazardous Air Pollutant List, and asa volatile organic compound. It is regulated under theClean Air Act; Comprehensive Environmental Response,Compensation, and Liability Act; and the Toxic SubstancesControl Act.

    Under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning andCommunity Right to Know Act, releases of morethan one pound of ethylene glycol into the air,water, and land must be reported annually and

    entered into the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI).

    Level 1 Automation is BruestsBasic Automatic Control Option.

    It uses a Control Microsystems PLC, with anunlimited number of PID controllers for feed-back control, and an operator interface that ismore compact that the one used in the fullyautomated system. This automation option

    uses a manually-controlled thermostatic gasvalve as the primary temperature control,and adds and takes away heaters when themanual controls require assistance to main-tain the discharge temperature within theoperator-specified window.

    Level 2 Automation is Based onan Allen-Bradley FlexLogix PLCand Allen-Bradley 600 Panel ViewPlus Modular Graphic Terminal.

    This distributed approach to control reducesfield wiring and maximizes performance,because the controller and I/O are close to the

    heater. FlexLogix achieves distributed controlwithout compromises such as reduced pro-cessing power and programming capability.These compromises are common with tradi-tional distributed control solutions.

    FlexLogix also uses compact, DIN-mountedFlex I/O system modules, which have beenfield-proven in thousands of industrialapplications. This control configuration isfully automated, with all process controlsresident in the PLC.

    Bruest components for both automationoptions are widely used in SCADA systems

    worldwide, particularly utility applicationswhere robust performance and accurate dataacquisition is essential.
