MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In Winnipeg we greet the lengthening days and warmer

weather with great enthusiasm and a feeling of pride for

making it through another winter. Most of us say “that

wasn’t too bad, at least it is a dry cold.” For the Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra, the start of spring brings us much

enthusiasm about the season offerings for the coming year,

but it also gives us extra appreciation for the concerts we

are able to attend in the spring.

I am looking forward to hearing Gwen Hoebig and Karl

Stobbe perform Bach’s Double Concerto followed by the

monumental Bruckner’s 9th Symphony. The partnership with Rainbow Stage continues

with a wonderful performance of A Chorus Line, we perform great choral masterpieces

at St. Boniface Cathedral in recognition of the anniversary of the diocese, and we

welcome exciting young pianist Luca Buratto to the WSO. And, of course, we look

forward to a performance with the irrepressible Al Simmons, our local genius.

What else can we anticipate in the months to come? Well, the annual Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra Spring Gala on April 26 will move to the Centennial Concert Hall

and Alloway Hall this year. The event will be connected to an exclusive performance

of the orchestra and cast members from Cirque de la symphonie. Gala events are

wonderful ways to celebrate as a community of WSO supporters, but attending the gala

is not the only way to support the legacy of symphonic music in Winnipeg. You can

enter the Symphony Sweepstakes, make a donation to the WSO Friends or Maestro’s

Circle Programs, or remember the WSO in your estate planning.

Our community would not be able to enjoy the many benefits that a professional

symphony orchestra provides without the generous support of audience members who

purchase tickets, make donations, volunteer in many different ways, and cheer for the

WSO throughout the year. Thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity, and community

minded support of the WSO. You make a difference!

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Concerto for Two ViolinsJohann Sebastian Bachb. Eisenach / March 21, 1685d. Leipzig / July 28, 1750Composed: circa 1720Last WSO performance: 1999;Bramwell Tovey, conductor; Karl Stobbeand Ann Chow, soloists

Bach’s three violin concertos– two for solo violin and thisone for two violins – camefrom his tenure (1717-1723)as Kapellmeister of chamber

music at Anhalt-Cöthen, north of Leipzig. There Bach served the music-loving andappreciative Prince Leopold’s taste forsecular music with a miraculous flow ofinstrumental music that included theBrandenburg Concertos, the four OrchestralSuites, the unaccompanied Suites andSonatas for violin and cello, and the firstbook of The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Astonishingly, one must add “among muchelse”to the story, for scholars haveestimated that a considerable amount ofBach’s music was lost after his death. Manyof Bach’s manuscripts disappeared inneglect by his son Wilhelm Friedemann, who sold and lost important manuscriptsof his father’s to sustain a reckless life.Fortunately,Wilhelm’s younger brother CarlPhilipp Emanuel took loving care of theroughly equal number of copies left tohim. The three violin concertos wereamong them, from at least six which arethought to have been composed.

Bach senior was a skilled violinist, Carlrecalled, and studied Vivaldi’s Italian stylecarefully. The three movements of Bach’sConcerto for Two Violins follow the Italianmodel of fast outer movements and a slowcenterpiece. The solo violins are treated asequals, weaving affecting and dramaticmusical conversation among each other asthe duo takes on the role of “soloist”standing out in relief of the orchestra inthe opening movement’s “ritornello”(returning) form, where episodes arealternately stated and brought back.

The Largo is memorably beautiful, with asimple accompaniment from the orchestrain contrast to its contrapuntal engagementwith the soloists in the other movements.

The closing movement is anotherenergetic ritornello, leaving one withthe feeling that nothing could beadded or subtracted from such asublime display of timing and taste.

Symphony No. 9Anton Brucknerb. Ansfelden / September 4, 1824d. Vienna / October 11, 1896Composed: 1887, 1891- his deathFirst performance of the threecompleted movements: February 11,1903 (Vienna); Ferdinand Löwe,conductor First WSO performance

Bruckner’s massivesymphonies usually hadlong gestation periodsfor the composer, but the nine years he spent

on his Ninth Symphony wasunprecedented. Unfinished at the timeof his death despite a fervent wish tocomplete it, Bruckner began tocompose the Ninth immediately aftercompleting his Eighth Symphony in1887. In 1889, he began to suffer fromdropsy, the same condition that hadafflicted Beethoven. Over the followingtwo years, he was relieved of his dutiesas organ professor at the ViennaConservatory, retiring as professoremeritus in 1891.

As Bruckner’s physical health wasfailing, he was also showing signs ofmental instability. When the greatconductor Hermann Levi declined toperform the recently completedEighth, complaining that he could notcomprehend the work, this threwBruckner into an almost suicidal fit ofdepression, causing a wait of threeyears before returning to work on theNinth while undertaking franticrevisions of the Eighth and some of hisother symphonies.

Bruckner’s religious underpinningbecame an almost manic obsession.During the composer’s last months, hisphysician Dr. Richard Heller reported“Often I found him on his knees inprofound prayer. I stood by andoverheard his naïve, patheticinterpolations in the traditional texts. At times he would suddenly exclaim,‘Dear God, let me get well soon; yousee I need my health to finish theNinth”. Bruckner’s wish was to dedicatethe Ninth to God and said that should

the work remain unfinished, He musttake responsibility.

Bruckner had an obsession with deathand once travelled to Bayreuth to pray atthe graveside of Wagner. While there helost (but later recovered) his manuscriptsfor the Ninth Symphony. One wonderswhy he would bring his only copy on anarduous journey to a cemetery.

Out of all this time and distractionscame three completed movements ofthe Ninth, plus about 75 per cent of afinal movement Bruckner was workingon up to his death. Missing from thefinale was the crucial coda ending. Not ahint of the coda exists, making itimpossible to foresee anythingconclusive as to what his genuine finalmovement would be despite effortsfrom others to complete the movement.

Six years after Bruckner died, his discipleFerdinand Löwe announced a Viennapremiere of the score he had completedfrom the manuscript for the first threemovements, adding Bruckner’s Te Deumas the finale since Bruckner had quotedit in one of the finale’s fragments.Though the audience was spellbound,Löwe’s revisions were extensive andcontroversial and the work had to waituntil 1932 for Bruckner’s original threemovements to be performed at a privateconcert sponsored by the BrucknerSociety.

Many view Bruckner’s Ninth Symphonyas his most affecting creation and anextension of Beethoven’s NinthSymphony in its universal yet personalemotions. Unlike Beethoven, whoseoverall style evolved over the years,Bruckner found his vision early, refiningmany of his signature features from theearlier symphonies and culminating inthe Ninth’s tremendous emotionalimpact, from the massive openingmovement through the demonic scherzoand ending in the adagio’s shatteringoutpouring, which Bruckner called themost beautiful of all his slow movements.Marking one passage in it “Farewell toLife”and scoring in the movement histreasured choir of four Wagner tubas - arich sounding hybrid of baritone hornand French horn in homage to hisrevered Master Richard Wagner – theadagio’s feeling of valediction calls intoquestion any music that could followsuch a sublime statement of thecomposer’s overpowering religious faith.

PROGRAM NOTES

What you are about to see is a truestory. It’s my story.Well, my story andAlexandra’s story. Okay, my story,Alexandra’s story and tonight’s cast ofA Chorus Line’s story…that originatedfrom artists who lived it 43 years ago.

A Chorus Line remains one of the mostimportant pieces of modern theatrebecause it tapped into the love storybetween the artist and their art.Thislove story is so beautiful, heartbreaking and true that it hasbecome forever universal.

As you enjoy this window into thesoul of the dancer, please take amoment to appreciate the risks thesedancers take. They risk their bodies, their relationships and (scariest of all)they risk their hearts. Our art has noobligation to love us back and justlike in life, this love is, more often thannot, unrequited.

So: “Point us toward tomorrow. We did what we had to do.Won’t regret.Won’t forget.Whatwe did for love.”

- Carson Nattrass

Tennessee Williams wrote,“inmemory everything seems tohappen to music.” This appearsto be particularly true andrelevant for the Broadwaydancers interviewed by MichaelBennett on a cold Januarynight, in a New York Citygymnasium in 1975. He askedthem to say their name, age,and why they started dancing.Their gritty, heart-breaking,funny, true stories created thispiece of theatre that ran forsixteen years on Broadway, winning a Pulitzer Prize and theTony for Best Musical.

A Chorus Line lets us in on theindividuality and uniqueness of

the dancers who move asone by the end of theproduction. The career of adancer is unique. It is oftenover in the physical bodybefore it is in the dancer’sheart and soul. A Chorus Lineis a story about makingsacrifices and acceptingchange, both personally andprofessionally; a theme aspertinent and relatable in2018 as it was in 1975.

A Chorus Line was the firstshow I saw on Broadway, andI was forever changed. I amhonoured to share the tellingof this evocative story withCarson, our cast, and theWSO.This show is dedicatedto anyone who has ever putthemselves ‘on the line’; for ajob, for a child, or for love.

- Alexandra Herzog

Three Métis Songs from SaskatchewanMalcolm Forsythb. Pietermaritzburg, South Africa /December 8, 1936d. Edmonton / July 5, 2011Composed: 1975, orchestrated 1976First performance: February 1976;Michael Kymlicka, conductor;Maureen Forrester, soloistLast WSO performance: 1998; BramwellTovey, conductor; Susan Platts, soloist

“Chanson du petit cordonnier”(Song of the Little Shoemaker)

A folk song that exists inmany variants in Canada,Belgium and France, andknown also as Lisette O MaLisette and Galant Retirez

Vous in this setting, it relates the tale of animpetuous young man who falls in loveand goes to his sweetheart's father forpermission to marry her. As he is pennilesshe is accused of trying to marry her for herwealth and his suit is refused. The youngwoman's brother, hearing the story, pleadsthe lovers' case, but to no avail. The loversare grief stricken; tears are shed, for whicha handkerchief is found in the young girl'sbedside table, but only the farewellremains. The final stanza finds the littleshoemaker on horseback, composing hissong.

'L'adieu de la mariée'(A bride's farewell)Here we find a young bride lamenting tothe birds at the riverside of her impendingmarriage. Was it an arranged marriage orwas she the victim of amorous dalliancewith her betrothed? We are not told, butthe cares of marriage and householdchores that go with it weigh heavily as hermother comforts her in her preparations.

Chanson de la grenouillère (Song of the frog plain)Finally, a real Canadian song (the first twoare Canadian versions of very old folksongs from France and Belgium). PierreFaloon, 'the Singer of the Plains', pennedthis one, Chanson de Grenouillere, thenight after the Battle of Seven Oaksbetween the Métis of the NorthwestCompany and the British of the Hudson'sBay Company in 1816. He tells of the brave

warriors of the Bois Brulés who droveoff the cocky British, who’s Governor, was "behaving like an emperor" thatday, the nineteenth of June. Not onlythe Governor, but nineteen of his menwere killed. The song soon becameknown as the Chant National of theMétis , sung far and wide onimportant occasions.”

- Malcolm Forsyth

GloriaFrancis Poulencb. Paris / January 7, 1899d. Paris / January 30, 1963Composed: 1959First performance: January 20, 1961(Boston); Charles Munch, conductor Last WSO performance: 1997;Robert Shaw, conductor

Though raised in areligious family, Poulenchad little concern withfaith until a talentedmusician friend was

killed in an automobile accident in1936.“Pondering on the fragility of ourhuman frame, the life of the spiritattracted me anew,”Poulenc wrote, later rejoining the Church andexpressing his Catholic faith regularlyand enthusiastically. His last threedecades produced significant works onreligious themes, including his Mass,Stabat Mater and Dialogues of theCarmelites.

Poulenc suffered from depressionduring his last five years and turnedeven more intensely to his faith forcomfort. In his Gloria, of 1959,commissioned by the KoussevitzkyFoundation in memory of Serge andNatalie Koussevitzky, Poulenc labelledthe work simply as a “joyous hymn tothe glory of God.” Throughout onefinds the composer’s typically richmelodic vein spiked with his signaturebright wit.

Poulenc chose his texts from thesecond section of the Mass Ordinary:traditional songs from the fifth centurysung by the angels on the night of theNativity in praise of the Christ child. With his typically fastidious attentionto words, Poulenc spent hours recitingthe texts to himself to explore everymusical potential, elevating theirmessages with music that displayed hisremarkable lyrical gifts.

A fanfare opens Gloria, followed byvoices in an amalgam of joy andnostalgia, a favourite Poulenc trait.Thelighthearted “Laudamus te”follows, inwhich Poulenc said he imagined angelsand monks at play.“Domine Deus”and“Domine Deus, Agnus Dei”are movingand serious, separated by the sprightly“Domine Fili unigenite.”The finale “Quisedes ad dexteram Patris” is in threesections, each based on the same text.Earlier material is recalled as the workcloses in prayerful resolution.

RequiemGabriel Fauréb. Pamiers, Ariege / May 12, 1845d. Paris / November 4, 1924Composed: 1887-1888, revised in 1893First performance: January 16, 1888(Paris); conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2005;Yuri Klaz, conductor

Fauré’s distinguishedcareer as an organist andchurch musician began in1866 at Rennes andcontinued on through

several other posts until he becamechief organist at the famous Madeleinein 1896.Though he had composedseveral service pieces during his variouspositions, the Requiem was his first large-scale work in any form.

Fauré began the Requiem in 1887 “justfor the pleasure of it,”but it is thoughtthat the impetus came from the passingof his parents around that time. Severalversions were composed in varyingorchestrations with the final version re-scored for full orchestra in 1900 andpremiered at the Trocadéro Palace inJuly 1900, conducted by Paul Taffanel.

Surprisingly, Fauré was an avowedagnostic. His biographer EmileVuillermoz describes the composer ashaving a natural courtesy andprofessional conscience to mitigate anysense of hypocrisy in writing religiousworks. Fauré therefore fashioned theRequiem as a work to console andcomfort the living rather than as a moreliteral testament of faith, which is thereason he chose to omit the Dies irae(Day of Wrath – The Last Judgement),viewing death “as a happy deliverance,an aspiration toward happinessabove..dominated from beginning toend by a very human feeling of faith ineternal rest.”

Sistema Winnipeg is a program that is getting great resultsfor children in two of Winnipeg’s North End schools.

Sistema Winnipeg offers an opportunity for these children, with the fewest resources and the greatest need, to learnmusic and a variety of life skills through a structuredorchestral program five days a week, at no cost to theirfamilies. The program is entirely funded by the goodwill of the citizens of Winnipeg whose donations have kept the programming going for the past seven years.

Since 2011, Sistema has been growing and improving the lives of many local children –160 are enrolled in thisyear’s program alone.

“Our children now get to experience the kinds ofafter-school activities that children in other middleclass, more affluent areas of the city have access to.Now these kids in the North End have the sameaccess.”

Aaron BenarrochFormer Principal, King Edward School

“The rigors of the program and the high expectationsfor the children have a spin-off effect. The children’sopinions are being heard. These kids are now out inthe community and they are everywhere. They arejust ready to take on the world.”

Peter OrbendoerferFormer Principal, Elwick Community School

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Piano Concerto No. 2 Serge Prokofievb. Sontsovka, Ukraine / April 23, 1891d. Moscow / March 5, 1953Composed: 1912-1913, revised in 1923First performance: September 5, 1913(Pavlosk); A.P. Aslanov, conductor, with composer as soloistLast WSO performance: 2002;Mark Russell Smith, conductor;Mei-Tung Sun, soloist

The St. PetersburgConservatory was never thesame in the wake of thebrash, irreverent 22-year-oldSerge Prokofiev, whose

raging pianistic powers were no less anassault on the Romantic era as was hissavagely original music.Though not anadmitted friend, fellow studentShostakovich wrote that Prokofiev wastotally self-centered. Equipped with adazzling technique, Prokofiev attackedthe piano with steely percussive fury. Hisown music perfectly matched his athleticperforming style and struttingpersonality, as he set out to conquer theworld as a pianist and as a composer.

Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto waspremiered in 1912 at a summer concertwith himself performing. Nurtured onmusic by the likes of Rimsky-Korsakov,the audience was baffled and the criticsfumed. No matter, for Prokofiev hadunbridled confidence and began hisSecond Concerto that winter. Asummertime premiere was planned for1913 at the ironically fashionable resortof Pavlosk, near St. Petersburg.

Where Prokofiev referred to his FirstConcerto as an “ensemble for the soloinstrument with the orchestra,”theSecond showed the piano as dominantwith the orchestra as an adjunct. Evenmore than the First, the Second attacksthe refined sounds of the previouscentury with a special dynamism andvirtuosity.Though the premiere wasgreeted by hisses and catcalls thatProkofiev further egged on with anencore of one of his noisiest solo pieces,he would find success with the SecondPiano Concerto in Paris when he movedthere in 1923.

A broad principal theme in the soloopens the work, giving way to acheeky theme in a quicker tempo. What normally follows in adevelopment and recapitulationsection becomes a gigantic solocadenza, after which the orchestrabrings in the closing coda whosequiet ending recalls the openingmelody.

The Scherzo is a motoric sprint ofperpetual motion where the soloistplays in non-stop octaves.TheIntermezzo that follows has outersections of march-like “ostinato,”with a contrasting gentlecentrepiece.

The finale explodes from the gatewith a theme that returns at theend. In between, the soloist carriesthe show exchanging contrastingmaterial alone and in dialogue withthe orchestra. A sweeping cadenzafollows, the orchestra steals in and, after a brief pause, the musiccharges to the finish line.

Symphony No. 2Sergei Rachmaninoffb. Oneg, Russia / April 1, 1873d. Los Angeles, CA USA / March 28, 1943Composed: 1906-1907First performance: January 26, 1908 (St. Petersburg) conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2008;Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor

The premiere ofRachmaninoff’s FirstSymphony in 1897 wasso poorly received, itplunged the 24-year-old

composer into a two-year state ofdepression in which he composednothing. In 1900, he began consultingDr. Nicholas Dahl, a hypnotherapistwhose techniques of auto-suggestionrestored the composer’s enthusiasmfor work.Within a year Rachmaninoffproduced the highly successful SecondPiano Concerto. International famefollowed and by 1905 he wasrenowned in Russia not only as acomposer and pianist but as a front-ranking conductor.

Rachmaninoff recognized thetrappings of activity on his multi-

talents, stating that when he did onething he could not do anything else.Wishing to compose more, he soughta quiet place to work and in early 1906moved his family to Dresden, a choiceinspired by a previous visit where hehad heard a memorable performanceof Wagner’s Die Meistersinger.

Keeping a low profile in Dresden,Rachmaninoff confided to his visitingfriend Alexander Siloti that he wasworking on a new symphony to makea more successful attempt in thegenre. Siloti invited Rachmaninoff toconduct the premiere in St.Petersburg, announcing it to the pressbefore the composer agreed.Rachmaninoff led the premiere, introduced it to Moscow a week laterand then to Warsaw. All the audiencesresponded enthusiastically as they doto this day for this grand romanticsymphony that has become his bestloved purely orchestral work. It alsobecame in important item onRachmaninoff’s first American tour in1909.

The opening movement is governedby a single figure, the alteration of anote and another a step lower that isdeveloped throughout themovement. Notable are the workingsof the motive rather than statement ofa “big tune,”for which we have to waituntil later.

Galloping strings introduce the horntheme in the scherzo secondmovement. Over clarinet arpeggios, the strings provide the longdescending melodic line absent fromthe first movement for the centraltheme, changing direction for thereturn of the opening motive.

The Adagio opens with a soaringmelody in the strings that gives way toa spacious clarinet solo. Notable ishow the lengths of the motives andmelodies prepare for the impact of themain love theme when it appears andhow it is distributed among the soloinstruments in the orchestra.

The finale begins in the rhythm of anItalian tarantella but soon turns to aghostly march introduced by timpani. Then, a surging second theme that issignature Rachmaninoff. Earliermaterial returns and all the elementscoalesce for a life-affirming close.
