PHC 6540 Public Mental Health (USF College of Public Health).
This graduate level course introduces the organization, structure, and management of public
mental health organizations, emphasizing the history, current structure, and future of the
community mental health movement, as well as collaborative efforts between not-for-profit and
for-profit mental health/substance abuse organizations.
PHC 6541 - Mental Health Administration & Policy (USF College of Public Health).
This course presents the general principles of management theory, methods, administrative
processes, and organizational structure of public and private mental health organizations in
hospital and ambulatory care settings.

PHC 6539 - Foundations in Adolescent Behavioral Health (USF College of Public Health).
This course focuses on adolescent behavioral health through a detailed examination of the
interaction of epidemiology, disease surveillance, social neuroscience, environmental
vulnerability, pharmacology, and developmental risk & resiliency that affect the lives of
adolescent populations at risk for drug use and mental disorders. The benefits of service learning
with perspectives on adult learning theory, distance learning, and blended learning methods will
be highlighted. This course is the first course in the new 15 credit Graduate Certificate in
Translational Research in Adolescent Behavioral Health. This course is also an elective graduate
course in the Graduate Studies in Behavioral Health Program, which is “housed” in the
Behavioral Health Concentration in the Department of Community & Family Health, USF
College of Public Health.
PHC 6543 – Foundations in Behavioral Health Systems (USF College of Public Health).
This graduate course covers the organization, financing, and delivery of behavioral health
(including mental health and substance abuse) services in the United States, including law,
policy, and ethics in mental health services delivery. Taught both traditional (in-class) version
and distance learning (web-based) version of the course.
PHC 6728 Translational Research Methods in Adolescent Behavioral Health.
This course provides an overview of quantitative and qualitative research methods,
measurement models and skills of research relevant to translational research and the core
principles of implementation science and the transfer/translation of knowledge from the
research setting to clinical practice settings. Course material will place special emphasis on
skills of research for developing translational researchers, and strategies for being culturally
competent, and career-minded in the mediation, cultivation and development of translational
research skills, and the implementation of evidence-based practices. Emphasis is placed on
service needs of children and adolescents with co-occurring disorders as the population of
interest.
PHC 6934 - Behavioral Health Programs & Policies (USF College of Public Health).
This graduate level course examines programmatic, organizational and policy issues in
behavioral health services organizations in the United States. Emphasis is placed upon
programmatic and service delivery concerns within agencies serving the needs of special
populations-at-risk.
HSC 6552 – Community-Based Prevention in Behavioral Health (USF College of Public
Health).
This graduate level course examines behavioral health prevention, promotion, and education
initiatives and their application to selected at-risk populations.
MHS 6645 – Mental Health Informatics (USF College of Public Health).
This graduate course introduces mental health informatics, how informatics expands both
provider and patient access to health care, with an emphasis on information and knowledge
management. Current applications in informatics are presented, including bibliographic,
numeric, & geographic databases. The status of behavioral health programs will be reviewed.

MHS 4002/HSC 4933 – Behavioral Health Systems Delivery (USF College of Behavioral &
Community Sciences and the USF College of Public Health).
This undergraduate course introduces students from public health, psychology, social work, and
other social and behavioral sciences majors to the basic concepts in the examination of alcohol,
drug use, and mental disorders from a public health perspective. The focus of the course
includes basic organization, financing, services delivery, and concepts of basic prevention and
early intervention for individuals in need of behavioral health services.
