educational video, which focuses
on and celebrates the cultural
diversity that exists in Gateshead.
The video features young people
from Gateshead who have been
engaged in work with Positive
Images and The Avenues Project
to explore issues of cultural
diversity and racism from a local
perspective. The video was filmed
over several weeks during the
Spring 2003, and is unique in
the sense that it captures the real
views, opinions and feelings of
a diverse group of people who
have one thing in common; they
feel passionate about the place
they live, they feel diversity should
be celebrated, and that racism
is unacceptable in the local
community.

the rich variety of sounds, styles, ideas
and beliefs that form part of our multi-
faith and multi-cultural community in
Gateshead and Newcastle.
Local young people discuss life in
Gateshead relating to issues of cultural
diversity and challenging racism. This video
was funded through the Home Office and
was facilitated by Positive Images and the
Avenues Community Education Project

performances, ideas and opinions
from a real cross-section of
our local community. It also
documents the creation and
purpose of the Accents music CD.
Accents is a celebration of the
divergent faiths and cultures
that we find in the North East of
England in the 21st Century. It
brings together musicians from
around the world who have settled
in the area along with those who
have lived here all their lives. It
also provides an insight into the
meaning of devotional material
that forms part of our local faith
communities’ traditions.ACCENTS and ACCENTS LIVE
were made possible by Central
Government Community Cohesion
funding through Gateshead
