“Coming Home!” Mark your calendar! I know so many of you travel during the summer, but we want to encourage you to plan to be with us on picnic Sunday, September 9. Here are three great reasons:

1) We are going to have a UNITY service that day. Our hope is that folks who normally attend the 9 o’clock or 11:10 service will be able to worship together at 10:00 AM. This service will include special music and we hope you will join us.2) After the service, we will head to the refurbished Fellowship Hall for its dedication. You may remember, a group held a “Trivia Night” to raise money to refurbish the room. The updated Fellowship Hall will be newly painted, with new chairs, tables, floor and an upgraded AV System. We look forward to celebrating its completion on September 9 at 11:00 AM.3) Following the dedication, all are invited for food and fellowship as we kick-off our programmatic year. We will have Jordan’s BBQ, great music, fun for the family, and fantastic fellowship. We will also be taking a church family photo. Plan for your college students to behome that weekend and reserve your spot for a new Church Directory photo to be taken.

You won’t want to miss it! If you know of former members who have moved away, that we should invite back, please let Marilyn Baxter know (members@brownsonchurch.org). Also, we will be doing a new church directory whichyou will hear more about. We hope that through God’s help, we can continue to unite as a church family.I am so thankful for this church family.P.S. Dear Pastor Hage and Brownson Team,We wanted to write and thank you for being such a welcoming and spiritually refreshing church home. Our relocation became accelerated so unfortunately, we will not be able to say farewell in person. We will soon be settled and our first baby is due soon.

We were blessed to find Brownson in 2016, especially because I was deployed almost immediately.Although the congregation is larger than my hometown church, Brownson felt just as inviting, replete with quality, kind and talented people. Brownson facilitated growth in our faith and fortified us through challenges. I will remember fondly this year’s Easter Sunday service with the glorious music. We had to control our giggling as the baby started kicking and twirling around on cue with the percussion. It was aspecial moment in a special place.

May God continue to bless you all as you live and carry out the Brownson mission.

Once again we are working with Lifetouch®, whose purpose is “to share life’s joy through photographs.” Our experience with them in 2015 was so positive that we requested they send us some of the same photographers. There is no charge to have your picture taken and those who do will receive a free 8 x 10 photo and a copy of the Directory. Yes, you will have a “typical directory type” photo taken, but you will also have the opportunity to have any kind of personal photograph taken, which will not appear in the directory. Maybe with a soccer ball or golf club, your dog, or in a uniform or special outfit. This would be the kind of photograph you would like to have for yourself or to give to others.Lifetouch® is offering discounts on the purchase of photos. Bring a non-perishable food item to your photo session and receive $5 off, Seniors and Military receive 20% off and there will be a $10 coupon for all members.Photographers will be at Brownson during September and scheduling an appointment will be easy. The gift of a prayer shawl is wonderful way to show that you care.Shawls made by our ministry may be given to anyone who has a need. Smaller versions known as “pocket” prayer shawls are also available—these can easily be slipped into someone’s hand or mailed. All have been prayed over while being made and blessed when finished. What a simple way to remind someone of God’s loving and healing presence.Would you like to participate in this caring ministry? Through friendship and practical support, the Visitation Ministry visits members, emails and calls Brownson members and friends who are homebound or are living in local retirement communities and unable to regularly attend worship services on Sundays.Enjoy food and fellowship and find out if our Visitation Ministry would be a good fit for you. Visitors are assigned someone to visit once a month; and you can select a date and time that is convenient for all. Visits usually take no more than 30 minutes.We look forward to having you join us! Deepening Suellen Nesbitt: 2018 Recipient of Honorary Lifetime Membership Award

PW is about Bible study and mission, but it is also about FELLOWSHIP and FRIENDSHIP.

At its May 21 meeting, Presbyterian Women awarded the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award to Suellen Nesbitt. Suellen grew up in Princeton, West Virginia. She is a graduate of the Alexandria Virginia School of Nursing. She has been married to her husband Tom since 1966, and they have three sons and six grandchildren.Since joining Brownson, Suellen has been very active. She chaired the Treasures and Trinkets Fundraiser for Presbyterian Women. She is an elder, an usher, has been Moderator of PW, a Circle Leader, helped in the development of the Brownson Learning Center, sets up coffee between services, was a co-leader of one of the Lenten series and serves on the Christian Growth Ministry Team.Congratulations to this most worthy recipient!

Interested in singing in the choir? There are no Wednesday evening choir rehearsals during the summer, however come and join the Summer “Instant” Choir on Sunday mornings! The choir will sing at the 11:10 AM service during the month of July. Meet in the choir room at 10:40 AM, and join us as we rehearse the music for the service. All are welcome!For the month of August, music during worship will consists of small ensembles, solos, duets, trios, etc.If you are interested and willing to serve during August, please contact John Tyson: music@brownsonchurch.org. All youth, including rising sixth graders, are invited to volunteer this summer at Vacation Bible School.Those who volunteer are invited to join the Youth Group on a trip to the amusement park, Carowinds,on July 13. Register with Rachel before July 8.High School youth are invited to Montreat, a Christian retreat just for youth groups, July 21-28. The costis $375 per student, and scholarships are available. Sunday, September 9 is our church picnic and “Coming Home” celebration. We are having a reunion and the choir will be made up of people who have ever sung in the choir at Brownson. Brownson Learning Center completed its first full year of service! It seems like just yesterday that we opened up our doors, and now we are closed for summer break! What a privilege it has been to serve the 63 children that we have been called to love this year. We have had so much fun loving, learning and playing, and we are so incredibly thankful to Brownson Church and all of the generous sponsors and volunteers who helped make our first year such an amazing success! We could not have done it without the support of all of you! So, THANK YOU!We are looking forward to expanding for the 2018-2019 school year and serving approximately 88 children. God is so good!

This summer, three student interns have been added to Brownson’s staff team. Abby Ostlund, George Morris and Lucy Kimbell. They will assist in a num-ber of areas in the church and learn about Christian leadership.

On June 13, five Brownson Youth completed their six-month Global Leaders Class led by Rachel Cheneyand John Hage. The original plan was to complete their course with a Mission Trip to Nicaragua. Due tounrest in the area, their trip was postponed until next summer. In lieu of the trip, the youth plan to hold a car wash fundraiser to support the non-profit. All funds will benefit AMOS Health and Hope, which offers local healthcare and clean water to surrounding urban and rural families. The political instability in the area has significantly affected the non-profit and the Global Leaders Class is dedicated to helping them with prayers and financial support. This year marked the eighth year that Brownson has packaged meals for Rise Against Hunger. We raised our goal from 20,000 meals to 25,000 in 2018 and met our goal! In just under two hours, 184 volunteers packaged 25,056 nutritious meals that will be distributed to partners in countries around the world. One packaged meal will feed a family of six, so the meals that we prepared will feed 150,336 people! What a wonderful mission this has become for our church family. Every year, there is a spirit in the Fellowship Hall that cannot be described. But once you enter the room, it is almost instantly felt! Young and old, standing, sitting, measuring, filling, weighing, sealing, boxing, dancing, singing, laughing…the list goes on and on! There truly is a job for everyone. If you were not able to join the fun this year, plan to be a part of this growing ministry next year! A huge thank you to the Meal Ministry Team for providing a delicious lunch beforehand! Our congregation is so blessed!

NSMoore Buddies Mentoring Program has been serving the children of Moore County for over 20 years. We are always looking for adult mentors from Brownson who can spare a few hours a month to make a lifelong impact on a child’s life. Many children in Moore County are impoverished and in desperate need of a loving adult to help guide them through life. The one-on-one mentoring program focuses on the relationship between the adult and the child and encourages the child to make positive life choices and increased social skills. Our mentors look beyond the surface and see the potential that is in each child and help that child to see themselves as capable of being successful and making a contribution to the world. We work with ages 7-17 and are looking for mentors who love children and want to change the world, one child at a time.Here are two other ways you can help Moore Buddies:

1) Assist by donating school supplies to their 12th Annual “Stuff the Bus” on July 20-21 (from 9-5 PM) and on July 22 from 12-4:30 PM in the Walmart parking lot. Volunteers from Moore Buddies Mentoring, Boys and Girls Club, local school personnel, Kiwanis, Brownson, and other community organizations will request donations. Over $16,000 in school supplies were given to Moore County Schools last year. We hope to surpass that number this year!2) Come out for the Rigby Golf Tournament to benefit Moore Buddies Mentoring Program! The tournament will be held August 11. “School Pantry Program”Brownson was involved in the Sandhills Food Bank “School Pantry Program” during the 2018 school year. Brownson church members sponsored the program by finding volunteers each month to pack the school pantry boxes. Together, we were able to feed 930 individuals and 300 households from Hamlet Elementary School. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with this wonderful program. This volunteer opportunity will begin again in September and we’ll need more volunteers the second Tuesday of every month starting at 1:15 PM for approximately 2 hours. The Little Libraries at Northern Moore Family Resource Center, a preschool, after school and summer camp for children in the Northern part of our county, is in need of book donations. Currently, additional adult books are needed. If you would like to donate gently used books, they can be placed in “NMFRC Little Libraries” box at the Information Center outside of Fellowship Hall.

Family Promise® of Moore County provides shelter, meals and services to homeless women with children in their custody. Brownson will host Family Promise the week of July 2-5. If you can help, contact Susan Bellew from Family Promise (910-944-7149) and maybe ask a friend that hasn’t helped before. Meals and evening hosts are needed each night.

Support Sandhills Children’s Center by participating in their 11th annual Bocce Ball Bashfundraiser on Saturday, August 18 at the new location, National Athletic Village on Airtool Drive in Southern Pines. Put together a team, name your team, and plan a tailgate for this fun day. Team check in is 8:45 AM. All proceeds benefit children who have special developmental needs. This weekend event will also serve to launch a newly forming Theatre & Worship Arts Ministry Team for our congregation. The Directory for Worship reminds us that “Healing was an integral part of the ministry of Jesus which the church has been called to continue as one dimension of its concern for the wholeness of people. Through services for wholeness, the church enacts in worship its ministry as a healing community.”

This three-part series will explore the hope Christ brings when we feel; “battered by the waves”; the connection we experience when we gather at the Lord’s Supper; and the blessings of healing prayer and community that create wholeness.

Services for wholeness and healing are provided for in the Presbyterian Book of Order and Book of Common Worship. Prayer is a vital element in these services since this is essentially a time of waiting in faith upon God. The series concludes August 12, when our traditional morning worship will include elements of such a service of healing and wholeness. These services are under the direction of Associate Pastor, Rev. Karen Allen. Elders of the church will also participate. Music, hymns, sermon, as well as both silent and spoken prayer will be included. At the conclusion of the service, enacted prayer will beoffered in the form of laying on of hands and anointing with oil, if requested and desired. We are seeking to be faithful, opening a door for renewal and wholeness. We hope you will join us on these special Sundays as we step out of the way so the Spirit might lead us in fresh ways.
