A recent trip to Washington re_­vea1ed to Captain Lecmard that President Truman was det-ennined not to appease or compromise with Jolm L. Lewis, as his predecessor had done. Lewis appeared to have a cq~ar complex. Yet the Mis­souri dander was up. Truman was stubborn. He declined to accept the ,advise of Attorney General Tom C. Cla·rk and Reconversion Direc­tor ·-John R.· Steelman, both Of whom suggest~d appeasement.
