U01 MH106660 (Johnson and Weinstock) 10/1/15-9/30/19 Role: PI NIH (NIMH, OBSSR) and NIJ $6,817,508 (TC) Suicide risk reduction in the year following jail release: the SPIRIT Trial (Suicide Prevention Intervention for at-Risk Individuals in Transition) The SPIRIT Trial is a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and mechanisms of the Safety Plan intervention in reducing suicide events among 800 individuals in the year after jail release. This application was submitted as an R01, but was converted to a U01 because of its size, visibility, and impact. It is the largest suicide RFA NIMH has ever funded.

U54 MD011227 (Furr-Holden) 7/20/16-2/28/21 Role: Co-I (until 11/21/16) NIH (NIMHD) $10,689,313 (TC) The Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions To establish an NIMHD Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center (TCC) for health disparities research on chronic disease prevention to be based in Flint, Michigan. The TCC will strengthen community-engaged research on multilevel interventions to target lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet, and substance use. Our initiatives will reduce health inequities in Flint, Michigan and provide promising insights to promote translational approaches across the nation.

16. U54 MD011227: D-I Core (Johnson) 7/20/16-2/28/21 Role: PI (until 11/21/16) NIH (NIMHD) The Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions: Dissemination and Implementation Science Core

To conduct dissemination and implementation research and research dissemination. The Core will serve as the communication hub of the Center and will contribute to scientific knowledge about how to overcome barriers to the adoption, integration, and sustainment of evidence-based multilevel interventions, particularly those examined in Center research projects.

17. U54 MD011227-Project 1 (Johnson-Lawrence) 7/20/16-6/30/21 Role: Co-I (until 11/21/16) NIH (NIMHD) Public health approaches to prevent and reduce obesity and cardiovascular disease: The “Church Challenge” to create healthier communities This project will (1) examine the effectiveness of a community-designed, community-based, multilevel physical activity and diet intervention (the Church Challenge) relative to enhanced treatment as usual among 770 people in 30 primarily African-American Flint area churches using a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design, randomized by church; (2) conduct longitudinal and process evaluations of promoting church engagement in policy advocacy to improve health land use in Flint; and (3) evaluate church-level and individual-level sustainment of behavior change. This intervention was created by the community churches for the community churches. We are not aware of another faith-involved intervention RCT that has involved a community-policy level or that has used churches to drive change at that policy level.

18. U54 MD011227-Project 2 (Furr-Holden) 7/20/16-6/30/21 Role: Co-I (until 11/21/16) NIH (NIMHD) Implementation of multilevel interventions to address substance use This multi-level Hybrid Type III randomized implementation trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a multilevel implementation approach to promote reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance of evidence-based individual, family, and community level substance use interventions to reduce behavioral health disparities in minority communities such as Flint. A total of 32

sites will be selected, who can enroll at least 105 families with substance use over the course of the trial. This will result in an estimated 3,360 families served/enrolled over the project period. Evidence-based substance use interventions being implemented include Peer Recovery Coaching, the Strengthening Families program, and a media campaign.

19. Public Health Global Impact Initiative (Sousa) 7/15/16 - Role: Co-I Funder: Michigan State University To provide funding to hire up to 6 new mid-career to senior tenure-track research faculty to expand the research capacity of MSU’s public health division in Flint. Researchers will be hired in the areas of (1) behavioral health intervention, implementation, and policy research, and (2) research on services and interventions for children exposed to lead.

NIH/NIDA Lifespan/Brown Criminal Justice Research Program on Substance Use and HIV Involvement with the criminal justice system, substance use, and infection with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are syndemic in the United States. Despite this public health crisis, there is a relative dearth of clinical research aimed at improving treatment outcomes among CJ populations. To address this gap and increase the number and capacity of clinical scientists working with CJ populations, we have established this clinical research training program based at the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and in collaboration with the Brown Program in Public Health.

NIH/NIMH The Brown Initiative in HIV and AIDS Clinical Research for Minority Communities To train the next generation of minority researchers to address the challenges of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV, particularly in minority (especially African-American) communities. This proposal includes a stronger focus on community-engaged research. We aim to train the next cadre of investigators to conduct interdisciplinary research that responds to the social, behavioral and structural factors that contribute to racial disparities in HIV infection in the most heavily impacted communities of the US, particularly in the South and in inner city settings.

CDC/NCIPC Preventing sexual aggression among high school boys To conduct a randomized controlled trial with a sample of 1200 10th grade boys to demonstrate efficacy of each intervention in reducing rates of sexual aggression, dating violence involvement, and related risk/protective factors over a 6-month follow-up relative to a dose- and attention-matched General Health Promotion control group.

1. R01 DAXXXXXX Stein (submitted 2/5/16) Role: Co-I Supportive Others Furthering Aftercare (SOFA) for persons with opioid use

disorder in short-term detoxification We propose to conduct a fully-powered randomized clinical trial evaluating the

efficacy of a two-session dyadic intervention (Supportive Other Furthering Aftercare; SOFA) the SOFA intervention for persons with opioid use disorder who have entered inpatient detoxification. Goals are to reduce post-detox opiate use and promote engagement in substance use treatment aftercare.
