y Rin Porter As we have been studying Todd
ounty cemeteries, we keep com-g across the term “Zion” in theames of churches and their
accompanying cemeteries. Thereare several Zions and it is often dif-ficult to determine which churchbuilding and which plot of groundis meant.
“Zion” has many meanings andreferents in the world’s major reli-gions. Zion is a place name oftenused as a synonym for“Jerusalem,” and refers to a specif-ic mountain near Jerusalem wherea fortress stood, also named Zion, that was conquered by King David. The term later was used to refer toan area within the city of Jerusalem where the fortress waslocated, and then to refer toSolomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, the city itself, and the world tocome, or heaven, in Christianbelief. It is used in both the Oldand New Testaments of theChristian Bible, and is mentioned108 times in the Hebrew Bible. InIslamic tradition, it is also used asa name for Jerusalem, and isthought by some scholars to referalso to Mecca. (www.wikipedia.com<http://www.wikipedia.com> )
In addition, the Jewish longingfor Zion, starting with the deporta-tion and enslavement of Jews dur-ing the Babylonian captivity<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonian_captivity> that ended withMoses’ leading them out of Egypt, was adopted as a metaphor byChristian black slaves<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery> in the United StatesContinued on page 16
