PREFACE:
The Broward County Band Directors Association (BCBDA) is a professional organization
composed of the Band Directors from Broward County schools. It is funded by dues paid to its
parent organization, the Broward Music Educators Association, and by proceeds from booster
clubs and outside vendors. Every year the BCBDA provides county band students the unique
opportunity to perform in an Honors Band composed of their peers. Participation is by
audition or nomination only. This handbook provides the information and forms needed for
Directors and their students to participate in an All County Honors Band Concert.
PURPOSE:
The All County Honors Band offers every Broward County School the opportunity to be
represented in a well-organized musical event. Students are exposed to exciting, challenging
music, and the various teaching techniques of guest conductors. The band gives students an
opportunity to compare the quality of their musical skills with those of other students. Each
student who participates gains valuable practice and performance skills while performing high
quality musical literature. Students may use these skills to enhance their individual band
programs.
OVERVIEW:
The BCBDA Co-Chairs(s) is (are) responsible for organizing and supervising the All-County
Honors Bands. This includes updating and processing forms and the handbook, securing
clinicians, dates, sites, and equipment for all auditions, rehearsals, and concerts, tabulating
audition results, communicating with the Directors, and maintaining the bank account. The
county Band Directors are responsible for attending meetings, processing forms, assisting with
auditions, and supervising students. Students audition for the bands and are placed as needed
to fulfill each of the bands' instrumentation needs. At least one student from every school that
participates will be chosen, except jazz band due to the small number in the ensemble.
Audition materials are selected from the Florida Bandmasters Association All State Audition
Requirements or are written by the district. Students who are chosen receive the necessary
forms and music to attend night rehearsals and an all-day rehearsal. Guest clinicians are hired
to rehearse and conduct all of the All County Honor Bands. An evening public performance of
all Honor Bands occur on the date of the all-day rehearsal.

DIRECTOR OBLIGATIONS:
In order for a student to participate, the student's Band Director must be a paid BMEA/BCBDA
member. Membership is $30.00 and must be sent with the invoice included below to Robert
Todd at Bayview Elementary. Checks are made out to BMEA. Please be sure to indicate the
appropriate component group.
Band Directors must attend all activities, including auditions, rehearsals, and concerts to
supervise their participating students. If it is not possible for the Director to attend, a letter
signed by the school Principal assigning supervisory responsibility must be on file with the
CoChairs(s) before the effected audition, rehearsal or concert. A parent cannot be assigned
this responsibility unless they are a School Board of Broward County employee. If a Director
is to miss the audition, the supervisor must be proficient to help with adjudication. Directors
or their designee are to sign in at the rehearsals for confirmation and remain in attendance
until their students are picked up. Any school not having proper supervision at an event may
have their students disqualified. The Director’s Principal will be notified of the situation.
The four statements below are common for all BMEA component groups:
1. The director or official designee must be in attendance until their students are picked up
from the All County rehearsals/concerts.
2. Since BMEA works in cooperation with the Broward County School Board, BMEA Director
membership is required for participation in the All County events.
3. ALL participants/Directors/schools (public, charter & private) will be required to follow all
Broward County School Board Policies as it pertains to the All County events.
4. Due to the Jessica Lunsford Act, all Directors must be cleared at a Level I status. Any Director
who will be alone in a room with a student (i.e. auditions) must be cleared at a Level II status.
5
FORMS:
Directors must accurately fill out the All County Band REGISTRATION Form and return it to
one of the BCBDA Co-Chairs by the deadline indicated on the form. The form must be
completed on computer, printed out, and signed by both the Director and the Principal.
Note: In case of emergency, the participation agreement and the trip authorization forms
should be in the Director's possession, or their designee, at all functions. The director is
responsible for following their school’s BCPS field trip procedure/policy when having students
participate in BCBDA events.

ADJUDICATION:
A. Adjudication will be handled by the participating Band Directors. Directors who do not
attend audition night will not be able to have students selected for honor bands.
B. A two/three-judge format will be used, both listening to scales, prepared, and sight-reading.
This format may be altered for smaller sections at the discretion of the BCBDA Co-Chairs.
C. Each judge will tabulate the total score for each individual audition and submit these totals
to the BCBDA Co-Chairs immediately following the auditions. The personnel for each band will
be determined from this information. Audition results will be compiled by computer and sent
to the membership as soon as the Co-Chairs are satisfied that it is fair and accurate.
D. Students who audition on multiple instruments must perform a complete audition on each
instrument. Students must indicate a preference, upon registration, if they are accepted on
more than one instrument.
E. Any student who is not present to perform at their scheduled audition time will forfeit their
audition. (Exceptions are at the discretion of the BCBDA Co-Chairs).
F. Directors are to advise students that only auditioning students are allowed in the audition

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT BAND:
The All County requirements will be the same as the 2020-2021 All State requirements without
the “Technical Exercise.” The prepared exercise will be Ex. 1 “Lyrical Exercise” of the All State
requirements.
Major Scales per current All State requirements and Sight-reading are also part of the audition.
HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT BANDS:
Note Change to be voted on by membership 2020-2021: There will be two audition based high
school concert bands. The 9th and 10th Grade Concert Band and 11th and 12th Grade Symphonic
Band.
Note Change to be voted on by membership 2019 – 2020: The All County requirements will be
the same as the 2020-2021 9th/10th All State requirements without the “Technical Exercise.”
The prepared exercise will be Ex. 1 “Lyrical Exercise” of the All State requirements.
Note Change as voted by membership on 8/16/2017: Students will use a 9th and 10th
previously used All-State etude for their prepared piece/etude. However, this etude will not be
one seen by any current high school student (due to the rotation of the etudes). This will allow
for us to continue to hold students to All State standards; be seen more fair as it is geared to
younger students and will be neutral or new to all.
Major Scales per current All State requirements and Sight-reading are also part of the audition.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLD ORCHESTRA: Temporary: there will be NO band students in Gold
Orchestra for the current year.
Students interested in being considered for this ensemble must be indicated in the online
Audition Form. The Gold Orchestra facilitator will notify select students chosen for All County
High School Concert Band if they are needed for the orchestra.
Note: High School students who are interested in participating in the All County Honors Gold
Orchestra will be chosen from the top students that audition for band. Please be sure to
indicate on the online Audition Form if your students are auditioning for: BAND ONLY or
