Broward College’s Village Square dinner series continued inFebruary, and brought together several important communitymembers to participate in a non-partisan discussion on thetopic of implicit bias.

“Unconscious Bias: Racism You Can’t See (But You Can Feel)”was moderated by Eugene Pettis, co-founder of Haliczer Pettis &Schwamm and featured panelists Osamudia James, professor oflaw at the University of Miami School of Law and Henry Mack,associate dean of academic affairs at Broward College.

BROWARD COLLEGE MAKING HEADLINES

Broward College's online program is being recognized foroffering an affordable education for students near and far.OnlineU, a website which studies affordability for onlinecolleges, ranks Broward College as the tenth most affordablein the United States. It's the only one from Florida to makethe list of 25 colleges.e schools on the list had annual tuition ranging from$3,450 to $8,400; Broward College charges $6,756. To be onthe list, a college must offer at least 10 fully online degreeprograms across multiple subjects.

Broward.edu Goes Mobile:Broward College LaunchesRe-Designed Siterough the years, students have asked for a website thatcould be accessed on any platform — including a smartphone, tablet, or desktop browser.

Broward College’s website recently was redesigned andmobile optimized — with every creative element and feature extensively researched,and implemented with usability in mind.

e College plans to continue pushing forward with enhancements providing easy accessto information students need most from any location, and on any device.

ConnectingStudents to CareersNew college students oen find it difficultto navigate the various career optionsavailable. To ease this transition, andconnect students to future careers,Broward College recently held a CareerSummit for nearly 600 local area highschool students. Last fall, Broward College administereda Career Coach exercise to several areaschools, which included a careerassessment. Career Coach is a tool thatBroward College acquired to assiststudents identify a potential career. Itprovides current local wage data,employment opportunities, job postings,and associated education and training.Using this information, the Collegeinvited participating students to theCareer Summit to explore the pathwaysthat the career assessment determined tobe relevant to their interests. During theinteractive sessions, students had theopportunity to work with faculty andindustry professionals to betterunderstand the various in-demandcareers available. Broward College is a leader in deployingthe career pathways model. All degreeprograms at the College are nowstructured in one of eight careerpathways that contain related fields.

Debate Team State Champs

Broward College is excited to showcase its academic all-stars, and recognize studentswho have attained a high level of success, achieving the level of President’s List, Dean’sList, and Honor Roll. To be eligible for these academic awards, students must be in good academic standingand carry 12 or more college credit semester hours. President’s List students are recog-nized as obtaining a 4.0 grade point average; Dean’s List students are recognized asobtaining a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.99; and Honor Roll students are recog-nized as obtaining a grade point average of 3.25 to 3.49. Broward College's Speech and Debate Team recently finished first in debate sweepstakesand third overall at the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA)’s2016 State Tournament, which was held February 4-6 at the Florida State College atJacksonville. Juan Igarzabal and Adarris May finished first in Parliamentary Debateand also closed out Lincoln-Douglas debate by finishing first and second.

North Campus Shares Insights on Past Year

George Masforroll Retires

Consistent with annual recommendations,President J. David Armstrong, Jr. andProvost Dr. Linda Howdyshell advocatedthat continuing contracts remain aCollege-supported initiative for BrowardCollege professors, and endorsed elevenfull-time faculty for continuing contracts.is is the eighth consecutive yearBroward College has recommendedfaculty members for continuing contracts.

Professors who demonstrate theircommitment to providing students withacademic excellence at a high levelconsistently are recommended andapproved for continuing contracts.

George Masforroll was recognized at the February Board of Trusteesmeeting for his more than thirty years of service. Masforroll beganworking for the College in 1984 as the bookstore warehouse managerand eventually moved into overseeing printing and other areas as theassociate vice president of auxiliary services, but he was best knownfor his famous mustache.

During the Board of Trustees meeting students, faculty and staff at BrowardCollege North Campus presented an overview of the many accomplishmentsand points of pride from the past year.

A number of students from StudentGovernment and social organizationsshared fun updates about campus lifefollowing a video highlighting the year.In addition, campus presidentDr. Avis Proctor presented Insights,an annual newsletter to the boardand attendees.

Aer the presentation students had the opportunity to provide suggestions oncampus improvements and ask the board for support on issues affecting campuslife including parking lot flooding, additional lighting to make campus moresecure for female students, and a longer rest period between classes for thediscussion and processing of information. Students are proud of their campusand also would like to see the classrooms and facilities held to a higherstandard of maintenance, which is an initiative Broward College currentlyis working on as it has revisited and revised its contracts with cleaningvendors at North Campus.
