Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2020
[ 2 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH
Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.
(Romans 8:26-27)
These are words that we heard in the second reading a few Sundays ago.
These are words that I would have heard at least a dozen times in the
past 50 years at Mass. Because of the way our cycle of scripture readings
is organized for proclamation at Mass, I am certain that it occurs once every 3 years, if not
more.
There is a certain divine genius to this organizational mode. Although we may hear the same
words every three years, my ears as a thirty-year-old interpreted them quite differently than
my ears did at this time of my life. And this is certainly true for many of us.
My younger self tended to see these words as permission to remain silent in the face of mystery.
And in many ways profound silence is an appropriate form of prayer. After all, God knows what
is in our hearts before we ourselves do. So, I would often pray with what I would read in
scripture, and what I have experienced in life, and offer God thanks and praise - but with
minimal petition or commentary.
This has changed significantly for me during these past four months. My anxiety about safety
in the midst of the pandemic, and my concern for the health and well-being of others, has made
me seek out ways of praying for comfort and protection.
Although I have always known certain prayers because of having memorized them through the
years, I have tended to favor meditative and spontaneous prayer. Now, however, I am
embracing the words of others and making them my own in prayer. The words of the Memorare
and the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) come to mind, heart, and lips more readily than they
have in the past.
And music. Texts of scripture, and words of faith, set beautifully and memorably by skilled
colleagues who are composers, seem also to come easily to mind and express the sentiments I
feel called to bring to prayer.
The Spirit does indeed come to the aid of our weakness, pointing us to prayers that others have
prayed in past ages; and attracting us with the beauty of well-crafted melodic prayer text.

will lead you to a song prayer that has been posted on our
parish website since near the beginning of the pandemic. The
text is provided below to help you to meditate on it.
You are All We Have
You are all we have. You give us what we need.
Our lives are in your hands, O Lord, our lives are in your hands.
1. Protect me, Lord; I come to you for safety. I say, 'You are my God.'
All good things, Lord, all good things that I have come from you,
the God of my salvation.
2. How wonderful are your gifts to me, how good they are!
I praise the Lord who guides me and teaches me the way of truth and life.
3. You are near, the God I seek. Nothing can take me from your side.
All my days I rest secure; you will show me the path that leads to life.

Hermanos y hermanas:
El Espíritu viene en ayuda de nuestra debilidad;
he tendido a favorecer la oración meditativa y espontánea.

WEEK AT A GLANCE
USCCB Priority Resources as
Regards to COVID-19 Through the good leadership of our shepherds, the Church is experiencing the remarkable grace of spiritual closeness from a distance. To the extent you may find it helpful, the Conference has been collecting examples of how our community of faith has sought to remain with one another in prayer during these difficult times. You may find the list here: http://www.usccb.org/coronavirus In the days ahead, we will update this page as we find and you share additional resources. USCCB Public Affairs and Episcopal Resources teams are partnering also with the Office of Divine Worship, the Office of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, and other Conference colleagues to develop new resources to help the faithful in our home prayer. These are being prepared for Catholic Current. Those resources are here: https://catholiccurrent.org/covid19/
