In February, a 13-member delegation from the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce traveled to Albany to attend the 45th Legislative Caucus of the New York State Association

of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators (NYSABPRL). This was the fourth annual delegation trip to this event for the Chamber.

The delegation included Melissa Chapman, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, and Veronica Harris, Director of Community Affairs, at the Brooklyn Chamber; Renee V. McClure, Manager of Community and Customer Manage-ment at National Grid, and Juliet Lewis, Manager of Public Affairs at Con Edison, Co-Chairs of the Chamber’s Minority

and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Committee; Penda Aiken, Co-Chair of the Chamber’s Workforce Development Committee, and Damaris Ally, both representing Penda Ai-ken Inc.; Clayton Smith, AVP for Non-Profit/CRE Lend-ing, and Niles D. Stewart, First Vice President/Manager of Commercial Lending, from Carver Bank; Shaneek Smith and Jeffrey Denman from Yoswein New York; Nicole Robinson-Etienne, Assistant Director for Government and Commu-nity Affairs at the Wildlife Conservation Society New York Aquarium; Roger Erskine; and Sheldon Mills.

The theme for this year’s three-day caucus was “Restoring Faith & Justice: In Pursuit of Empowering our Communi-

ties.” To this end, a number of educational events and fund-raisers were held to drive home this message. In addition, the Brooklyn Chamber co-hosted “The Annual Small Business Networking Reception” with the Caribbean American Cham-ber of Commerce & Industry and attended a brunch hosted by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo at the Executive Mansion honoring U.S. Congress Member Charles B. Rangel. The ac-tivities concluded with a scholarship dinner, during which the keynote address was delivered by veteran Democratic po-litical strategist Donna Brazile. The Brooklyn Chamber Del-egation Members were guests of NYSABPRL Chair Assembly Member N. Nick Perry.

On February 25th, the Brooklyn Cham-ber celebrated Black History Month by honoring four distinguished individu-

als who have contributed to the borough’s business community: Government Awardee, NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Gregg Bishop; Community Awardee, Tia Powell Harris, Executive Direc-tor/President of Weeksville Heritage Center; Small Business Awardee, Fred Powell, CEO of BF Powell Enterprises; and MWBE Awardee, Nandanie Appana, Founder & CEO of All Eyes On You Corporation.

The event was held at the historic Weeks-ville Heritage Center in Crown Heights.

“Brooklyn has experienced unparalleled success, and this would not have been pos-sible without the tremendous contributions from our Black American community,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “It’s a true honor to acknowledge four astounding business leaders whose ef-forts not only help to maintain a flourishing business environment, but also serve as in-spirations for our MWBE workforce. I would like to thank Con Edison, National Grid and Weeksville Heritage Center for supporting our event and helping to celebrate cultural diversity in Brooklyn!”

“The Brooklyn Chamber is proud to hon-or the Black American community of Brook-lyn with our annual Black History Month celebration,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “During this terrific event – celebrated at the historic site of one of America’s first black communities dur-ing the 19th century, Weeksville Heritage – we not only honored the achievements of the Black community, but we also reflected on the growth of our borough’s diversified workplace. I applaud our four awardees for their meaningful contributions to Brooklyn, and I look forward to seeing the great work they do in the year ahead.”

“I am honored to be recognized by the Brooklyn Chamber as part of their 2016 Black History Month Celebration alongside key business leaders in this borough,” said Com-missioner Gregg Bishop. “Having grown up in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood, I am deeply indebted to the forefathers and mothers in my community, this city, and our nation who have helped secure the op-portunities and equality we all have access to today. I look forward to continuing to work with Brooklyn community leaders and every-day heroes as we write New York City’s next

“Part of making good decisions in business is rec-ognizing the poor decisions you’ve made and why they were poor. I’ve made lots of mistakes. I’m go-ing to make more. It’s the name of the game. You don’t want to expect perfection in yourself. You

want to strive to do your best. It’s too demanding to expect perfection in yourself.”

Brooklyn Chamber Members the Boy Scouts of America organized yet an-other stellar partnership workshop, this

time with fellow Chamber Members Kings Theatre.

The immersive Theater Merit Badge Workshop was held on February 16th, and Scouts learned about lighting, stage direc-tion, acting and costume design from Kings Theatre Director of Production Steve Ehren-berg and theater professional Rob Stevenson. Scouts also received an all-access tour of this majestic Brooklyn treasure, which recently underwent a $92 million restoration.

Brooklyn Scouting Director Justin Rod-strom said, “We are thankful to the folks

at Kings Theatre for helping us inspire our Scouts to learn about the arts, and consider all the artistic opportunities that surround them in this great borough of Brooklyn. We also thank the Chamber for helping us make this and so many vital connections in the Brooklyn business community.”

“It was a great pleasure for me personally and for the Kings Theatre to be able to par-ticipate in the Scouts Theatre Merit Badge program,” said Ehrenberg. “The Kings is continually looking for opportunities to ad-vance our community ties and expand our community activities.”

U .S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand an-nounced on March 8th that B&B Car-ousell was officially added to the Na-

tional Register of Historic Places. The B&B Carousell has a history spanning over 110 years, spending 84 years on Coney Island in New York City. The official designation ex-pands opportunities for federal historic tax credits and other resources to support future preservation and development initiatives.

“B&B Carousell has proven to be a staple of Coney Island since the 1930’s and shaped much of the history of the amusement park,” said Senator Gillibrand. “I pushed for this designation because B&B Carousell has stood the test of time and deserves the distinction of being listed on the register. This designation is another national highlight of New York’s rich history; and will help ensure that B&B Carousell remains a treasured site for future generations to enjoy and experience.”

“For more than 80 years, the B&B Carou-

sell has provided unbridled joy to millions of families across New York City. It’s an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the effort to en-sure its role is commemorated in the Register of Historic Places. Senator Gillibrand and all involved in this effort should be commended for their commitment to getting this done,” said Representative Hakeem Jeffries.

“Coney Island is ‘The People’s Playground,’ and it earned that nickname due in large part to the B&B Carousell. Countless New York-ers have visited and been thrilled by the B&B Carousell for over 80 years, and I am so glad that it is rightfully receiving this historic des-ignation. Thank you to Senator Kirsten Gilli-brand for her efforts, and congratulations to every fan of the carousel – this is a win for Coney Island, Brooklyn and all of New York City,” said Carlo A. Scissura, President and CEO, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

In January, Gillibrand wrote to the Nation-al Register of Historic Places explaining that

although the current location is new, the cur-rent site at the old Steeplechase Park grounds is still historically symbolic and appropriate. Steeplechase Park, being the first and longest lasting amusement park on Coney Island, currently houses the last operating carousel on Coney Island today.

Constructed in 1906, the carousel has had multiple locations since its construc-tion. Upon its completion, the carousel was first located in New Jersey until moving to

Coney Island in 1932. It remained at the site

until 2005, when it was acquired by the City

of New York. After being temporarily stored

in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the carousel

was shipped to Marion, Ohio, for restoration

in 2008 and reopened to the public in 2013.

The carousel is now part of the new Steeple-

chase Plaza, which occupies the site of the

historic Steeplechase Amusement Park which

had operated from 1897 to 1964.

BKLYN DESIGNS Showcases Brooklyn’s Finest Designers, Makers and Brands

During NYCxDESIGNW ith a little under a month and a

half until showtime, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has solidi-

fied key exhibitors and brands participating in the borough’s signature exhibition of de-sign and creativity. After a wildly successful relaunch last year, BKLYN DESIGNS — the internationally renowned, juried exhibition of contemporary furniture, lighting, accesso-ries, and art from Brooklyn — will take place May 6-8, 2016 at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint in conjunction with NYCxDE-SIGN, New York’s citywide celebration of design.

The show will feature emerging designers and established brands hailing from design and manufacturing hubs across Brooklyn, in-cluding Greenpoint, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bushwick, Red Hook, Dumbo, and more. Show producers have also tapped industry leaders and thinkers to help develop a robust program of panel discussions, workshops and interactive installations to celebrate and ex-plore design collaboration in all forms.

Several designers will launch their brands at BKLYN DESIGNS, including Cam Crock-ford Design, Calator Design, earthly and POPA, while established design veterans such as Mark Jupiter — a fourth generation NYC furniture designer and builder — and multi-disciplinary design studio Think Fab-

ricate will showcase new, beautifully detailed furnishings. Additional exhibition highlights include: handmade, ethically sourced home accessories from Bole Road Textiles; modern heirloom furniture from Evan Z. Crane; artis-tic fabrics from De Islas; colorful Memphis-inspired furniture and accessories from Pezzi;

sculptural planters from Come Out to the Coast; lighting fixtures customized by Brook-lyn artists from Legion Lighting and Smash Industries; Edison-style LED lightbulbs and new chandeliers from Urban Chandy; an exhibit of a modular, post-disaster housing prototype designed by Garrison Architects; a Pratt exhibition of student and alumni work; and ethical and sustainable fashion, accesso-ries and home goods from BF+DA Venture Fellows.

“Brooklyn is a hotbed of creative and ar-tistic talent, which is evident in BKLYN DE-SIGNS’ amazing lineup of exhibitors, part-ners and sponsors,” states Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “From hi-tech to handcrafted, we are excited to showcase the latest products and techniques developed in Brooklyn during the borough’s premier design show and one of the anchor fairs of NYCxDESIGN.”

Another exciting highlight of BKLYN DE-SIGNS will be the return of BKLYN BUYS — a curated marketplace where attendees can

The building was renamed after legendary socialite, party host, and matchmaker Weylin B. Seymour — a fictional character inspired by the bank’s ubiquitous “WSB” monograms — and was reopened to the public as a luxurious events venue in 2014. The former bank now hosts film and fashion shoots, music perfor-mances, private parties, weddings, and non-profit and corporate events.

ceiling. An expansive ballroom and opera house make up the hall’s major draw.

From the time of its inception, politicians, performers, and distinguished guests made use of the venue. During Prohibition, Al Capone frequented the hall’s speakeasy. Lena Horne sang there as a teenager.

In 1981, Alice and Michael Halkias bought the Grand Prospect Hall, which currently hosts weddings, private parties, and film and fashion shoots. Portions of The Cotton Club and Prizzi’s Honor were filmed there. In 2015, the owners also reopened the hall’s original Venetian gar-den to the public, now known as the Brooklyn Bavarian Biergarten.

Today, Kings Theatre looks much as it did when it originally opened – with massive chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, ornamental plaster, and vintage carpet – while being able to offer new state-of-the-art staging, lighting, and sound systems.

Fillmore Real Estate was founded in 1966 by Bill Reinhardt, Sr. on the corners of Fillmore Avenue and Flatbush

Avenue in Marine Park. Over the course of the com-pany’s history, it expanded to over 15 offices covering all of Brooklyn, with locations in Canarsie, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Williams-burg, Old Mill Basin, Marine Park, Boerum Hill, and Fort Greene.

“It’s an honor to be part of a company that has lasted so long and continues to thrive,” says John Reinhardt, Fillmore’s current Presi-dent and CEO. “We’re proud to be able to still stand by the values the company was built upon when my father started it with one small office 50 years ago.” Throughout the company’s his-tory, it has seen its fair share of change in the

Borough. “There was a time when you had to think twice about walking into a neighborhood

like Park Slope,” said Ken MacBride, Senior Vice President and Director of REO Marketing, who has been with the company for 30 years. “Now it’s a

coveted family-oriented neighborhood where properties sell for millions of dollars.”

Many distinguished guests attended Filmore’s anniversary celebration. Among those are other independent brokerages from the region like Davis R. Chant Realtors of Pennsylvania and Jordan Baris, Inc of New Jersey. Other distin-guished attendees include New York State Sena-tor Marty Golden, New York City Councilman Alan Maisel, and former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

chapter of black history.” “In saluting me, the Brooklyn Chamber of

Commerce is actually saluting a host of pas-sionate individuals whose dedication to what Weeksville represents – self-determination, self-sustainability, entrepreneurship, activ-ism and equity – has endured over the years, allowing us to arrive at this most auspicious time,” said Tia Powell Harris.

“Small businesses are the bedrock from which strong, engaging and desirable com-munities grow,” said Fred Powell. “Building rapport with our patrons, providing excep-tional service and being connected to the community’s development is essential to re-main relevant in an increasingly more com-petitive marketplace. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has been a consistent resource for small businesses to tap into in order to passionately serve our communities with ex-cellence.”

Nandanie Appana said, “As a proud mem-ber of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its MWBW Committee, I am honored to receive this award and being a part of the 2016 Black History Month Celebration!”

The event was sponsored by Con Edison and National Grid.

“Congratulations to the Brooklyn Cham-ber of Commerce’s Black History Month honorees,” said Juliet Lewis, Manager of Public Affairs at Con Edison. “Con Edison is very pleased to participate in supporting the MWBE committee and its initiatives.”

“National Grid recognizes the importance of partnering with organizations to build strong relationships in the communities we serve,” said Renee V. McClure, Manager of Community and Customer Management at National Grid. “I am pleased to serve as co-chair of the Brooklyn Chamber MWBE com-mittee which fosters supplier diversity initia-tives.”

Furthermore, the Chamber had the dis-tinct honor of receiving special recognition from the balcony of the Assembly Chamber in the State Capitol.

In addition to the legislative meetings, the Chamber hosted a lunch reception with Dr. Kathleen M. Cashin, Member of the Board of Regents representing the Borough of Brook-lyn on March 14th, and a breakfast reception with Daily News Albany Bureau Chief Ken Lovett on March 15th.

Saluting Brooklyn – The Borough of Makers

The most anticipated portion of the trip was the “Brooklyn Night” reception held at the Egg Convention Center, which show-cased over 50 local food manufacturers and attracted more than 600 attendees, includ-ing many members of the NYS Legislature and senior staffers. This event highlighted the critically important economic gains being made across Brooklyn in areas as diverse as food manufacturing, furniture design, soft-ware development and a wide array of inno-vation economy sectors.

Keeping Brooklyn healthy is our mission. That’s why The Brooklyn Hospital Center has teamed up with community health care providers, physicians, civic leaders and legislators to design a dynamic new system that will transform healthcare for more than a million residents of northern and central Brooklyn.

More access to care. Fewer hospitalizations. We are working to strengthen existing physician networks and nurture new ones to improve access to healthcare. Our outpatient services will be expanded, reducing the use of emergency departments while providing better care to our patients and their families. And, Brooklyn residents

will experience better access to high quality inpatient care with improved facilities, new equipment and technology upgrades.

Keeping Brooklyn healthier. To help patients further improve their health and avoid the need for treatment, we’ll also broaden our education, outreach and prevention programs.

Stay tuned for more exciting details as we move toward realizing our vision of creating a higher quality, more efficient healthcare system for everyone in our Brooklyn community. For more information, visit: tbh.org/community update
