Morning Lectures:Choose one, 10 am-noon

Laury A. Egan is the author of The Outcast Oracle, listed as a "Best Book of 2013" by Kirkus Review; Fog and

Other Stories, Jenny Kidd, a psychological suspense novel, and three poetry collections: Snow, Shadow, a Stranger, Beneath the Lion's

Paw and The Sea & Beyond.

Sec 2: Journalism Journalism today takes many forms, from citizen journalism and blogs to traditional media. Community members can get involved on a hobby level, seek paying jobs, or learn how to report on events and issues happening in their community or club.

Debbie Mura has spent more than 35 years covering all segments of the news for daily newspapers around the state. She will talk about how journalists work and opportunities for newcomers to become involved. Debbie will draw on her experience both in the field and as an assistant professor of journalism at Brookdale.

Sec 3: Your Heart's Desire What makes us write? Explore your heart's desire as a source of creative energy. How do we use desire to fuel creative writing endeavors? Examine visions from your deepest longings as windows to creativity while rediscovering what drives you as a writer.

Marc David Bonagura is an associate professor of English at Brookdale and a Teaching Artist at Monmouth County Arts High. He holds an MFA from the University of Georgia.

Sec 4: Blurring The Line Between Poetry And Prose: Telling Your Whole StorySometimes a poem cannot tell your whole story. Have you wrestled with the desire to write both poems and memoir? Is there a way to combine the lyric moment with the larger narrative? Would you like to push against the conventions of form and create a combination of poetry and prose? We will examine writers who have done this effectively, how they did it, and then work with your material to discover ways to create a spacious structure that can hold your whole story.

Nancy Bryan is an adjunct instructor in the English department at Brookdale. She organized the first Narrative Medicine Conference at Brookdale. Nancy holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is currently working on her first book of poetry, Black Sheep.

Afternoon Plenary Session:All attend: 1-2:30 pm

Join best-selling author HELENE STAPINSKI as she discusses what makes a riveting memoir. Learn the tools, strategies and approach that will help your prose sing and make it attractive to publishers. Also learn how to go about pitching an agent and landing a publishing house.

Stapinski is the author of the national best seller, Five-Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History, which chronicles growing up in Jersey City amongst a family of crooks. (Five-Finger is currently being made into a documentary). Her second book, Baby Plays Around: A Love Affair with Music, traces her years spent as a rock drummer on the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 90s alternative scene. Her writing regularly appears in the New York Times and has been published in dozens of newspapers, magazines and web sites, including Travel & Leisure, New York Magazine, Salon, Columbia Journalism Review, Real Simple and Food & Wine.
