Message from Fr. Pergjini- It was October 13, 1917 that made Fatima, Portugal known to all the world that Our Blessed Mother promised to the three children that she would give the sign on that specific day at noon time to confirm everything she had said. The morning of that day it was a heavy rain and thousands of people patiently and anxiously were awaiting to see the sign. It was at noon that the sun broke through the clouds and started to dance in the sky as thousands of people witnessed the miracle of the sun. As I share with you this significant moment in the world history, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima, I do bring to my mind the beautiful memories that I have visiting Fatima. My first time visiting Fatima was many years ago as a seminarian thanks to the generosity of some benefactors who sponsored every year seminarians in the United States to visit Fatima. They were remarkable Catholics with a deep devotion and love to our Lady Fatima that touched my soul. They shared with us, as we did with them, our faith journey and the powerful presence of Our Lady of Fatima in our life. They all have a story to tell. One of them, Margaret, who sponsored me few times to go to Fatima had an amazing conversion story to our Catholic faith. She and her husband Victor were Methodists. A few weeks before the death of Victor, who was in hospital, a Catholic priest passed by his room. She saw him passing by but they did not pay any attention. Victor asked his wife who was the man who just walked by. She told him that was a Catholic priest. To her surprise he asked her to invite him into his room. She was shocked to hear that and simply said to him: "why?" He did not give any reason but insisted that he wanted to see the priest. Margaret went after the priest who was still visiting the Catholic patients in that floor. As soon as the priest walked into his room his face changed. He never had any interest in the Catholic Church and he never met any Catholic priest before. The priest who was very kind and aware that Victor was not Catholic tried to helped him to ease his physical and spiritual pain. The priest visited Victor every day. Victor told his wife that he wanted to die as a Catholic. He received the sacrament of confession, confirmation and Holy Communion one week before his death. Margaret described his death as a very peaceful and beautiful moment for both of them After Victor’s death, she could not understand the decision of her husband. For a few years she was struggling to make sense of what Victor experienced. One day one of her friends, also a convert to Catholicism, invited her to go to Fatima. In the beginning she hesitated to go to a place unknown to her and also she did not believe in the presence of our Lady. Finally she changed her mind and went to Fatima. That trip became the journey of a deep and profound experience of conversion. She used to tell us that Victor, who was not physically present any more, but she deeply felt his spiritual presence helped her to enter into a new relationship of faith, a journey of conversion eased by the presence of Our Lady of Fatima. As she beautifully described, Fatima was the place where she was touched by Our Lady and also the desire to become Catholic. She became Catholic on Ascension Thursday as she used to remember with great joy the day she entered into the Catholic Church. Yes indeed, Fatima is a place of great interior and spiritual peace that has consoled many souls toward the journey of conversion, my soul too. As I bring to my mind my many trips to Fatima, private retreats at the monastery of the Pius X, the Irish Dominican nuns, celebrating Holy Mass at the Capelina where Our Blessed Mother appeared to the three children, and the moving stories of conversion, I firmly believe the need to speak and remind ourselves about the message Our Lady of Fatima told to the three saintly children. Repentance and conversion, were the words that our Blessed Mother frequently mentioned to them. Also, the vision of Hell is well known in the history of Fatima. It was a tormenting scene for the three little children. They saw the agony beyond description of tormented souls in hell. It was immediately after this vision of hell that Our Lady asked for the spreading of devotion to her immaculate Heart of Mary. Today not many speak about tormenting souls in hell, a total absence of Christ's love, but none of us can remove the many passages in the Gospels that Christ speaks about hell. This Sunday, October 15, again we cannot ignore the words of Christ in the Gospel of Saint Mathew 22: 1-14:

“Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Many are invited but few are chosen.”

We all hope to listen to the voice of Christ through Mary and be with those who are chosen in the light and glory of Christ. We all know where Christ is present: in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Holy Scripture, in all Tabernacles of our Catholic Churches around the world, and in the sacraments. We as Catholics, on our knees, beg the intercessions of Our Lady Fatima to present all of us to Our Divine Savior with humble and contrite hearts. At this important anniversary of Fatima, October 13, the miracle of the sun, may we be aware of the words of our Blessed Mother to repent and enter humbly and peacefully into the path of conversion. May those whom I knew in Fatima and helped my priestly journey rest in peace and may Almighty Father rewards them for their generosity! Our Lady of Fatima pray for us! Amen!

Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. It is organized by the Propagation of the Faith and is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. World Mission Sunday will be celebrated next Sunday, October 22nd. As described by Pope Saint John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81). Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to “Chat With The Pope” to learn more about his missions. Scan this year’s World Mission Sunday poster using Facebook Messenger for your mobile device, or learn more at ChatWithThePope.org

In anticipation of World Mission Sunday next week, let us offer a World Mission Rosary asking

Jesus to care for missionaries and those they serve and to help us express our faith in all we do.

Our Lady of the Rosary, Pray for us.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS ST. MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE

(1647-1690) St. Margaret Mary died in the convent of the Visitation nuns at Paray-le-Monial in France on October 17, 1690 and was canonized in 1920. Born into a middle class family in Burgundy, France, her father died when she was 9 years old and she was badly treated in the family of an uncle who took her in. At the age of 24 she entered the monastery of the Visitation nuns at Paray-le-Monial. There she suffered greatly because of health problems but she was encouraged by the Lord to make profession (1672). The following year, on the feast of St. John the Evangelist, the Lord asked her to receive Communion on the first Friday of each month and to make reparation for the sins committed against him. In June of 1675 Jesus asked that the first Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi be dedicated to his Sacred Heart, together with reception of Communion and acts of reparation. When her superiors were unwilling to cooperate, Margaret Mary received support and guidance from the Jesuit, Claude de la Colombiere. Nevertheless she still had to suffer more when the Lord instructed her to

go contrary to her own Visitation community. Finally, however, a friend of hers became superior (1640) and selected Sister Margaret Mary as an assistant and as mistress of novices. Thus, on June 21, 1686, the feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated in the convent for the first time. The image of the Sacred Heart was painted on the standard of Louis XIV and was later adopted in France, Spain and the Tyrol. In 1873 France was consecrated to the Sacred Heart and the Basilica of Sacre Coeur was built in the Montmartre district of Paris. Later, Spain and Brazil also erected statues in honor of the Sacred Heart. In 1856 Pope Pius IX extended the feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church and in 1929 Pope Pius XI raised the feast to a solemnity.

Lord, pour out on us the riches of the Spirit which you bestowed on St. Margaret Mary. May we come to know the love of Christ, which surpasses all human understanding, and be filled with the fullness of God.
