The Evans were long-time members of the Bronte United Methodist Church. The Scholarship is for students 19 years of age and older. Applications are available from Pat Martindale at the City Hall in Bronte, 114 South Washington. Applications must be returned to the City Hall by September 16, 2013. Basquez receives degree John Basquez of Bronte was awarded his Bachelor of Business Administration degree during summer commencement at Angelo State University August 9, 2013, in San Angelo. Bronte Golf Tourney slated The Bronte Longhorn Golf Club is sponsoring a 3 person 27 hole golf tournament on Saturday, September 21. Tee time is 9 am. Benefit lunch set for September 8 A Hamburger Lunch, benefitting Janel Vaughn, will be held Sunday, September 8, from 11 am to 2 pm in the parking lot of First National Bank of Sterling City in Bronte. The funds will be used to help defray medical expenses. She recently returned from MD Anderson. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program announced The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to recog- nize students in grades 5 – 12 who have demonstrated exemplary community service. These prestigious awards sponsored by Prudential Financial Network in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), are presented annually on the local, state and national level. Students who are eligible to apply should currently be enrolled in grades 5-12 and be legal residents of the United States. Students should have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least in part after September 1, 2012. Applications are available online at www.principals.org/spirit. Click the “Apply Now” link. Applications may also be mailed to inter- ested applicants by calling (877) 525-8491. Students may turn their applications into their school counselor by November 5, 2013. ACT and SAT Test Deadlines announced Students interested in taking the October 26, 2013, ACT test must regis- ter by September 27, 2013, in order to avoid late fees. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org or pick up an application in the high school coun- selor’s office. If someone is unsure which test to sign up for, please consult the high school counselor. Students interested in taking the October 5, 2013, SAT Reasoning Test must register before September 6 in order to avoid late fees. Another SAT Test will be adminis- tered November 2 and the deadline to apply for that test is October 3. Registration may be done online at www.collegeboard.com or you may pick up a regis- tration packet in the coun- selor’s office. Fee waivers are available to junior and senior stu- dents who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Call or see Mrs. Timmerman, counselor for more infor- mation. Please keep in mind that the ACT and SAT tests will be offered several times throughout the spring semester. The ACT test is offered at Bronte High School in October, April and June. Free study guides are available in the coun- selor’s office. The high school library has practice test preparation books available to students. The ACT and SAT websites also have free practice items available online. For more information, please call the BHS coun- selor’s office at 473-2511. Account established for Vaughn An account has been set up at First National Bank of Sterling City in Bronte for Janel Vaughn to help defray medical expenses. A trip to MD Anderson in Houston is scheduled. Commissioners Court minutes posted The Coke County Commissioners Court met in regular session August 12, 2013, at the courthouse in Robert Lee. Members of the court present included Judge Roy Blair, Commissioner, Pct. #1 Gene Montgomery, Commissioner, Pct. #2 Wendell Lee, Commissioner, Pct. #4 Bobby Blaylock. Deputy Clerk Martha Ratliff was also in attendance. The meeting opened with the pledge to the flag and prayer was offered by Commissioner Pitcock. Judge Blair announced the presence of a quorum. Commissioner Lee made a motion to approve the minutes for July 22nd. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Blaylock. Motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Treasurer Hal Spain. Commissioner Pitcock made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Montgomery.
