Introduce Brominated Vegetable Oil (Hello all, I am Mario and I am going to present about how the reason why soda is bad for you is literally on the label: BVO) a. (First off) What is BVO? b. (What is its) Function? c. Where it is found? 2. Ok, now we know a bit more but why should I be concerned? In other words: How is this seen as a problem? i. (Well the average amount of) Soft drinks consumed in US ii. Out of all the major sodas sold, 2/3 have BVO 3. Effects of Brominated Vegetable Oil a. (It) Interferes with the endocrine system i. But what is the endocrine system? ii. A system of hormones iii. (bromide) Outcompetes iodide for thyroid iodide receptors 1. It is known that a lack of iodide can cause hypothyroidism 4. where is iodide generally found? /How do humans take in a. But wait? Chemistry? I thought it was bromine that was the problem, not bromide? a. Well bromine can become bromide b. (And there are actually several) Similarities between iodide and bromide 5. In an extreme case of brominism a. Case study (here you have a man that liked soda a bit too much that he went bonkers and had fatigue and lethargy) i. Introduce TSH and its role in the metabolism in keeping a decent rate, and the lack of it will actually slow down the metabolism
