Air duct cleaning is one spring clean-ing job you really can't do yourself. Itpays to involve a professional who willdo the job right the first time, becausedoing the job wrong can actually causeproblems in the system. But before youpick up the phone, make sure youknow what a good cleaning willinvolve so you can be sure the pro youhire does the job well.
The National Air Duct CleanersAssociation, offers a checklist forhomeowners hiring a duct cleaner.Here are some questions to ask a pro-fessional about what the cleaning willencompass. Will he:
* Inspect the system thoroughlybefore he begins work and alert you toany problems? NADCA requires certi-fied members to provide this service tocustomers.* Ensure the HVAC system fully func-
tional before the cleaning begins?* Clean return air and air supply duct-
work?* If interior ductwork is made of
metal, ensure that all surfaces are freeof visible debris? The cleaner shouldinspect ductwork at several randomsites, on both return and supply sidesof the system, to ensure this.
* Check fiberglass or fiber-lined duct-work to ensure it's in good condition,free of tears and abrasions and well-adhered to the interior of the duct?
* Ensure supply registers, return airgrilles and diffusers are visibly cleanwhen the work is done. All should beproperly replaced and reset.
* Check that the supply plenum (adevice directly downstream of the airhandling unit) is free of moisture stainsand contaminants? Is the return airplenum free of visible dust and debris?
* Seal access panels according to theNADCA standard after the air ductcleaning is done?
* Clean the airstream side of the heatexchanger?
