    What are After School Activity Courses?

    Activity courses provide fun, challenge, and excitement for new learning that capitalizes on the different

    intelligences of children. Instructors may be teachers or community members who are certified to teach.

    All courses are held at Mount Prospect School from 3:15-4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.

    How to Register

    OPTION 1: We recommend you register and pay for courses online. Go to www.bernardsboe.comand click on the Payments tab at the top of the screen. Then click on the here hyperlink and

    under Select a Payment choose Mini Units MP. Complete the form by following the prompts anfilling in all fields. You need to complete this process for each registered course. Please note: Theis a $2 convenience fee for each online course registration.

    OPTION 2: A separate registration form has been provided for each day. Complete a separate fofor each course your child wishes to participate in. Please send your registration forms and check

    in an envelope marked After School Activities to your childs teacher.

    The alternative course selection is used in the event your childs first course will not run or has beenclosed. (Choosing alternatives greatly increases the likelihood of your child participating in theprogram.)

    In order for a course to be held, a required minimum must be met. This varies per course, butgenerally 12 students per course are required. Some courses are limited to a maximum number ostudents, and that will be noted in the course description. We strive to maintain a ratio of 12 to 15students per teacher.

    In order to accommodate all students, additional sections may be added based upon registrationresponse. If this occurs, students are not the guaranteed instructor(s) listed in brochure, but the claday & content will remain the same.

    Course Placement Decisions: Courses are filled in the order the registration forms are received,either online or via hard copy. Once a course is full (number depends upon the course and the

    number of instructors), every effort will be made to place the student in his/her second alternativecourse selection. Please note that online payment does not guarantee enrollment.

    Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. So please send in your registration right away. Registration ends on Friday, February 22. Late registration ends on Thursday, February 27. No registrations will be accepted after February 27. Confirmations will be sent home via e-mail or your childs backpack by Friday, Friday 28, 2013.

    Please do not call the office for Activity Program confirmations.

    Courses begin Monday, March 4, 2013.

    Payment

    Tuition is $90 per student for most courses. Late registration fee: Any registration sent-in February 23 to February 27 will be charged a $15.00

    late fee. Checks sent in late should be made out for $105.00.

    Checks should be made payable to the Bernards Township Board of Education. PLEASE ISSUE A SEPARATE CHECK FOR EACH COURSE IN, WHICH YOUR CHILD WOULD LIKE TO

    ENROLL..

    If you qualify for free or reduced lunch you may also qualify for a scholarship. Please contact KerLinstra at x259 or Corey Richardson at x258 or call the After School Mini-Units Program Line at 204-2550 ext. 306.

    Program Guidelines

    If a student is present at school but will not be attending his/her course that afternoon, YOU MUSTSEND A NOTE/E-MAIL to your childs teacher and/or Ms. Kerry Linstra ([email protected]) Ms. Corey Richardson ([email protected]). This is an important security precaution f

    your childs safety.

    If a student is absent from school during the day, he/she will not be permitted to attend his/hercourse after school that day.

    If inclement weather occurs, call the school office to find out if after school courses are canceledCanceled classes will be made up the week after the last scheduled class.

    It is presumed that all students will behave in an appropriate manner. School rules of conduct appto the After School Activities Program. A student who violates the rules may be removed from the

    program. Please discuss this with your child.

    Please remind your child on the day that he or she has course(s) to attend. No refunds will be givefor missed classes.

    If children are walkers/bike riders at dismissal time, an adult must accompany them home.Exceptions will be made only with written consent by the parent/guardian.

    Children must be picked up promptly by 4:30pm. If late pickups occur more than twice, the studewill not be allowed to continue in the program. No refund will be given for missed classes.

    Some courses have irregular schedules due to holidays and parent-teacher conferences. Pleasecheck the meeting dates for each class.

    Students are encouraged to bring their own snack with them for their after school course. Please be aware that during the After School Activities Program there will be NO NURSE IN THE

    SCHOOL BUILDING.

    Monday CoursesMonday Meeting dates: March 4, 11, 18, April 1, 8, 15, 29, May 6

    1MT5 - Mock Trial 7:30-8:30 AM, continued courseThis class is a continuation of the first semester course. Students will be creating a script from the trial thatwas written in the fall. The class will culminate in a Mock Trail performance for families and friends. The

    performance will be held in the evening at Mount Prospect and parents will be notified of the presentatdate. Students must have been enrolled in the first course in order to participate in part 2. Notification o

    the performance date will be forthcoming.

    Grade 5 Instructor: Mr. P. Vreeland

    2DS - Digital Storytelling and HyperstudioDigital storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and combines technical tools to weave persontales using images, graphics, music, and sound mixed together with the authors own story voice. In this

    course students will write and utilize various digital tools such as Hyperstudio, Microsoft Word, the Internetand digital camera to create a digital story in the computer lab.

    Grades: 3, 4, 5 Instructor: Ms. K. Pellicone

    3SM - Scrapbooking ManiaCreate a scrapbook of your very own memories! Students will learn how to create perfect pages using

    matting, journaling, and unusual art accents. Bring your favorite photos and leave each class withbeautiful scrapbook pages.

    Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Instructor: Ms. S. Jakubowski

    4C - CookingA fun, learning experience where students will cook easy recipes that will include simple meals and

    desserts. Students will cook, eat, and/or take home the finished recipes. Students will vote for the finalrecipe that we will make on the last week.

    5DB - Dream It, Build ItUse multi-media to make the creations of your dreams. Work with Lincoln Logs, KNEX, Lego, make mini-

    paper airplanes, create balloon constructions, make bridges out of straws and popsicle sticks, towers ou

    of paper cups and even build using food. You can make anything you can imagine. Instructions areprovided or you can build free-style. Its your choice!

    Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Instructor: Mrs. D. Reilly, *Ms. K.     6SL - Sign Languagen this mini unit you will learn what (ASL) American Sign Language is. You will learn how to sign the

    alphabet. You will learn how to count, the colors, simple sentences, your name. You will have anopportunity to learn words in sign language that you always wanted to learn. Throughout the mini uniteach student will make a book with all the signs they have learned to take home.

    7GF - Getting Fit with FinanceLearn the basics of finance through games, role playing, and hands on activities. What are income,expense, profit, and taxes? How much did that lemonade stand really make? We will discuss various

    occupations and why their salaries differ, opportunity cost, various methods of payment (cash, credit cadebit card, electronic transfer), scarce resources, wants vs. needs, choices, and other topics.

    Grades: 3, 4, 5 Instructor: Ms. E. Killian

    8RC - Arts and Craftsn this mini unit you will make a variety of arts and crafts. You will use your creativity to sculpt and paint.You will make bracelets, pins, magnets, book bag chains and many more fun projects. You will usedifferent kinds of art materials, such as water colors, tissue paper, paint, markers, color pencils, etc. to

    create different kind of pictures. You do not have to be an artist to join this mini unit. You just need to bready to have fun and to bring a lot of cool art projects home.

    Thursday CoursesThursday Meeting dates: March 7, 14, 21, April 4, 11, 18, May 9, 169BC - Mount Prospect Boot CampLets release all of that extra energy we have built up during the school day in a fun, and healthy way!

    Mount Prospect Boot Camp is a great way to learn all about the importance of exercise and goodnutrition, and most importantly, increase strength and endurance by actively participating in aerobicexercise. Students will be amazed and proud of the goals they achieve ~ and the strong athletes they

    can become! Sneakers and a smile is all you need!

    Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Instructor: Ms. M. Mullin

    10AA - All About ArtStudents will learn a broad spectrum of art topics including Color Theory, Technique, Perspective, andStyles using a variety of Media. We will create a color wheel; draw a seasonal still life using paint, pastel,

    pencil, and charcoal; create a collage, discuss the effects of light and touch upon other topics designeto improve drawing skills while allowing for fun and flexibility. Students will be able to enhance their art bychoosing items from the Creativity Chest.

    11G - MPS Gardeners

    Have you seen Mount Prospects garden outside the library windows? Are you interested in learning allabout planting? Join us for a mini unit on gardening! We will plant cucumbers, lettuce and peppers, to ju

    name a few, and keep them in a grow cart. When it gets warm enough we will transplant these outsidto the garden beds. We will prep the garden, tend to the plants, water and observe, keeping a weekly

    journal. In addition, each week we will focus on a new topic such as observing worms, determining howmuch of the earths land is good for planting, compare and contrast soil samples from around MPS, andexplore pollination. In case of rain or bad weather, bird feeders and garden decorations will be created

    So if you are thinking of completing a mini unit and gardening is your thing, sign up and help us make ougarden grow!

    14BW - The Case of the Big Bad Wolf 7:30-8:30 AM*Dates: March 15, 22, April 5, April 12, 19, May 10, 17,31 ( March 15 start date, and April 5 are differentfrom the other Friday courses)n a criminal trial simulation of The Case of the Big Bad Wolf third graders will learn about rules and law

    within a community. They will learn about the American criminal justice system and trial procedures.Students will role play members of a fictitious community and hold a mock trial on the last day of the min

    unit. Examples of the roles are: bailiff, lawyers, sheriff, witnesses, jurors and news reporters. Every student actively involved in the pretrial lessons and will participate in the trial.

    15CC - Mount Prospect School Chess ClubWhat move will your pawn make? Join the Mount Prospect Chess Club to decide! Beginning students wbe introduced to the basic rules and strategies of chess and develop their problem solving skills.

    ntermediate and advanced players will explore the use of expert strategies. Students will be groupedbased on their level of playing and will have an opportunity to move into a more advanced group if

    necessary. (Please indicate your childs level of playing on this form.) A voluntary chess tournament willculminate this mini-unit.
