physical and intellectual development. • The leading clinical cause of mental retardation in the world, Down
syndrome occurs approximately once in every 600 - 1000 births. It is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status.
• People with Down syndrome benefit from appropriate medical care, early intervention, education and vocational programs.
• There is a wide variation of mental abilities and physical development in individuals with Down Syndrome.
• Most individuals are educable with many being included in public school settings and employed in the community as adults.

• The 2008 Down Syndrome Family Alliance of Greenville Buddy Walk at Furman University is one of 190 Buddy Walks planned in cities across the country this fall. The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome.
