Based in Utah, USA, Coverstar are the key manufacturer of automaticsafety covers today.Their cover system has developed through many yearsof innovative design, precision engineering and quality production.

Mechanical Benefits:The Coverstar system is based on strength. For example, the sliders, which are traditionally the weakest part of a cover system, are more thanfour times as strong as any other slider used in the industry.

Coverstar’s exclusive heavy-duty double row sealed stainless steel ballbearing pulleys have almost triple the load bearing capacity of single rowpulleys used by other companies. In addition, the exclusive rope has abreaking strength of 2,200 psi, twice that of standard Dacron ropes.

No sheer pins or bolts are used in the Coverstar drive train, instead thesystem operates with keyways to provide maximum reliability.Within thedrive train, Coverstar’s exclusive Positive Shift Gear system completelydisengages one gear before shifting to the other.

Unlike other systems, it cannot double engage causing the system to tryto run in both directions at the same time, causing gears to wear andslip. To top it all, the surrounding and connected heavy-duty frameworksand brackets are fully expandable, ensuring the most solid fixing andeliminating bent and/or broken brackets. Once the system is locked intoplace, it cannot move around.

Fabric Benefits:All of the this would be worthless without a good quality fabric to coverthe pool. Rather than use the industry standard vinyl’s, popular with othercover manufacturers, Coverstar supply the far superior Ultragard II vinylcomposite in a range of colours. Ultragard II offers the best solutionavailable to problems posed in safely covering a pool in current harshenvironments.

For those times when we do get sunny periods, you can be assured thatthe high level of UV resistance offered will reduce the level of colourfading considerably as compared to standard vinyl. Under test conditions,Ultragard II has been exposed to the equivalent of approximately fouryears of Florida sun and fading was shown to be negligible. This fabricalso offers high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other poolchemicals.

In addition, Ultragard II is extremely tough. An acrylic coating on theunderside means that the fabric has a high resistance to abrasion, i.e.dragging the cover over a deck surface surrounding a pool is not aproblem. Incorporated within the fabric is a double yarn rip stoptravelling both down and across the material. As well as helping toprevent shrinkage, this weave stops any tears or punctures which shouldoccur from growing larger. All in all, Coverstar Ultragard II is the idealpool cover fabric.

Available in a wide range of colours.

Why Coverstar?

Due to limitations in the printing process the colours abovemay vary slightly and are for guidance only.

Cover SystemsDeck-Mount.This is a fully above ground system. The mechanisms and guides aresecured to the deck surround of thepool. This is the most common formof retrospective fit cover as noalteration is needed to the poolsurround providing it is solid and level. When fitted the roller is visible.Themechanisms at either end of the rollercan be covered with white housings ifrequired (at no extra cost), or you canindependently construct your owndesign of housing such as thosepictured. Along with the following twosystem options and because guidesare secured to the deck, almost anypools shape can be covered.

Recessed Top-Guide.The same guide set up as the deck-mount, but all the mechanisms arerecessed into a pit for a neaterappearance. A pit lid can be supplied ifrequired (again at no extra cost).Thisis an aluminium lid which covers thepit neatly and allows access to theroller and mechanism.Your ownindependent design can be introducedif you wish.

Horizontal Flush-Guide(Deck or Recessed).Flush guides sit in channels recessedalong either side of the pool, leaving aflush finish. Generally the guides sitbehind copings on a rectangular pool, but again, as this is a deck guidesystem almost any pool shape can becovered.

Mechanism and roller can be deckmounted or recessed into a pit. Under-guide.

These systems offer by far the neatestfinish for rectangular pools. The guidescan be suspended under a copingstone (if suitable) - known as standardunder-guide, or can be built into thepool wall while under construction -known as encapsulated under-guide.The track is virtually hidden and thepool is sealed from the pool wall notthe surrounding deck. All mechanismsare recessed into a pit and can becovered with the standard aluminiumlid.

Deck Mounted Systems.• The mechanism and guides need

to be set square to the pool andcreate a pure rectangle.

• The guides must extend past theend of the pool by a minimum of18” to allow a good overlap of the cover.

• The mechanisms/roller should beset back 18” (457mm) from thefront of the pool to limit any coverdrag over the deck.In special cases the roller can beset back further. Please check withyour Coversatr dealer.

• The motor end mechanism willextend 30” (762mm) from theinside of the guide at the motorend. The non-motor endmechanism will extend 10” (???mm)from the inside of the guide at thenon-motor end.

• Top-guides are 2.5” (64mm) wideand 0.5” (13mm) high.

• The leading edge beam will need a

clear space of 6” (152mm) abovedeck level in order to travel thelength of the pool cleanly.

Recessed Top-GuideSystems.As with the Deck Mounted systems but

with the following additional

requirements for the pit.

• On covers up to 45’ (13.5m) a pit12” (300mm) wide x 12” (300mm)deep must be constructed. Forlarger covers please call yourCoverstar dealer for further details.

• The motor end of the pit needs toextend a minimum of 30” (762mm)from the inside of the guide. At thenon-motor end the pit shouldextend at least 10” (254mm) fromthe inside of the guide.

Under-guide Systems.• The pool must be a pure rectangle

with square corners.

• On covers up to 45’ (13.5m) a pit12” (300mm) wide x 12” (300mm)deep must be constructed. Forlarger covers please call your Coverstar dealer for further details.

• The motor end of the pit shouldextend 30” (762mm) from the poolwall. The non-motor end of the pitshould extend 10” (254mm) fromthe pool wall.

• If the guide is to be suspendedfrom a coping cantilever thereshould be a 2” (50mm) flatoverhang and any hollows shouldbe grouted solid for extra strength.

• Encapsulated guides should beinstalled during construction of thepool.

Pit lid trays:Rigid brackets are available upon whichpaving can be directly laid. Alternatively, pit lid trays can be supplied to hold amore decorative and varied finish.

Double coverage:Coverstar systems can cover almostany shaped pool, if not with one cover, then possibly with two! A doublecoverage system uses two covers at aconvenient meeting point. As with theexample shown, this now means thatawkward shaped pools, such as ‘L-shaped’ pools and ‘T-shaped’ pools, canbe covered safely.

Basic operationalinstructionsImportant Safety Issues: Although asafety cover, the Coverstar is only safe when used correctly. Never allowchildren to play with or operate thecover unless closely supervised.Whenever the cover is closed, thecover pump should be in place andset up for use; even a small quantity ofwater gathered on the covers surfacecan be a hazard. Always retract orclose the cover fully, a half open coveris extremely dangerous.

Finally, although the closed cover willtake the weight of many adults, it isnever recommended that anyoneshould play on the cover.

Many queries are raised before and

after the installation of any cover, as

is natural with a large project. Some

of these are addressed in advance

below.

Slack in the covermaterial:All fabric covers, such as theCoverstar, are manufactured with aquantity of slack relevant to the poolsize and style of cover system.Thereare several reasons for this.

1. A cover that is too tight will pullagainst the tracks and will notoperate properly. A cover that ismade too small reduces the life ofthe cover and mechanism, causingpremature failure of both thefabric and the mechanism due tothe added stress.

2. All fabric shrinks over a period oftime. The amount of the shrinkagevaries widely according to the typeof fabric, how the fabric is

manufactured, the temperature ofthe water, and the weatherconditions. Slack is added to thefabric to compensate for fabricshrinkage.

3. The cover must lie on the water inorder to be safe. Most of thesupporting strength of the covercomes from the support of thewater directly under it.

The slack addition calculation isdesigned, from experience, to give thecover and mechanism maximum life, aswell as making the cover look asattractive as possible. Each cover willhave some folds and wrinkles visiblewhen it is closed.

Does the system requiremaintenance?Yes. Basically keep it clean and runningsmoothly. Wash the cover every 6months with a non-detergent soap.Clean all rotating surfaces by sprayingwith water every 6 months, this keeps

them free of dirt and debris whichmay cause clogging.

Clean the guides every 6 months also. With the cover open, spray waterunder pressure directly into the slotthrough which the cover travels, alsospray into the pulley housings at theends of the guides at close range todislodge any debris which may haveaccumulated. Any dirt and grit which is

allowed to build up in the guides willcause abrasion and premature failureof the ropes and webbing, this is notcovered under warranty. After washingthe pulleys clean, spray with a Teflonbased spray to keep them lubricated. Finally, if you have a cover installed in apit, make sure the drainage points arekept clear so the cover andmechanism do not stand in water forlong periods.
