Ever since it was established in 1864,
DNV has been recognised as a leading
classification society for the commer-

tion of mobile offshore units and fixed
offshore installations. Today, more than
220 mobile offshore units and 5,500 shipsare classified by DNV. As the fleet is spread

centres to accommodate the needs of its
customers, with each local office having
special knowledge of the business in the
region, its conditions and governing regu-
lations.
MOVING INTO THE OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKET
For the rapidly expanding offshore wind energy market, DNV is combining its expertise in
certifying onshore wind turbines with best practices and rules for offshore and maritime
classification. New installation vessels that are designed and built in accordance with DNV’s
rules for wind turbine installation units may be given the service notation “Wind Turbine
Installation Unit”, which identifies that the vessel is purpose-built for this industry. By
combining this with other class notations, the vessels may be prepared for various serv-
ices within both the renewable energy and offshore markets.
DNV uses offshore or maritime rules to classify the vessels, depending on the way inwhich the vessels are planned to operate; either by transporting wind power equipment
from land and installing it at the site without support from other vessels or by more
stationary operations at the site with the assistance of additional feeder and/or support
vessels. The planned mode of operation will determine which class rules to use and which
certificates are required by flag states. DNV can draw on its broad experience to help
clarify the needs of each project.
PRE-CLASS SERVICES FOR NEW CONCEPTS:In the current drive to develop offshore wind parks, various vessel designs have been
suggested for the cost-efficient installation of wind turbine equipment. Typical installa-
tion vessels are self-elevating crane units with three, four or six legs and floating mono-
hulls or submersible-type designs.

DNV offers the following early phase consultancy and verification services to the industry:
■ Approval in Principle (AiP):
A review of the design basis and general arrangement drawings covering machinery systems,
safety principles and simplified structural strength calculations with the purpose of evalu-
ating whether the concepts meet the overall safety and structural strength requirements.
The AiP is normally carried out at an early stage in the project development and represents
a first check against DNV Offshore Standards and flag state requirements.
■ Main Scantling Approval (MSA):Approval of main scantling drawings with respect to nominal plate thickness, stiffener
and girder dimensions and grade of material, supported by independent analyses of
global and local strength to verify the designer’s calculations. The completed MSA by
DNV is considered sufficient for ordering most of the steel material for the new build.
■ Approval of Basic Design Package
Approval of the Basic Design Package by combining the MSA and the AiP is considered
a good starting point for the owner and yard to agree on the detailed design and the
new building contract for the vessel.
DNV CLASSIFICATION SERVICES FOR NEW BUILD VESSELS:
DNV’s classification services for Wind Turbine Installation Units take a risk-based approachto defining the right level of review and inspection involvement during the design and
construction phase. The verification work thus focuses on design and production aspects
that are known to be critical to the vessel’s overall safety, thus giving the owner/designer
the maximum benefit of the classification work.

requirements for Wind Turbine Installation
vessels that take into consideration these
vessels’ specific design and operational
aspects, such as:
■ Limited operating conditions to avoid
damage to the equipment during liftingand installation.
■ Limited transportation conditions to avoid
damage to the equipment during trans-
portation to the installation site.
■ Frequent vessel moves and jacking
operations due to continuous repeated
installations.

references are given in DNV-OSS-101 Rules
for the Classification of Offshore Drilling
and Support Units.
