Stabilize and secure your infrastructure

Microsoft® will end support for Windows® Server 2003/R2 on July 14, 2015. This can have a dramatic impact on your business, because without any more updates or patches from Microsoft, your organization’s infrastructure will be less stable and secure.

Here are some of the issues that may arise when Microsoft ends its support of Windows Server 2003/R2:

No complianceAfter support ends, your organization may not meet many industry-wide compliance standards and regulations. As a result, you could lose business or pay high transaction fees and penalties, thereby dramatically increasing the cost of doing business.

No savings The costs of maintaining your legacy servers can add up quickly, and staying put will probably cost more in the end. Maintenance costs for aging hardware are likely to increase, and you will have to deal with added costs for intrusion detection systems, more advanced firewalls, and network segmentation—all simply to isolate your legacy 2003 servers.

No safe havenWithout continued support from Microsoft, your virtualized and physical instances of Windows Server 2003/R2 will not pass a compliance audit. Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 will also be affected.

No updatesMicrosoft will no longer develop or release any updates after ending support. To put this in perspective, consider that 37 critical updates were released in 2013 for Windows Server 2003/R2 under extended support. Imagine the potential impact of zero updates.

Windows Server 2012 opportunities

The most important release of Windows Server in a decade, Windows Server 2012—along with Microsoft System Center 2012—delivers significant new functionality in the areas of virtualization, private cloud, enhanced security, and high availability, plus system and storage management.

This version of Windows Server is packed with many features that can benefit your organization. For one thing, you can choose your own interface. For another, a new Server Manager offers multiserver capabilities, which make it easy to deploy roles and features remotely to physical and virtual servers. Storage Spaces, another new Server 2012 feature, lets you use inexpensive hard drives to create a storage pool, which can then be divided into spaces that are used like physical disks.

Microsoft has also simplified its licensing. To avoid confusion and frustration, Windows Server 2012 is offered in only four editions: Datacenter, Standard, Essentials, and Foundation. The first two are licensed per processor plus a client access license (CAL), and the latter two (for small businesses) are licensed per server with limits on the number of user accounts (15 for Foundation and 25 for Essentials).

Follow a migration process

Your migration should ideally follow a process to make the planning and transition from Windows Server 2003/R2 to Windows 2012 as smooth as possible. That process will include assessing and preparing target workloads and software before you choose the right migration plan.

You’ve probably read about the benefits of moving to a modern standards-based infrastructure, but the “how” may seem daunting. Technical hurdles such as the following can stand between your organization and a seamless, positive, migration experience:
