Latin America nowadays has coun-tries that attract worldwide attention for the progress they have made in the last decade. This region has clustering models worth exhibiting internationally and which can be analyzed together with experts from America, Asia, Eu-rope, Africa and Oceania, to unify cri-teria, publicize new trends, and build towards a better future.

Bringing The 17 th TCI Global Confer-ence to Mexico and Latin America for the first time, provides an opportunity to entrench the concept of clusters and their potential for the countries in the region and to share the models that have worked successfully.

The world is going through an eco-nomic reconfiguration, environmental contingencies and social crises are forcing governments, society, industry, academia, among others, to reflect on the future that is being bequeathed to the next generations.

Creating shared value represents a viable opportunity to ensure long-term sustainability, which can be reached rapidly and leveraged through inno-vative clusters, hence the proposed theme for the 17th TCI Global Confer-

ence 2014 –“Creating Shared Value through Clusters for a Sustainable Fu-ture”.

Through specialized lectures, parallel sessions, panel discussions, work-shops, and papers to be published in the conference, our aim is to advance on a global level towards joint proj-ects, collaboration, and the triple helix model and synergies.

In Monterrey, they are 10 strategic clusters - Aerospace, Agri-Food, Au-tomotive, Biotechnology, Home-Appli-ances, Nanotechnology, Multimedia, Healthcare, Software and ITC, and Sustainable Housing and Renewable Energy which are significant for the development of our city and region.

The State of Nuevo Leon, has defined a strategic policy on clusters. This strategy, focused on achieving eco-nomic development targets productive specialization the improvement in a number of issues related to techno-logical innovation, human capital, at-tracting foreign investment, develop-ing suppliers, sustainability, promotion and internationalization of their com-panies.

In the current international economic climate, Mexico stands out positively due to its expected annual growth of 3.8% in the coming years. This dyna-mism is determined by a combination of healthy public finances, controlled inflation, a significant recovery in em-ployment and an improved business environment.

Since 2000, clusterization has occu-pied a significant place in the national agenda as an economic development strategy, contributing substantially to position Mexico as one of the best places to do business today. Nuevo Leon, the third most important feder-al entity of the country in economic terms, is nationally recognized as a successful model of clustering.

The governor of the state, Mr. Ro-drigo Medina de la Cruz, heads the economic development committee of the National Governors’ Conference, where one objective is to replicate

Nuevo Leon’s model in other regions of the country. This recognition has been achieved, among other things, forhaving nine active cluster initiatives –with clear-cut synergies executed successfully–, and a state board of clusters.

In 2012, Monterrey hosted a fruit-ful and enriching 7th Latin American Congress of Clusters (CLAC). Over 300 participants in this event –coming from different regions of the world, but mainly from Latin America– represent-ed national economic development agencies and regional governments, multilateral organizations, clusters, research institutions and consultants.
