Part 1. The ASTM D7886 Asbestos Exposure Assessment StandardAndrew Oberta, MPH, CIHASTM D7886 Asbestos Exposure Assessments for Repetitive Maintenance and Installation Tasks was published in 2014. More than a description of the OSHA Negative Exposure Assessments with which we have long been familiar, ASTM D7886 offers a methodology to determine asbestos exposure under controlled conditions and to apply the results to work in similar situations. The standard is intended for small tasks which are repetitively performed by tradesmen and technicians whose disturbance of asbestos-containing materials is incidental to, but not the purpose of, their work. These tasks can be simulated in a negative pressure enclosure to obtain air sampling

data, from which statistical tests determine a Confidence Factor relative to the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits or other criteria. The competent person responsible for the work of the tradesmen and technicians -- who are usually not licensed abatement workers -- can then make decisions on respiratory protection and other precautions. The ASTM D7886 approach offers benefits to building owners and other employers of tradesmen and technicians through more cost-effective performance of the work, as well as opportunities for asbestos contractors and consultants to conduct the exposure tests.

Part 2. Exposure Assessment for Repetitive Drilling of Asbestos Cement Siding Utilizing ASTM International’s D7886-14Dave Hogue An exposure assessment was performed to ascertain the levels of airborne fibers and airborne asbestos fibers during repetitive drilling of AC siding taken from a residential structure. The assessment was performed following ASTM International’s Standard D7886-14, Standard Practice for Asbestos Exposure Assessments for Repetitive Maintenance and Installation Tasks. The study was conducted in a constructed 8 foot by 8 foot by 7 foot tall chamber that was maintained under a slight HEPA filtered negative pressure. This presentation will provide detail on the exposure assessment methodology as well as the results of the exposure assessments including the use of statistical confidence limits.

Session 8

HVAC Assessment for the Industrial Hygienist Scott D. Rohlf, CIHThis session will provide an in depth look on the application of industrial hygiene assessment on the form, function, and maintenance of an Heating Ventilate and Air Conditioning system of commercial and residential buildings and their impact on indoor air quality.

Using A Rapid Bacteria Screening Method to Assess Legionella RiskVyt Garnys, Ph.D.Claus JorgensenMorten MillerLisa Rogers This presentation will present a series of international case studies, Danish and Australian, where use of an enzyme based rapid total bacteria method was used for routine monitoring and where, an outbreak was tracked down and quickly mitigated. In these case studies, correlation with Legionella plate counts was used to verify data. Data will be presented to show how rapid screening can be predictive of locations likely to contain legionella, can evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation strategies and significantly advance the response time in situations of outbreak. A description of the technology and the data developed during the USEPA verification will be discussed.

Naturally Occurring Asbestos Panel Discussion Rob DeMaloLynn Woodbury, CDM SmithDr. Dave Berry, EPA Region 8Kevin Braun, CIH Earth Safety DynamicsMark Drozdov, CES

There has been increased interest in determining asbestos content and concentrations in soil, including sources derived from Natural Occurrences of Asbestos (NOA). Traditional sampling and analytical methods commonly used for asbestos in building materials are not appropriate for asbestos in soil. Due to the extremely heterogeneous nature of the soil matrix as well as the various scenarios in

which NOA can be found in a soil sample, specialized analytical methods and training needs to be employed to provide accurate and legally defensible data on these projects. This panel discussion will provide an overview of the issues surrounding NOA in soil, an overview of analytical methods, NOA site mitigation strategies as well as risk assessment approaches used by the US EPA on Asbestos Superfund Soil Projects.

1:30pmSession 10

Current Status of ASTM D2207, Method of Development, and Web-Based Learning Opportunities ProjectFrank Ehrenfeld, III An update of the current state of ASTM D2207 will include roster news, recent leadership changes, status of current standards, as well as the group’s on-going efforts into expanding the pantheon of available analytical and guidance standards. In addition, D22 is evaluating the logistics behind resurrecting training courses, once offered by a team of professionals that travelled throughout the country – now being re-engineered as a possible series of e-learning opportunities.

Session 11

Ins and Outs of Online TrainingBill CavnessThe goal of training in this industry should not be to sell refresher classes; it should be to give the individual the information he needs to comply with federal and local regulations and to protect themselves and others from exposure to asbestos. Online training is a valuable tool to use in the effort to reduce early mortality in the construction industry due to asbestos related disease. If we are aware of that tool and do not use it, we would be responsible to those we are trying to protect. This session will explore online training and provide valuable information for its proper application.

Session 12

Certification: Asset or Liability?Adam Andrews In a clear, engaging presentation, ACAC director of operations Adam Andrews draws on first-hand knowledge of the certifica-tion industry to expose the weaknesses of private industry credentials. Using data from all major environmental certification pro-grams, he explains why smart professionals should think twice before getting “certified.”

Product Testing Finds Asbestos: What Comes Around Goes Around?Sean Fitzgerald, PG Finds of asbestos in consumer products such as crayons, fingerprinting powders, joint compounds, window spackles, and art products have gone in fits and starts from oddball once-in-a-lifetime findings to targeted studies by special interest groups periodically through the last 40+ years of analyzing materials. Unique determinations of asbestos presence have sporadically forged new ground, often catalyzing other studies in a causal chain of testing of consumer products through history. This presentation will illustrate a timeline of such events, to include very recent testing in which new findings mimic the old, both in the vectors by which the asbestos was found, and, ironically, the uniqueness and
